Tucked in among the glam metal acts that saturated MTV in 1986, roots rockers The Georgia Satellites reminded us to "Keep Your Hands To Yourself." Photographing Satellites
2003 November 8 Photo of the Hubble Space Telescope crossing the summer Milky Way. Taken from Mount Pinos, California.
    Introduction
Photographing artificial earth satellites is a challenging facet of astrophotography that requires only simple equipment, a dark sky, a good technique, and a measure of luck.
    Equipment
The suggested equipment is relatively simple and consists of:
    • Camera body capable of making time exposures
    • 50mm lens that can be opened to f/2.8
    • Film
    • Tripod
    • Cable release
    • Watch or clock with a seconds display
    • Precision compass
    • Clinometer
The precision compass and clinometer are very useful, but not absolutely necessary. The following table lists several films for satellite photography. With the exception of TMAX P3200, they are all color print emulsions. There are probably other suitable films, but I've only listed those I've actually used with good results. One film I do not recommended is Konica SR-G3200; it's so grainy the images it produces are unusable. A good rule of thumb for selecting a film is to read the various astronomy magazines and see which films veteran astrophotographers are using. ASA Film Application Fuji HQ 100, Kodak Gold 100

Resurs-O1 image archive We started regular acquisition of Resurs-O1-3 images in May 1996. Now our archive provides a rich unique collection of information about the Earth's land surface obtained with help of Russian Resurs-O1-3 and Resurs-O1-4 satellites. On 1st January 2000 the archive contained more than 600 GB of data. Several receiving centers equipped with our ScanER stations are contributing to the archive. This helps us to acquire direct download mode images covering territory from the Atlantic to Pacific ocean.

    SPACE SHUTTLE STS-79 RE-ENTRY
This is a photo I took of the Space Shuttle STS-79 as it re-entered the Earth's atmosphere north of Silverdale, WA, USA, September 1996. The RED streak is the space shuttle glowing with the heat of friction. It appears as a streak because the camera shutter was open for 3 seconds as the Space Shuttle moved across the field. The YELLOW streak is the luminous plasma trail that the Space Shuttle left across the sky. The trail persisted for about a minute. Nikon 105mm lens, F/4, Kodak Gold 1000ASA, 3 seconds. My photo was published in Sky and Telescope magazine Feb 1997 and used by the astronauts in their post-flight lectures. Click here for a larger JPG 32k , of this image. INTERNATIONAL SPACE STATION (ISS) January 2001, ISS is easy to hear with any police scanner or radio that can receive 143.625 MHZ FM. I have been listening to them talk with ground stations as they pass over my location a few times a day. They usually work between 0600 and 2000 GMT and speak mostly in Russian. Here are some recordings I made.
