By this definition, the Moon is a satellite to the Earth and the Earth is a satellite to the Sun. However, for this reference, a satellite is a human-made spacecraft placed in space to orbit another body. These spacecraft can be crewed, such as the Space Shuttle, or uncrewed, such as NASA's Hubble Space Telescope. What is Orbit? - Excellent article and lesson plans from NASAexplores about types of orbits. Separate versions of the article and classroom activities are listed for grades K-4, 5-8, and 9-12. Satellites - A Global View of Earth Fact Sheet - In the 1960's technology enabled us to observe our planet from space - giving humans our first global view of Earth. This fact sheet reviews the role of satellites since the Soviets launched the first "artificial satellite," Sputnik 1 in 1957. It also highlights some ongoing NASA satellite missions at NASA Langley.

These receivers operate from 146 to 170 Mhz using low side oscillator injection, with a non-standard (10.8) mhz Intermediate Frequency. By utilizing High side injection with the oscillator above the input frequency we can receive 137Mhz simply by selecting a frequency 21.6 mhz above 137.xx Mhz. Iridium Flares

Former ASSA member, Craig Richardson, took this photograph of an Iridium flare (Iridium 62) at 18:38 (local time) on 30 July 1998. He used a 55mm f/1.8 Minolta lens with Kodak PPF400 film for the 30 second exposure. The star Arcturus is at the far left amongst the tree branches. "The clouds parted just long enough for me to take the photo!", said Craig.
    Observing Satellites
Many people will already be aware of the large number of orbiting satellites to be seen in the hour or two after sunset and before sunrise. There are probably about 400 objects visible to the naked eye out of the 8,000 or so currently in orbit. The brightest regular object is the Russian Space Station Mir (magnitude 0). The US Space shuttles are brighter - as bright as Jupiter at magnitude -2.5 - but not of course in orbit all the time.
Many of the objects seen are the last stage of a launch vehicle and are rotating, and hence vary in brightness as the visible cross-section varies. Some objects like COBE are deliberately spinning.

    http://www.projectpluto.com/jevent.htm
Jupiter satellite events and GRS times for 2004 Following are times for the shadow, transit, occultation, and eclipse events for Jupiter's four major satellites over the above time period. All times are in Universal Time (UT) Jupiter is in conjunction with the sun on 21 September 2004, so some of these events are of theoretical interest only. All of these tables were generated with Guide 8.0 , which provides a pretty simple way to create tables of satellite events and/or Great Red Spot transits for a specific period. ( Click here for a table of Great Red Spot transit times Alternatively, this site provides up-to-date Jupiter observations and transit times. In fact, this is the site I used to get the current longitude of the GRS, for use in computing the transit times. Some C/C++ source code, and a DOS executable, for computing tables of Jovian events can be downloaded from this site. Also, Akkana Peck has provided a Jovian moon/shadow transit program in Java, with source. The Web site of the R.A.S.N.Z. (Royal Astronomical Society of New Zealand) Occultation Section
