If you've ever read a hardboiled detective story, you may have come across a sentence like, "I jammed the roscoe in his button and said, 'Close your yap, bo, or I squirt metal.'" Something like this isn't too hard to decipher. But what if you encounter, "The flim-flammer jumped in the flivver and faded." "You dumb mug, get your mitts off the marbles before I stuff that mud-pipe down your mushand tell your moll to hand over the mazuma." "The sucker with the schnozzle poured a slug but before he could scram out two shamuses showed him the shiv and said they could send him over."

Snails and slugs are among the most bothersome pests in many garden and landscape situations. The brown garden snail (Helix aspersa) is the most common snail causing problems in California gardens; it was introduced from France during the 1850s for use as food. Several species of slugs are frequently damaging, including the gray garden slug (Agriolimax reticulatus), the banded slug (Limax marginatusi), the tawny slug (Limax flavus), and the greenhouse slug (Milax gagates).

SLUGS
by Ric Bessin, Extension Entomologist University of Kentucky Department of Entomology
R. Bessin, Univ. of Kentucky Slugs are common pests during wet weather and can damage many types of plants in the garden. Slugs are fleshy, slimy animals that feed mainly at night. They prefer cool, moist hiding places during the day. They range in color from light gray to black. Cool, wet spring conditions favor slug problems. Slugs rasp on leaves, stems, flowers and roots. They produce holes in the leaves or just scar the leaf surface. Small seedlings in the garden can be especially vulnerabIe to these creatures. Silvery slime trials are evidence of slug infestations. Here are a few tips on how to prevent or reduce slugs problems:
  • Sanitation. Keep the area free of plant debris (leaves, prunings, pulled weeds, etc.), old boards, stones, or tires that provide cool moist hiding places for slugs.
  • Prune low branches or trees or shrubs which touch the ground. Rake the leaves or mulch in order to allow the ground to dry.
  • Metaldehyde or mesurol bait can be used to kill slugs. Read the label carefully. Do not allow pellets to come in contact with leaves of vegetables.

Ladytron's debut album cut a swathe through the lumbering, bloated chart pap and introspective indie whinging in late 2001 with a new act for a new millennium. The harsh, spoken vocals of Bulgarian vixen Mira Aroyo mirror the emotive lobotomy of Neil Tennant, while sugarspun double Helen Marnie wanders as if trapped within the audio beat-box prison of stylised hand claps, space zaps and synth-jazz - courtesy of Daniel Hunt and Reuben Wu.
Expelled from the foetid collective womb of the UK style magazine whore-mother, hardly had these babes in Electroland begun to reach for the eye kohl before the style vultures descended to preen and flatter; pecking with disdain at all those who might otherwise welcome our new friends. Then consider that none of the four band members originally hail from within even the most extensive vomit splash of our selfish capital.

After seeing this film I'm sure there's very little to surprise me, come on killer slugs? Despite being slow and easily squashed these wee beasties munch their way through numerous bad actors during the film. The cool thing here is Dave Watson's death scene, no matter how ridiculous the premise, when slug parasites eat his head. We even have a generic scientist replete with terrible English accent. These slugs have been mutated by toxic waste you see, and they're eating people at a frightful rate! "Slugs" is pretty hard to swallow folks but makes for some fun dissection.
There are drunk blondes I find unattractive.

Field Guide to the Slug
These creatures are an unavoidable part of the west coast garden scene. Though regarded by some as repulsive, slugs are fascinating. Field Guide to the Slug by David George Gordon (Sasquatch Books) is a 64-page paperback that explores the "secret world of slugs and their kin".
Reading this detailed account of slugdom has caused me to shift my focus on slugs. Now I've learned a few intimate details about slugs, I'm not so quick any longer to terminate their lives. Instead, I gather and deposit the slugs and snails I find in nearby woodland to contine their browsing on the fungi, lichens and algae that are among a slug's favored foods. In the wild, our Northwest native slug species help disperse seeds and spores and break down decaying plant matter.
Field Guide to the Slug abounds in amazing facts about these interesting creatures. Just how slow are they? A banana slug would take nine hours and 15 minutes to finish the 100-yard dash, "assuming it didn't stop for a snack along the way."
A slug's jaw is a solid structure that drops "like a guillotine to latch onto a lichen, leaf, or whatever. The mouth, bearing as many as 27,000 sharp, backward-pointing teeth, rasps at whatever it is feeding upon. Like sharks, slugs routinely lose and replace their teeth.

Snails and slugs prefer decaf
By Bill Davis Special to CNN (CNN) Morning coffee won't pick up a snail's pace. In fact, caffeine may be poisonous to slugs and snails a finding that may lead to the development of more environmentally friendly pesticides, researchers said Wednesday. A study in this week's issue of the journal Nature found that slugs and snails are killed when sprayed with a caffeine solution, and that spraying plants with this solution may prevent the slimy mollusks from eating them. Scientists in Hawaii came upon the results almost by accident. "We were looking for a solution for frogs," said Earl Campbell of the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service in Honolulu. Campbell and colleagues were testing caffeine sprays to control coqui frogs, a problematic invasive species, when they noticed snails and slugs were also affected by caffeine. Researchers found that when they sprayed an area of soil with a 2 percent caffeine solution, slugs and snails would either crawl away from the treated ground or die.
