LightScan
Using the Java applet on the right you can pick out the differnet components of the LightScan I wanted to wait until I had an additional light sensor, motor and a rotational sensor before I built LightScan. With the additional component it would be easy to compare readings from each light sensor and rotate the vehicle to line up with the sensor turret. The most difficult part of LightScan is the programming, which could not be done with the usual graphical interface.
With this script language I created a program that would follow the following steps. 1: Read in the value from the light sensor mounted at the front of LightScan
2: Compare that value with any previous readings
3: Turn and move towards the best value
All the while check for presses of the button, which mwould change the search from light to dark and vise versa
I had some trouble in intitial testing that proved to be simply the cogs very in reverse order, so a Large cog connected to the motor was connected to a small cog on the track, which increased speed but lowered power so much even the tracks would not turn, even if the whole unit was not touching the ground. After swapping the cogs around the unit had plenty of power on which to drive and happily went off in search of bright lights (unitl i pressed the button and it went in search of dark places).

My view of sensor networks in 2010
The two figures above represent where we are and where we'd like to be. On the left is where we hope to be in July of '01 - a cubic millimeter device with a sensor, power supply, analog circuitry, bidirectional optical communication, and a programmable microprocessor. Click on the figure to get more detail. On the right is where we are now (July '99) - a (currently) non-functional mote with a volume of about 100 cubic millimeters. There are two silicon chips sitting on a type-5 hearing aid battery. The right chip is a MEMS corner cube optical transmitter array - it works. On the right is a CMOS ASIC with an optical receiver, charge pump, and simple digital controller - it doesn't work (we violated some of the design rules in the 0.25 micron process, but the next one should work).

http://www.biobot.info
Biobot.info
A "Biobot" is a robot that is designed to: (1) imitate the structure or physiology of a biological organism; (2) connect and integrate biological and mechanical components in its operation; or (3) both. Biological functions and processes imitated or integrated with mechanical systems can include: movement (e.g. walking), power generation (e.g. digestion), sensing and communication (e.g. language recognition and formation), and learning and control (e.g. neural adaptation). Biobots can emulate the ability of living organisms to walk using gyroscopic balancing, algorithms to anticipate changes in center of gravity, and motion structures that imitate those of living organizations. Biobots can extract power from chemical processing of materials from their environment, reminiscent of how biological organisms extract power with their digestive systems. Biobots can sense and communicate using light, sound and contact in a variety of modalities and frequencies like biological creatures. Biobots with adaptive learning capabilities may be able to survive in complex environments as do biological organisms.
