New Uranian Satellites
The discovery of two new distant Uranian satellites (designated S/1997 U 1 and S/1997 U 2) was announced on IAUC and IAUC The plot below shows the orbits of the new satellites in relation to Uranus. It is based on the orbits published on IAUC and IAUC . It must not be reproduced in any form without the express written permission of the Central Bureau for Astronomical Telegrams. In this view, the new satellites are moving counterclockwise. The position of each object is marked at 10-day intervals, the first point plotted being 1997 Sept. 9, the last being 1999 Apr. 12 (for S/1997 U 1) and 2001 Mar. 22 (for S/1997 U 2). The non-closure of the apparent orbit of S/1997 U 1 is a geometric effect due to the relative motions of the earth and Uranus. The "weird" apparent orbit of S/1997 U 2 is also due to the same effectthe effect is magnified for this object due to its extremely long orbital period (1289 days). The orbit of the outermost regular satellite (Uranus IV, Oberon) is shown by the small ellipse centered on (0,0). Uranus is represented by the dot at (0,0)the disk is magnified two times. North is up and east is to the left. Credits.

Translated by Allen Thomson
Active use of equipment for collecting intelligence from radio signals began in the USA during the Second World War. The American admiral C. Nimitz in evaluating the role which such equipment played in the Pacific Theater said that having them was of equal value to having an additional fleet. However, the significance of SIGINT [radioelektronnaya razvedka (RER)] grew even more after the end of WW II. In 1952 the National Security Agency (NSA) was created, which served to concentrate all of the USA's efforts in SIGINT operations, development of the required equipment, and protection of information transmitted over national communications lines. Official data on the budget and staffing are lacking, but experts estimate that around 10 billion dollars are expended each year on the needs of the NSA, and that there are 50-100 thousand people on staff (of whom 80 percent are civilian specialists). The special position of the NSA is explained by the exceptional importance of the intelligence it obtains on military, political and economic matters, which is then actively used by the US leadership in working out its political course or in undertaking actions of a military and economic nature. Timely creation of an organizational structure with wide-ranging powers and generous financing enabled the USA to deploy around the world a whole arsenal of SIGINT equipment, the most important and expensive of which were space systems.

By the end of the 20th century, more than 2,200 satellites were circling the planet, many of them providing steady streams of scientific data, along with views of the Earth never before imagined possible.
Satellites, combined with state-of-the-art imaging techniques, offer ordinary humans something heretofore found only among comic-book superheroes: the gift of super sight.
Remote sensing consists of using aerial photography and other methods to view what cannot be seen with the unaided eye. Various techniques allow the identification of soils, vegetation, mineral resources, seasonal crop growth, and changes brought about by storms and floods. Surface temperatures can be detected, revealing movements of groundwater, and even the nocturnal wanderings of animals by their heat shadows.

The Discovery of the Galilean Satellites
The Discovery of the Galilean Satellites
Written By Ron Baalke
Galileo's Letter to Prince of Venice
Diagram Translation Galileo realized that the telescope had applications that reached beyond astronomy:
"Most Serene Prince. Galileo Galilei most humbly prostrates himself before Your Highness, watching carefully, and with all spirit of willingness, not only to satisfy what concerns the reading of mathematics in the study of Padua, but to write of having decided to present to Your Highness a telescope ("Occhiale") that will be a great help in maritime and land enterprises. I assure you I shall keep this new invention a great secret and show it only to Your Highness. The telescope was made for the most accurate study of distances. This telescope has the advantage of discovering the ships of the enemy two hours before they can be seen with the natural vision and to distinguish the number and quality of the ships and to judge their strength and be ready to chase them, to fight them, or to flee from them; or, in the open country to see all details and to distinguish every movement and preparation."
Galileo's Observations of Jupiter's Moons
Galileo published his observations in Sidereus Nuncius in March 1610:
"I therefore concluded, and decided unhesitatingly, that there are three stars in the heavens moving about Jupiter, as Venus and Mercury around the Sun; which was at length established as clear as daylight by numerous other subsequent observations. These observations also established that there are not only three, but four, erratic sidereal bodies performing their revolutions around Jupiter."

NASA is evaluating the possibility of adding Space Power as a Mission Area for MSFC, under which MSFC would manage development and research activities associated with Space Solar and/or Nuclear power systems. NASA is also evaluating the possibility of assigning MSFC as lead Center for integration of propulsion and power for orbital transfer of large missions. These decisions have not been made at this time."

EVANSTON, Ill. - People in the central and eastern United States and Canada are used to the idea that the land they live on its variety of hills, lakes and rivers are left over from the great mile-thick ice sheets that covered the area 18,000 years ago.

Satellites show L.A. area's yearly rise, fall
Geologists say the Los Angeles area experiences seasonal rises and falls. Menlo Park, California (CNN) Geologists say they have proof that much of the Metropolitan Los Angeles area literally rises and falls with the seasons. A team led by Gerald Bawden at the United States Geological Survey in Menlo Park, California, used data from 250 Global Positioning Satellite monitoring stations to conclude that seasonal rises and falls in groundwater levels cause the ground level to rise each winter and sink each summer in Los Angeles. In some areas, the seasonal difference can be as much as 12 centimeters (just under five inches). The USGS team measured the phenomenon in a roughly oval-shaped area from downtown Los Angeles on the north, to Compton and Long Beach on the west, south to Newport Beach and then east to the Santa Ana Mountains. The researchers say the new discovery of this seasonal activity may actually complicate their main task of monitoring for earthquakes. The GPS network is designed to search for possible hints of upcoming earthquakes by detecting minuscule movements in the earth's crust. Now, with the earth's surface apparently moving for other reasons, advance warnings of some earthquakes may be more difficult to deliver. Human activity the pumping out of groundwater used for drinking water in Orange County and elsewhere in the Los Angeles area, and oil drilling south of the city may also contribute to changing the ground level, further clouding the earthquake monitoring data.

Information on the irregular satellite system of Saturn
In 1898, William Pickering discovered the first irregular satellite of Saturn, known as Phoebe.
In 2000 many new satellites were discovered by an international collaboration of astronomers.
The links below provide additional information on these new saturnian satellites. UPDATE (January 2003) : Between August and December 2002 all 12 of the new satellites which received designations in 2000 have been recovered by our team at a variety of telescopes around the world. As a result, all satellites have now been observed at 3 oppositions. Only minor modifications of their orbits have occurred as a result of these tracking observations (see orbital information links at the bottom of this page). These twelve satellites have now reached a stage of orbital precision to receive full (Roman numeral) designations by the International Astronomical Union. The deadline was August 31, 2003 Organization The conference is organized by the Isaac Newton Group of Telescopes (ING) , La Palma, and the , Tenerife, Canary Islands, Spain. The conference will be held at Hotel H10 Taburiente Playa, Los Cancajos, La Palma. Scientific Aim: Current cosmological models predict that galaxies form through the merging of smaller substructures. Satellites and tidal streams might then represent the visible remains of the building blocks of giant galaxies. They therefore provide important information on the merging history and galaxy formation in the Universe.
In this conference the observational evidence for substructures, their internal structure and their dynamical evolution and disruption within the tidal field of the host galaxy will be discussed and confronted with theoretical cosmological predictions of hierarchical merging and galaxy formation.
