Quick Facts...
  • Slugs can be one of the most damaging pests of vegetable and flower gardens in Colorado.
  • Slugs thrive under high moisture conditions. The most effective way to reduce slug problems is to reduce humidity in a garden.
  • Metaldehyde baits can help control slugs if they are applied correctly and at the proper time.
  • Slugs can be attracted to fermenting materials, such as beer, and trapped.
Slugs are one of the most destructive and difficult pests to control. Seedlings of many vegetables and flowers are favored foods, and high populations of slugs can cause difficulties in establishing a crop. Slugs also feed on many fruits and vegetables prior to harvest. This preharvest feeding results in wounds that allow various fungi and bacteria to enter and spoil the crop. In addition, the slime trails produced by slugs can contaminate garden produce. Slug injury is sometimes difficult to diagnose because slugs hide during the day. Smaller leaves may be eaten entirely, while only the edges of larger leaves may be consumed. Thick leaves often are rasped from the leaf underside. The presence of slime trails often is the best indication of slug activity. Figure 1: Slugs feeding on broccoli.

Might As Well
At this point, you might as well change your bookmarks/links to point to http://www.seaslugteam.com since we probably won't be posting on this one again. It's moderately fugly still, but as Daphne in the Brilliant Blue proves, fugly can still be good! I'm rebuilding the archives still (omg, over 200 posts...), so you may still want to read the archives here until everything is fixed.
As for Blogger , you've served us well, and I still hold a fond place in my heart for you. It's not goodbye, it's more like putting you out to stud ^~ .

Samurai Champloo 01
Alright, I'm taking a deep breath. First things first: everything you have heard about this series being super stylish, and hip like Cowboy Bebop is true. At least in the first episode. The story starts off with Fuu-chan, a waitress at a tea restaurant, getting helped out of a rough situation by a hungry swordsman, Mugen. For only 100 sweet dumplings, Mugen is willing to take on the bodyguards of a magistrate's son and save Fuu. Meanwhile, outside, the magistrate himself is harassing a random townsperson before rounin Jin comes forth and annihilates the magistrate's Yagyuu bodyguards (Jubei is not present). Then, of course, crazy action ensues, and finally ends with Mugen and Jin escaping with the help of Fuu. It seems that Fuu is searching for a samurai that smells like sunflower...

SLUGS
(revised April 2004)
The slug, a close relative of the snail, is an unsightly pest in many gardens and greenhouses. Slugs damage plants with their feeding, often completely destroying seedlings. As they move about, they leave an unsightly slime trail on plants and walks. If crushed on walks and driveways, slugs can present a hazard and often become an unsightly, malodorous mess.
Instead of a shell, slugs have a smooth mantle, which is the raised area above the front part of the body. The slugs common in Delaware may vary in length from 1/4 inch to 3 or more inches. The mouth parts are hard and work like a rasp. Eyes are on tentacles above the mouth parts. All slugs need damp, humid conditions for development. During the day they hide out of sun and wind. They can burrow several inches into the soil under severely dry conditions. During their lifetime they produce fewer than 100 offspring. An individual slug is hermaphroditic (both sexes), but they normally find a mate and cross-fertilize. Most slugs overwinter in the egg stage.
Control
Sanitation improves slug control. Remove all items slugs can to hide under during the day. In fact, use their hiding behavior to your advantage. A simple, effective trap for slugs is a group of boards six inches square or larger, placed around the garden or under greenhouse benches. Check the boards each morning and destroy slugs found there. Another nonchemical control method is to place 4-inch wide strips of fly screen on edge and partially embedded in the soil to keep slugs out of an area.

Cruft-free URLs in Movable Type
How to install Windows XP in five hours or less has the clean, cruft-free URL http://diveintomark.org/archives/2003/08/04/xp
  • First, I got rid of my .html extension. There are a number of ways to do this, but this is what worked for me. I created a new .htaccess file within my archives/ subdirectory and added these 2 lines: DefaultType text/html
DirectoryIndex index index.html This will cause files without file extensions to be served as HTML instead of plaintext.
  • Within the Movable Type web interface, I went to Weblog Config , then Preferences Still within Weblog Config , I went over to Archiving and removed the file extension from the Archive File Template for the Individual Entry Archive. It used to look like this: And I changed it to this:
  • Rebuilt all individual entries. Of course, the rest of the world is still linking to the old archive pages with the .html extension, so I needed a redirect (this also goes in archives/.htaccess

Slug Rings - the best protection from slugs and snails Amazingly effective and easy to use.

Slip a Slug Ring around a plant stem, scrunch it lightly into the soil, and your plant is safe from slug and snail damage.
Here in Monkton Farleigh we invented copper Slug Rings to save our plants from being eaten without harming our ducks, who would happily eat slugs and snails contaminated with slug pellets. Slug Rings have proved to be so effective that we now make tens of thousands and sell them all over the country by mail order. Slugs and snails have taste buds on their feet, and they can't abide the taste of copper, so we make Slug Rings from solid copper to fence off plants from slug and snail attack.
This is an environmentally friendly way to keep slugs and snails off your plants. Since the rings cause no harm, you can have healthy plants and healthy slugs and snails too, encouraging natural garden predators like hedgehogs, slow-worms, frogs and thrushes. No more poisonous pellets, no more free beer for gastropods and no more slug hunting by torchlight!
Slug Rings are guaranteed to last a lifetime. They can be used over and over again for season after season.
