Computer Modelling in Safety Engineering Engineering Applications
Rapid advances in computer technology over the past few years have opened up many possibilities for new applications of computer modelling in the engineering field. These include: Finite Element Analysis (FEA) - a numerical method using geometric models divided into meshes of many elements for modelling a wide range of physical phenomena in two and three dimensions.
Boundary Element Modelling (BEM)
- just the surfaces are meshed rather than the volume as in FEA.
Dynamic Simulation
- combining Computer Aided Drafting (CAD) and dynamic simulation programs for modelling the motion of individual parts, assemblies and the interaction of parts on a step time basis.
Typical applications include modelling mechanical failures and the behaviour of structures in three dimensions, analysing crack growth, and predicting stresses and strains of components and structures. The Health and Safety Laboratory (HSL) has been keeping pace with these advances and has expertise in all these areas. Using state of the art computer hardware and software, we have successfully applied these techniques in the investigation of many safety-related problems.

Hazard-Based Safety Engineering (HBSE)
Applying Engineering Fundamentals to the Design and Analysis of Provably Safe Products
Selected by an experts' panel of California Fire Chiefs Association as an important new Analytical Model and a Process for Preventing Injury and Fire.
Why HBSE?
As a product design/safety professional, or perhaps as a manager of your company's product engineering processes, you may have struggled at times balancing your product's safety requirements and guidelines against other important parameters, such as usability, cost, and customer satisfaction. Have you ever wondered why certain safety requirements exist, especially when they seem to impact your creativity or production schedule? Occasionally, you may propose a design not foreseen by current safety standards. Is your new design equivalently safe? What specific hazards does it anticipate? What safeguards can you incorporate to prevent those hazards from causing injury? HBSE is a process that gives you tools to answer those questions.
How will this seminar help?

Risk And Resistance Approach At CREA , the Resistance to Accidental and Extreme Loads goes hand in hand with the Probability Based Risk Assessment. This Integrated Risk and Resistance Approach adopted by CREA differs from that normally associated with the industry in that the assessment provides a good balance between engineering solutions and judgement based on long industry experience, and both probabilistic and deterministic mathematical modelling. A successful optimum solution is normally achieved by combination of both the probability of loss being within acceptance criteria and a corresponding plant resistance.

Is your safety programme costing more than it needs to?
Our proven approach shows that the system is acceptably safe while minimising certification effort.
We integrate all aspects of the safety lifecycle including safety management and engineering to principle. We present the evidence gathered throughout the process to support certification. We continually research ways to improve and extend our approach and apply it to new technologies.
We design and develop safety management systems:
Our risk-based approach to safety engineering combines applied research with practical experience (including HAZOPS, FFA, FTA, ETA, FMEA). Being design-centred ensures we focus on what is needed for a specific project.

Rail Safety Experience

Our experience in railway safety includes:
Yellow Book
"Praxis Critical Systems Ltd has been closely involved with the Engineering Safety Management handbook, or the Yellow Book as it is more commonly known, since 1992. In this time, they have contributed significantly to the development and dissemination of good system safety engineering practice within the UK rail industry. Praxis Critical Systems continue to provide a professional focus for Yellow Book training, user group management and Yellow Book improvement."
Rod Muttram, Railway Safety
Praxis Critical Systems has led the development of the " Yellow Book " since its inception in 1992. The Yellow Book (also known as "Engineering Safety Management") provides in-depth guidance on managing safety in the railway industry. The Yellow Book guidance takes the best ideas from across industry and shows how projects can achieve and demonstrate acceptable levels of safety. The guidance is scalable to project size and level of risk. We have a proven track record in working alongside organisations who need to produce safety cases in the rail industry.
