The Sloth is a slow-moving, nocturnal mammal that spends its entire life hanging upside-down in trees. This arboreal (tree-living) mammal is found in the tropical rain forests of South and Central America. The sloth is nocturnal (most active at night), and it sleeps about 15 hours each day. Anatomy : Sloths have a thick brown (and slightly-greenish) fur coat and are about the size of a cat (roughly 2 feet = 61 cm long). They have a short, flat head, big eyes, a short snout, a short or non-existent tail, long legs, and tiny ears. Many sloths have colonies of green algae encrusting their fur, camouflaging the sloth in its forest environment. Behavior : The sloth is an herbivore (a plant-eater) that eats at night. It eats leaves, tender young shoots, and fruit. Predators : The jaguar and harpy eagle are the main predators of sloths. The sloth's main defense against predators is to claw and nip at an attacker. A camouflaged coat and slow movement make sloths hard to see among the leaves.

The Wonderful World of Sloths Sloths are such interesting creatures with some amazing ways of living. Facts
  • Sloths spend most of their time upside down. They eat, sleep, mate and give birth upside down. When they do go on the ground, either to switch trees or to defecate (usually once a week), they crawl or pull themselves along, as although they can stand, they cannot walk very well. However, they are very good swimmers. Sloths sleep around 15 hours per day and may take up to a month to digest a meal. Sloths are brown or grey in colour and during the wet season are often covered in a blue/green algae. They are quite well camouflaged which is a helpful defence for something so slow. Their sharp claws are also a form of defence. There are two types of sloths - two-toed and three-toed. There are several differences between them, but since this is not a scientific description of them I won't go into it ! They usually live around 10-20 years in their native habitat in trees in the rain forests of Central and South America. In captivity they may live up to 30 or 40 years. Female sloths produce one baby a year, and the newborn is about 25cm long and 350g in weight. It will stay with it's mother for about 5 weeks.

Harlan's Ground Sloth
Shasta Ground Sloth
Evolving from the tree sloths in South America, ground sloths are very distantly related to anteaters and armadillos. As this animal adapted from a tree dweller to being ground-based, its limbs still showed a relationship to its ancestors. Typically, ground sloths walked on the sides of their hind feet and the backs of their forefeet.
Harlan's ground sloth was the largest and most common of the ground sloths found at Rancho La Brea. It stood over six feet tall and weighed almost

Since the birds hang around on the TOPS of branches, what hangs around on the BOTTOM of branches? Well, sloths of course! Meet Xena Slo-Mo our two-toed sloth. She has been dazzling audiences for years. Xena Slo-Mo had a baby five years ago, and they were both featured on Discovery Channel's ANIMAL PLANET. Mama sloths create a cradle for their babies which when born, are the size of a thumb. Sloths vertebrae are connected by three joints. This puts them in the same Order as armadillos and anteaters. At top speed, sloths move through high vegetation at the rate of 100 feet per minute. Their muscles cannot support their weight to stand and are ungainly slow on the ground and move about 10 feet per minute. They pull themselves along the ground with their forearms and long claws. Sloths are excellent swimmers. They can cross a river at speeds of 45 feet per minute doing a sloth-stroke. They are capable of drifting miles downstream faster in a current. Large snakes and caiman stomachs have been found to contain sloths that did not make it downstream or across the river. The jaguar, man, harpy eagle and the ocelot are sloths' main enemies. Sloths sound off danger to other sloths using ultrasounds, the acoustic frequencies inadubile to a human's ear.

