BEST stands for "Boosting Engineering, Science, and Technology." The BEST program is based on an annual robotics competition of teams from high schools and middle schools. It is designed to teach teamwork, problem solving, project management, and pride in task completion within the constraints of a short time period and limited physical resources. Through partnerships of participating schools with corporate sponsors, youth teams are supported by mentors who serve as positive role models for the next generation of scientists, engineers, and technologists. The goal is to demonstrate the excitement of advanced technical careers to young people who are nearing decisions on college plans. Team membership is open to all interested students, and participation is without fee to the students or the schools.

Manchester Robotics Home Research Teaching People ... Robots
Welcome
Within these pages you will find information about robotics at the Department of Computer science, University of Manchester, UK.
Robotics at manchester
Manchester robotics are researching into the future of robotic systems, where robots are not hidden behind cages on manufacturing lines, but are a positive factor in our everyday lives. We are developing medical robots to administer robotic physiotherapy for conditions such as stroke and cerebral palsy. Furthermore we are researching into assisting a damaged human heart through a robotic device to squeeze the outside of the heart.
Robotic physiotherapy
If robots are to behave autonomously then they must have the capability of independent movement and 'intelligent' control strategies. Manchester robotics has a long history of developing adaptive 'intelligent' controllers for mobile robotic systems. These mobile robotic systems can be either locomoted by wheels, legs or alternative novel methods.
Mobile robotics
Robots that are in everyday contact with humans must be designed and controlled in a suitable manner.

About the Course
This course uses LEGO beams, plates, gears, motors, a 68HC11 microcontroller board programmed in C, and various sensors to construct autonomous ( i.e., self-contained, no direct human control) robots. The first half of the course is structured exercises in practical programming, LEGO mechanics, sensor principles, and software design, all presented with a biological slantwe consider autonomous robots to be model systems for the study of animal behavior. The second half of the course is spent designing robots which can compete in a public Egg Hunt competition.

"To invent you need a good imagination and a pile of junk."
-Thomas Alva Edison Ever since robots have been invented, people have been very interested in them. Robotic technology has made many things possible, including (1) space and deep sea exploration, (2) dangerous military and police missions, (3) new types of entertainment, and (4) life-like new toys that talk and respond like real creatures. I. History of the words "ROBOT" and "ROBOTICS": This is a robot from the 1921 play "R.U.R." (image from the Robot Museum web site). The word Robot comes from the 1921 play "R.U.R."
