The students' adoption of such a lowly creature for a team mascot was their reaction to the fierce athletic competition fostered at most American universities. UCSC has always offered a wide-ranging physical education and recreation program designed to appeal to the greatest number of students, but it has based its approach on some unusual ideas: that athletics are for all students, not just team members of major sports; that the most important goal of a collegiate physical education department should be to introduce as many students as possible to lifelong physical activities; and that the joy of participating is more important than winning. In 1980, when some campus teams wanted more organized yet still low-keyed participation in extramural competition, UCSC joined Division III of the NCAA in five sports. Since the application required an official team name, UCSC's then chancellor polled the student players, and out of this small group emerged a consensus for a new monikerthe sea lions. It was a choice that the chancellor considered more dignified and suitable to serious play than the Banana Slug. But the new name did not find favor with the majority of students, who continued to root for the Slugs even after a sea lion was painted in the middle of the basketball floor.

Slugs and Their Management
HYG-2010-95
David J. Shetlar Slugs are simply snails (mollusks) without shells. These slimy creatures live in and on the ground and have big appetites for a wide variety of plants found around the home. Young seedling plants are eaten as well as mature plants. They frequently cause damage to glasshouse (greenhouse) and garden plants, and may be especially injurious in mushroom houses. Occasionally, they may congregate in large numbers in basements, on walls, doorways, and along walkways, making these areas unsightly. Slugs may be found when the ground thaws in the spring until it freezes in the fall. Wet conditions are ideal for slug development.
Description of Slugs
Probably the best description of a slug is that it is a snail without a shell. They vary in size depending upon the species and measure from 1/4 to seven inches long. They secrete a characteristic slime (mucus) which they leave behind as they move around. These slime trails are silvery in appearance upon drying and is a common diagnostic character used to identify the presence of slugs. The color of slugs also varies with species, ranging from a dark black-brown to an orange color. When an actual slug is found their soft slimy bodies and extensible eye stalks give the creature its characteristic appearance. The most common slugs found in Ohio landscapes are the gray garden slug, the leopard slug, and the dusky slug. The gray garden slug is the most common and is generally a mottled gray to black in color. It is usually less than one inch long. The leopard slug is the largest, commonly reaching four to five inches in length. It has characteristic black spots on its upper surface. The dusky slug is intermediate in size, being one to three inches long, and can range from a gray to a bright orange in color.

Slugs and snails belong to a class of animals called the Gastropoda. Snails have well developed shells, which are generally spiral in shape. In contrast, slugs do not have a hardened spiral shell (see Figure 1). As a result, slugs can move through relatively small holes and crevices in soil habitats. Figure 1. A Slug The basic morphology of all gastropods include: (1) the head, which includes a mouth, sensory tentacles and simple eyes, (2) the foot, which may be described as a creeping sole, (3) the mantle, which is a fold of skin over the back that forms the respiratory cavity and covers the viscera, and (4) the viscera, which include the internal organs. The skin of slugs regulates body water content and secretes a covering of slime which protects the animal from desiccation. The foot includes a gland that produces mucus on which the animal crawls. As a result, movement of slugs or snails across a plant or substance is marked by a characteristic trail of mucus which is sometimes referred to as a slime trail. In Ohio, slugs found in the field may be native or of European origin. Two species of slugs of European origin that commonly affect field crops are the gray garden slug (also called the gray field slug or nettled slug)

Slugs
In North Carolina many types of ornamental and vegetable plants are damaged by slugs. Slugs are similar to snails but differ from snails in that they do not have a hard protective spiral shell. There are many species of slugs in this state which vary in appearance and habits.
Size
The size varies from less than one-half inch to more than four inches in length and from one-eight to one-half inches in width.
Color
The color varies from ash-gray or yellowish-gray to black. Some are the same basic color throughout the body; others are mottled. Immature slugs resemble adults but are smaller and usually lighter in color.
Eggs
Eggs are gelatinous and watery in appearance. They range in size from 1/8 inch in diameter to almost 1/4 inch and vary in shape from round to oval. In the colder parts of NC, only the eggs overwinter. Eggs are resistant to summer heat, excessive moisture and prolonged drying. They are laid in clusters of about 25 on the soil surface in concealed moist locations.
Life Cycle
In spring eggs hatch and young slugs appear. They resemble adults but may be lighter in color and smaller. Most slugs become mature and lay eggs in the fall of the first year of their life. If not killed by cold weather, they may live for two or more years. Slugs are active at night. Their silver-colored slime trails are quite noticeable each morning.

32. Banana Slug
Banana slugs are the second largest slug in the world, growing up to 25 cm long. Raccoons will eat slugs but roll them in dirt first to bind up the slime.
http://www.naturepark.com/bslug.htm
Banana Slug Ariolimax columbianus Here's a photo peek of this native shell-less mollusk! Banana Slug are Mollusks, which means they are soft-bodied with no visible skeleton. They also belong to the class Gastropoda, which can be recognized by having a muscular foot, a mantle with a cavity, a meaty hump on their back, and a radula (or sand-paper-like grinding mouth parts). They are Pulmonates, which means they have a small lung inside their bodies which opens to the outside with a pneumostone Banana Slugs are the second largest slug in the world, growing up to 25 cm long. They are so named because very often their coloring resembles a banana, bright yellow body with black spots. Solid greenish, pale brown and even almost white specimens can be found locally too. They can change their color slightly over time, becoming more intense or paler as the light, moisture and food allows. These colors help them to camouflage with the leaves on the forest floor. They may be confused with an introduced species, the Black Garden Slug, as it is large and also comes in a brownish color. If you look closely at the Garden Slug, you can usually see an orange-striped edging around the foot and textured furrows on all upper parts of the body except the mantle. The Banana Slug does not have any orange on its body and its body is smooth. The Banana Slug lives in moist forest floors along the Pacific Coast of North America from California to Alaska. It is a decomposer, which means it chews up leaves, and animal droppings and other dead plant material and recycles it into soil. One of their favorite foods seems to be mushrooms. In the process of eating, they also spread seeds and spores.