Jefferson's Ground Sloth
This ground sloth ( Megalonyx jeffersonii ) is one of the most unusual of North American Ice Age mammals. Its bones are so peculiar that whenever I encounter an "unrecognizable" large mammal bone in the Old Crow Basin of the northern Yukon, Megalonyx is the first animal I consider. This long-haired, ox-sized mammal was one of several, including the American mastodon ( Mammut americanum ), the giant short-faced bear ( Arctodus simus ) and flat-headed peccary ( Platygonus compressus ), to enter the Yukon and Alaska from southern North America. The main mammalian invasion of Canada came from Eurasia via the "Bering Isthmus". This species is of historical as well as paleontological significance, for Thomas Jefferson's lecture on Megalonyx ("great claw") to the American Philosophical Society in 1797 marked the beginning of vertebrate paleontology in North America. Appropriately, Megalonyx jeffersonii was named for the third president of the United States. Jefferson's ground sloth, the largest known species of

Sloth Sloths are extremely slow-moving mammals found in the rainforest canopies of Central and South America. There are two species of sloths:two-toed and three-toed. Most sloths are about the size of a small dog and they have short, flat flat heads. Their hair is grayish brown but, at times they look grey-green in color because they move so slowly that tiny camouflaging algae grow all over their coats. Some sloths stay in the same tree for years. Their huge hooked claws and long arms allow them to spend most of their time hanging upside-down from trees. Since they have a slow metabolism, they need very little food. They feed on fruit, leaves, buds, and young twigs. Sloths also sleep upside-down for up to 18 hours at a time. Mothers also give birth to babies upside-down. Babies cling to their mothers until they are able to take care of themselves. Sloths are nocturnal and sleep curled up with their head placed between the arms and the feet drawn close together. This disguises them as part of a tree so that its enemies like the jaguar do not see them. Sloths rarely climb down from the trees and can live for up to 30 years.

TWO-TOED SLOTH
Megalonychidae
How slow are sloths? Sloths hardly move. They sleep 20 hours out of the day. When it does move, a sloth is so slow it would take 1 month to travel about 1 km. It rarely moves more than 40m in a day. It even eats slowly, pulling leaves and branches towards its mouth in slow motion.
Why are sloths slow? To avoid predators: Birds of prey, its main predator, look out for sudden movements. So a sloth in slow motion will not register as prey. This is also why most sloths are active only at dusk or at night; most birds of prey don't have good night vision. A sloth can move quickly if it needs to, but it can't keep this up for long. VITAL STATISTICS
Size:
cm long, 4-10kg. Virtually no tail, no external ears.
Lifespan: 10-20 yrs in the wild. 2-toeds up to 30 yrs in captivity, 3-toeds seldom live more than a few months in captivity.
Babies: One young born, Gestation: 5-11 months, weaned at 5 months, maturity at 2 years.

Edentates (Xenarthrans)
Please choose an animal from the list below:
Order Xenarthra (a.k.a Edentata) Xenarthrans, also known as edentates, comprise a small group of some of the more unusual mammals. They are, for the most part, insectivores and herbivores, and are either terrestrial or arboreal in nature. They are found in the warmer climates of South America and North America, being found in Mexico and southern US in North America. Edentates usually lack incisors or canines, and of those that have them their molars lack enamel. Their teeth are held in by a single root each. Edentates have small brains. Anatomically, they have between 5-9 cervical vertebrae, whereas most other mammals have 7. Today, there are 29 species in 4 families; according to the fossil record there were at one time 12 families comprised of animals such as glyptodonts and giant ground sloths. The present-day families are: Dasypodidae (armadillos) 20 spp
Myrmecophagidae (anteaters) 4 spp
Bradypodidae (3-toed sloths) 3 spp
Megalonychidae (2-toed sloths) 2 spp Back Home

Sloths In the tropical rain forests of Central and South America, there lives the world's slowest moving mammal - the sloth. Tree dwellers, sloths carry out pretty much every activity in a suspended position high in the canopy. That's right! Sloths eat, rest, give birth, raise their young, and sleep upside-down in trees. They climb down to the ground only to use the bathroom (about once a week) or to find a different tree. So, exactly how slow do sloths move?
When sloths are in trees, their average speed is merely 360-480 feet per hour. In the case of an emergency, sloths can "accelerate" to 900 feet per hour. When sloths are on the ground, they move awkwardly and cover just 52.80 feet per hour!
Aside from the fact that sloths move no faster than a snail, they are also very inactive. They spend more than three-quarters of a day resting and sleeping. Thus, sloths can barely travel 125 feet in an entire day! Surprisingly, as slow and inactive as sloths are, they are pretty good swimmers.
