SAFETY ENGINEERING
Safety engineering is applied to project developments throughout the different project steps: from feasibility to basic, to detail design phase.
Safety engineering analyses developed by D'Appolonia include:
  • safety risk analyses fire and blast analyses working environment analyses (including noise and vibration control, ergonomic studies, escape evaluation studies, exposure evaluation study) Hazard Operability analyses (HAZOP) Hazard Identification studies (HAZID) Hazard Analyses (HAZAN)
Risk assessment and reliability prediction are developed by using methods such as Fault Tree Analysis, Event Tree Analysis, Failure Modes Effects and Criticality Analysis, Human Error, Marker Models Analysis and System Simulation.
In the field of reliability analysis D'Appolonia offers reliability evaluation of structural components, probabilistic analyses for structural redundancy and system behavior, reliability assessment of existing structures, failure analysis and hazard and fragility analysis. These analyses require the identification of the sources of uncertainties which may include environmental effects, structural properties, mechanical behavior, soil properties, and accidental effects. For each of these sources, physical models and statistical uncertainties are evaluated, also by using a Bayesian approach, which enables the integration of subjective judgment and available data.

Abstract:
Much of the world is engaged in the transition from prescriptive codes to performance-based codes for the regulation of safety in the built environment. The motivation for these changes is the concept that sensible regulations lead to improved flexibility of design and lower costs for no reduction in safety. In such a construction climate it is easier to attract international business development with its attendant jobs and growth of the tax base, especially in these times of the global marketplace. This paper presents a vision of the futuer development of HAZARD I and its primary components in the context of its application to fire safety engineering analysis supporting performance-based codes.
