China to launch six weather satellites
BEIJING, China (Reuters) China plans to launch six weather satellites between 2002 and the 2008 Olympic Games in Beijing, the official Xinhua news agency said on Friday. The satellites would help monitor and forecast weather for the Games, as well as having other benefits, it said. China would send the first, "Fengyun 1-D," into orbit before June 2002 using a Chinese-made Long March 4 rocket, the report said. More would be launched in 2003, 2004, 2006 and 2008, it quoted Dong Chaohua, director of the National Satellite Meteorological Center, as saying. China is eager to get a bigger slice of the lucrative international market for launching commercial satellites. New Satellites of Jupiter Discovered in 2003
A work in progress: Most recent update Feb. 4, 2004 This page describes the discovery of 23 new satellites of Jupiter, bringing the total of known Jupiter satellites to 63. Discovery of the New Satellites The majority of the new satellites were first seen in early February 2003 by Scott S. Sheppard and David C. Jewitt from the Institute for Astronomy, University of Hawaii along with Jan Kleyna of Cambridge University. The satellites were detected using the world's two largest digital cameras at the Subaru (8.3 meter diameter) and Canada-France-Hawaii (3.6 meter diameter) telescopes atop Mauna Kea in Hawaii. Both telescopes and their imaging cameras represent the latest technology has to offer. Recoveries were performed at the University of Hawaii 2.2 meter with help from Yanga Fernandez and Henry Hsieh also from the University of Hawaii. Brian Marsden of the Harvard-Smithsonian Center for Astrophysics performed the orbit fitting for the new satellites. The first 7 satellites were formally announced by the International Astronomical Union on Circular No. 8087

NASA satellites to use artificial intelligence
Artist depiction of an undeployed stack of three experimental satellites that will use AI software By Richard Stenger CNN (CNN) Software that can make decisions without guidance from humans will guide a constellation of spacecraft that launch in 2002, according to NASA. The Artificial Intelligence program will direct three sibling satellites, allowing them to respond to events on their own, said NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory, which will manage the mission. The miniature satellites, each of which weighs less than 33 pounds (15 kg), will fly in a tight formation in orbit as part of the Three Corner Sat mission. "The onboard software will perform decision-making function for the spacecraft," said lead project scientist Steve Chien. "Like a brain that uses inputs from the eyes and ears to make decisions, this software uses data from spacecraft sensors, such as cameras, to make decisions on how to carry out the mission." NASA has dabbled before in using artificial intelligence to govern a spacecraft. During one experiment AI software controlled the Deep Space I robot ship, currently en route to an encounter with a comet.

Saturn Science Saturn Science Summary Saturn Exploration Chronology The Cassini Mission Saturn Image/Animation Gallery Other Resources Saturn's Ring System Saturn is the sixth planet from the Sun and is the second largest in the solar system with an equatorial diameter of 119,300 kilometers (74,130 miles). Much of what is known about the planet is due to the Voyager explorations in 1980-81. Saturn is visibly flattened at the poles, a result of the very fast rotation of the planet on its axis. Its day is 10 hours, 39 minutes long, and it takes 29.5 Earth years to revolve about the Sun. The atmosphere is primarily composed of hydrogen with small amounts of helium and methane. Saturn is the only planet less dense than water (about 30 percent less). In the unlikely event that a large enough ocean could be found, Saturn would float in it. Saturn's hazy yellow hue is marked by broad atmospheric banding similar to, but fainter than, that found on Jupiter The wind blows at high speeds on Saturn. Near the equator, it reaches velocities of 500 meters a second (1,100 miles an hour). The wind blows mostly in an easterly direction. The strongest winds are found near the equator and velocity falls off uniformly at higher latitudes. At latitudes greater than 35 degrees, winds alternate east and west as latitude increases.

52. Experimental Gravitational Physics Using Drag-Free Satellites
Covers current and past projects in experimental gravitational physics using DragFree satellites including the Relativity Gyro, Equivalence Principle, and LISA.
http://www.dragfreesatellite.com
What Is a Drag-Free Satellite?
The classical Drag-Free Satellite is actually two satellites in one. A small inner, usually spherical, proof mass is located in a cavity inside of a larger normal satellite. The cavity contains sensors, capacitive or optical, which measure the position of the proof mass with respect to the outer satellite. The main satellite has small thrusters or jets which are fired so that the satellite chases the proof mass which then always remains centered in the cavity. Since the proof mass is shielded by the outer satellite from gas drag and solar radiation pressure, it follows a trajectory which is determined only by gravity and the very small internal disturbing forces from the satellite. Hence the name Drag-Free Satellite since there is no drag on the inner proof mass, and the drag on the main satellite is exactly compensated by the thrusters. (Also see other Drag-Free Satellite configurations
Experimental Gravitational Physics With Drag-Free Satellites
Drag-Free Satellites offer an environment with the lowest disturbing forces in nature. A properly designed Drag-Free-Satellite proof mass is uncoupled from the rest of the Universe to a remarkable degree.

Introduction
This web page allows users to determine when the International Space Station will be in range for visual observations or for radio communications . Data are provided in tabular form for locations in the United States and Canada. Please note that due to the relatively low orbital altitude of the ISS the observed angles on the sky and also the track times can deviate noticeably from the predicted ones if the observer is not within a 100 mile radius of the selected location. In addition, there may be considerable deviations due to occasional orbit adjustment maneuvers that are not taken into account when the pass predictions are generated.
Pass Prediction Format
The prediction tables give the circumstances, i.e. the timing, geometry and visibility conditions, for every pass in the format shown in the following example: Date (PST) Time (PST) of Duration Azimuth at Max Visib Orbit MET at AOS AOS MEL LOS of Pass AOS MEL LOS Elev Code Thu 15-Nov-2001 03:01:36 03:06:40 03:11:44 00:10:08 233 146 67 55.8 NNNNN 17070 1091/04:21:36 Thu 15-Nov-2001 04:37:26 04:42:31 04:47:34 00:10:08 268 351 70 42.8 NNNNV 17071 1091/05:57:26 Thu 15-Nov-2001 06:13:34 06:18:39 06:23:42 00:10:08 288 10 90 40.8
