Computer Museum
The University of Virginia's Computer Museum was conceived and created by Professor Gabriel Robins , who also serves as its curator. The museum contains various computer-related artifacts, both historical and modern. Most of the artifacts shown here are physically located in display cases in the hallways of the Department of Computer Science Olsson Hall ) at the University of Virginia. These artifacts came from the personal collections of some of our faculty members , and several other donors, including Professor Sam Cooke of the University of Louisville. To see an enlarged view of any or the artifacts / photos, please click on it. The descriptive captions accompanying the photos are correct to the best of our knowledge.     A favorite with families from the Northeast, the museum features a Dinosaur Hall dominated by a life-sized replica of Tyrannosaurus Rex; the multi-level R.E. Phelon African Hall with a mounted elephant, giraffe and other animals, as well as exhibits on traditional African cultures; the Solutia Eco-Center, an aquarium and live animal center; a new Mineral Hall; the Exploration Center with hands-on exhibits investigating natural and physical science; Native American Hall; a 100-seat planetarium; an observatory; and an exhibit on the Springfield-based aviation pioneers, the Granville Brothers.
    The Underwater World of the Connecticut River , a new, permanent exhibit, features underwater photographs and artifacts that explore the biology, geology, and historical uses of the river. The museum was opened to the public in 1978, is accredited by the American Association of Museums and maintains membership in the "Natural Science Collections Alliance" .     Elephant Exhibit Click here to see a PowerPoint file of our progress on our new Elephant Exhibit. Saturday Safari Saturday Safari is a weekly program for children ages 5-10. Saturday Safari takes place Saturdays at the museum from 9:30 to noon. Each week involves a different exciting topic, such as arachnids, snakes, dinosaurs, and stinging animals. Classes are $8.00 per child, and a release form must be signed. Summer classes begin on May 15th and continue to July 31st. For a brouchure and more information, please stop by the museum or call us at 422-5051! Public Shows The Bean Museum is pleased to offer free nightly public shows! Shows are 6:30 and 7:30 on Monday, 7:30 Tuesday-Friday, and 1:30 on Saturday. The topics are as follows: Reptiles on Monday, Animal Adaptations on Tuesday, Birds on Wednesday, Snakes on Thursday, Venomous Animals on Friday, and Reptiles on Saturday. We hope to see you there!
