Acoustical methods are the primary remote-sensing tool in the aquatic environment. The fifth ICES Symposium on acoustics of aquatic systems will explore recent advances and the expansion of acoustical methods into a broad range of environments. New analytical techniques, new technologies, and innovative acoustical implementations are changing the way we evaluate aquatic life. This ICES Symposium, the first on this topic to be held in the new millennium, will provide a unique opportunity for the international community to take stock of this rapidly evolving field. OBJECTIVES AND SCOPE Since the first symposium on fisheries acoustics, 30 years ago, these methods have been used extensively for observation and measurement in oceans, lakes, and rivers. Scales of study extend from a few centimetres to hundreds of kilometres, and from individual organisms to entire populations of fish and plankton. NOAA Operations - Special Bulletins AVHRR Imagery T he primary focus of this site is the near real-time presentation of sea surface temperature imagery for research and educational purposes. The Satellite Communications Facility at the Johns Hopkins University Applied Physics Laboratory regularly receives and the Ocean Remote Sensing Group records and processes imagery from the Advanced High Resolution Radiometer (AVHRR) on the NOAA polar-orbiting satellites. For a discussion of the computation of sea surface temperature, please consult our primer (HTML) or (PDF) We present here sample images of forest fires and hurricanes from AVHRR Imagery. The real-time positions of the NOAA polar orbiting satellites are provided by NASA, Current information about the status of the NOAA satellites can be found at NOAASIS. The Environmental Resources Spatial Analysis Center (ERSAC) was established in 1995 to develop a unified computing environment for research on spatial analysis and modeling of natural resources and environment. Acquisition of state-of-the-art computer, network, and software facilities has enabled researchers in eight departments and five colleges on the Twin Cities Campus to effectively use geographic information systems (GIS) and related geospatial technologies in research on spatial patterns and relationships of natural resources and environment at landscape to regional scales. The unified approach to providing of hardware-software facilities has increased capability and productivity, while decreasing costs compared to the more traditional purchase and administration of facilities by individual departments.
