SPSC Christian Doppler Laboratory for Nonlinear Signal Processing "Smart Algorithms for Tiny Chips with Great Impact" The Christian Doppler Laboratory for Nonlinear Signal Processing (CDL-NSP) addresses fundamental research questions arising from signal processing applications which are challenging due to their nonlinear aspects. We deliver theoretical analyses, develop and optimize new algorithms and, through their implementation, build awareness for their complexity, robustness, accuracy, and power consumption trade-offs. The Christian Doppler Laboratory for Nonlinear Signal Processing plays a leading role in the solution of signal processing problems where conventional methods fail. By entering into industrial partnerships, it thrives from and supports the bidirectional exchange of know how and people between nonlinear science and the sweeping digital signal processing revolution. Alumni R ESEARCH General Description (original photo courtesy of Philip Greenspun The focus of our work is on the development of efficient algorithms for signal and image processing problems. More specifically, we address real-world problems with large dimensionality for which computationally efficient data analysis is a primary concern. Such problems arise in a wide range of areas: geophysical inverse problems (oceanography, groundwater hydrology), remote sensing problems (automatic target recognition from synthetic aperture radar), and non-destructive evaluation problems (medical imaging using tomography). We address problems in these areas by applying (1) methods in signal and image processing, (2) the theory of optimal statistical estimation and detection, and (3) multiscale methods.
