Frogs and Toads Turtles ... Acknowledgements [8KB] Updated March 26, 2003 About these pages
  • The translations page covers the scientific names of native North American amphibians and reptiles (north of Mexico) and is arranged alphabetically within order.
  • It lists the original describer and year of description. If the species is in a different genus than originally described, the name and year are in parenthesis.
  • It is a reference and checklist to scientific names and currently accepted common names.
  • Use the "Find in Page" utility of your browser to search individual terms in English, Latin, Greek, coined "new Latin" or the various Native American languages which have been used to create the scientific names.
  • Names currently not accepted are retained because of the fluid nature of taxonomy and as a curiosity of things past.
  • This information is provided as a service to researchers, herpetologists and students of scientific nomenclature. Please browse, but do not print unless you have a real need for a printed copy. The whole document takes more than a full ream of paper and possibly more than one full ink cartridge, depending on your printer. Remember, updates are continuous - for the most up-to-the minute version, don't forget to hit "refresh."

Amongst other important adaptations that enabled them to do this was their impermeable skin that prevents desiccation of the body fluids, as well as affording some protection against other animals. Some reptiles, such as crocodiles, go even further and have sections where the bone directly supports the skin, forming `osteoderms'. Turtles have developed a hard layer of `scutes' atop the extension of their ribs that comprises their shell. This is still part of the skin, however, and a turtle can thus bleed from damage to the shell. Other important factors in enabling the reptiles to invade land were elements of their reproductive cycle. While many rely on pressing of the cloacas, in other groups the males have actually developed a penile organ (or two), to transmit sperm directly. After successful mating, the female usually digs a hole into a substrate into which she will lay her eggs. These eggs were another important step in colonising land. They are covered with a hard shell that is secreted by the mother as it develops through the body. Within this exterior casing, is contained a separate environment in which the embryo can develop.

Herman Melville, who visited the Galapagos in 1837, just after Darwin, took a bleak view of the archipelago's fauna: " Another feature in these isles is their emphatic uninhabitableness....Little but reptile life is here found: - tortoises, lizards, immense spiders, snakes, and the strangest anomaly of outlandish Nature, the aguano. No voice, no low, no howl is heard; the chief sound of life here is a hiss." While "immense spiders" certainly are not reptiles, the Galapagos Islands are indeed known for their rich reptilian population, beginning with the giant tortoises , the "galapagos" from which the archipeligo derives its name. It was the giant tortoises, with 11 subspecies scattered about the archipelago, that first called Darwin's attention to the amazing diversity of the Galapagos wildlife. Sea turtles also call the Galapagos home. The most commonly seen sea turtle is the green sea turtle , which is considered to be endangered throughout its range, except in the Galapagos.

Related Books and Items Recent studies indicated that the iguana iguana or known as the rainforest common green iguana is one of the few completely herbivorous (plant-eating) lizard in its natural habitat. Therefore, the information on iguana care and its food supply should be based on that aspect. It is important then, to consider physiology, environment and diet in order to keep an iguana in the picture of good health. Iguana management is dependent on the understanding of the digestive system of a pet. They are considered Hind-Gut fermenters which means the general well being is directed by the lower intestinal tract. The lower intestinal tract is responsible for vitamin production, fatty acid production, water reabsorption, etc. It is essential then that, even in juvenile iguanas, a crude fiber of 14-16% should be observed to satisfy this requirement. Older iguanas should receive a greater proportion of 16-18% in their diets. It is noteworthy to caution that many iguanas suffer for malnutrition and inappropriate management resulting in unwanted, sick or abandoned lizards. It is difficult to get an accurate guide for care since many recommendations are based on personal experience and not scientific research. So the best way to approach it is to examine the wild iguana's natural habitat and food supply.