Snails and Slugs
July 14, 1999
Snails and slugs are destructive pests of landscapes and gardens, feeding on such plants as annuals, perennials, bulbs, ground covers, trees, and shrubs. They can also devour young seedlings overnight. They especially like to feed on the hosta plant.
Snails and slugs are mollusks, related to oysters and clams. Snails transport a protective shell on their backs, basically carrying their homes with them. They are generally brown and from 1 to 1-1/2 inches long. Slugs are referred to as “naked snails” because they have no shell. Gray garden slugs are brownish and from 1-1/2 to 2 inches long, while spotted garden slugs are yellowish with black spots and may be 6 inches long. Both snails and slugs lay clusters of translucent, pearly-shaped eggs under debris or beneath the soil surface. They can lay from 20 to 100 eggs several times per year.
Snails and slugs have chewing mouthparts. They cause plant damage by creating large irregularly shaped holes with tattered edges in plant leaves. They prefer to feed on succulent foliage such as seedlings and herbaceous plants and on fruit that is lying on the ground.
Snails and slugs require moisture to move around, and they secrete a slimy mucus trail, which they use for this purpose. These secretions then dry up into a shiny, noticeable trail. Snails and slugs are active at night when humidity is high from evening rains or irrigation. During the day, they hide under mulch, plant debris, rocks, boards, weeds, and ground covers.

The Northwest is famous for slugs. Our mild, damp climate is ideal for slug development and survival. Most of the time, slugs do beneficial things. They cycle organic matter, contributing to our rich soils, and they are an important food source for other wildlife. When they get into our gardens and landscape plantings, however, they can be quite damaging. Slugs are closely related to snails, and both are related to common shellfish such as clams. They all belong to the animal phylum Mollusca and are termed mollusks. About 40 species of land slugs live in the 48 contiguous states. Roughly half are considered economically important. Of the pest species, all but one were introduced into this country. Introduction from foreign lands was, no doubt, by accident. However, at least one pest, the brown garden snail, was intentionally imported as a potential gourmet food item. About 10 pest slug species now are established in Oregon. Slugs primarily are pests of home gardens, where they find excellent conditions for growth and reproduction. Flowers, herbaceous shrubs, and vegetables are available for food. Areas are kept moist by irrigation through the drier times of the season, and there are many places slugs can hide.

Brown Tree Snakes
Everyone else is telling snake fables; that is mine.
Some people seem to be plagued with snakes, and other people, like us, never see them. Since 1991, we have only seen one in the wild. We have been told that if you have cats, you won't have snakes. We have four cats, but only once did they bring home a snake body. Our neighbor says that the cats don't usually kill the snakes, they just harass them until they decide to go somewhere more peaceful. The Guam Power Authority has blamed snakes for power outages so often that it has become a joke. The snakes, who are arboreal, climb utility poles and fry their buns on the power lines. The GPA guys got so tired of people saying, "Yeah, right" to their snake stories that they started producing snake bodies as evidence. It has been suggested that the snakes are attracted to electromagnetic fields.
Everyone has heard about how the snakes go after babies. People say that they can smell the milk on a young mammal. The bite of the snake can be very dangerous to babies, but we are told by experts that brown tree snakes are not technically venomous. They don't have venom sacs, but simply some weird chemicals in their saliva that can cause a bad reaction in some people. Researchers tell me that the snake is of interest because they think that snake venom in other species evolved this way, from saliva.

Slugs thrive west of the Cascades. Damaged plants are marked by slime trails and irregular-shaped holes with smooth edges. Grass cover, mulches, soil cracks, and worm tunnels provide places for slugs to hide and lay eggs. Remove dark, moist habitats and rototill to a depth of 6 inches to eliminate these hiding places. Slugs lay eggs in the fall after rains start, typically in late September and early October. If you reduce the population before they lay eggs, you have won half the battle.

MT Keywords to WP Slugs
Placed in by Michael at 3:26 pm One of the reasons I had not considered WordPress a viable option for this weblog was that, since September, I have been using keywords to generate entry slugs for all the entries on the site. WordPress did not have the capacity to deal with that until now. In the version I am using, , which will be fully released very soon, each entry has something called a Post Slug. Whatever is entered into that field is used for the entry. The hard part was, how do you transfer something from the MT Keywords field into the WP Post Slug field? The old import-mt script discarded the keywords. The one that comes with 1.2 does have code to generate the slug but does not use the keywords to do it (which actually makes perfect sense since most people don't use them in this manner). After reading Mark's story of how he made the switch, I knew it could be done but not how. Emulating Mark's method of making use of the #wordpress irc channel gave me most of what I needed. I acquired an early copy of the script that Mark used. A little bit of study and you can see the result here. If you would like a copy of your own, you merely need download
