The first International Symposium on Remote Sensing of Environment was first convened in 1962 in Ann Arbor, Michigan. It was hosted by the Willow Run Laboratories of the University of Michigan. The Symposium brought together scientists from around the world to exchange technical information on an emerging technology called remote sensing, a technology which provided the capability of viewing the Earth from high-altitude aircraft and, ultimately, spacecraft. Since that meeting in 1962, twenty-four additional symposia were convened at various venues around the world by Willow Run Laboratories and its successor organization, the Environmental Research Institute of Michigan (ERIM).

http://games.bio.ucf.edu/
The G eospatial A nalysis and M odeling of E cological S ystems Lab oratory in the Department of Biology at the University of Central Florida was developed to integrate geographic information system (GIS) and remote sensing technology with ecological modeling to simulate dynamic, spatially-explicit patterns and processes at scales ranging from individual organisms to landscapes. The lab resides in Room 101 of the Biological Sciences Building and consists of a computer network operating Windows NT/2000/XP and Linux environments. These computers run remote sensing / image processing (e.g., IDL/ENVI), GIS (Arc/Info NT, ArcView 3.x, 8.x), and other miscellaneous analysis (e.g., Visual C++, Fortran 90, S-Plus) software. Additional hardware includes a variety of office (e.g., digitizing tablet, a flatbed scanner, a color laser printer, and a large format poster printer) and field (e.g., differential correcting GPS units, laser range finders, digital canopy imager, and miscellaneous forest mensuration devices) equipment.

The Remote Sensing Data Analysis Service (RSDAS) is funded by NERC to support UK research scientists with remote sensing data and information. This includes guiding research vessels at sea with a wide range of data products, and the maintenance of an archive of data which is as up to date as possible, both in terms of coverage and processing techniques. The service is provided by the Remote Sensing Group (RSG) at the Plymouth Marine Laboratory (PML) in collaboration with the NERC Satellite Receiving Station, Dundee (DSRS) The aim of RSDAS is to provide processed SeaWiFS and AVHRR data for use by environmental scientists who are not necessarily specialists in remote sensing, or do not have access to image analysis hardware or software. The RSMAS Remote Sensing Group (RSG) is an interdisciplinary research group primarily based in the Division of Meteorology and Physical Oceanography of the Rosenstiel School, but with members distributed in Physics, Applied Marine Physics and Marine Biology and Fisheries. It is engaged in research and graduate instruction in the techniques of satellite oceanography and their application to problems in physical, biological and chemical oceanography. There is a strong link to the Atmospheric and Ocean Optics Group in the Physics Department. Current efforts range from analysis of satellite observations to theoretical radiative transfer modeling of the earth-atmosphere system. Global and regional satellite observations of sea surface temperature [ NOAA /AVHRR], color [NIMBUS-7/CZCS and SeaStar/SeaWiFS ], topography [GEOSAT, ERS-1 and TOPEX ], and winds [ERS-1] are being investigated presently. Present program directed research supports national and international programs including Tropical Ocean and Global Atmosphere (TOGA), Joint Global Ocean Flux Studies ( JGOFS ), Mission to Planet Earth, Earth Observing System (

Remote Sensing and Archaeology: The Chora of Chersonesos
    Principal Investigators:
Dr. Joseph Carter, Institute of Classical Archaeology, University of Texas at Austin
Dr. Melba Crawford, Center for Space Research, University of Texas at Austin
    Introduction
Chersonesos, located on the north coast of the Black Sea, is an ancient Greek colony with a uniquely preserved agricultural territory. The Center for Space Research (CSR), in collaboration with the University of Texas Institute of Classical Archaeology (ICA), is investigating the use of remote sensing in a comprehensive regional study of this ancient agricultural territory. Understanding the overall pattern of the dividing roads and the relationship between the pattern of human settlement and the natural environment is one of the main goals of this project. Unfortunately, Chersonesos is threatened by natural and anthropogenic factors, such as coastal erosion and urban encroachment. Therefore, the primary impetus of this project is to investigate the use of satellite and airborne imagery in providing the best possible protection for Chersonesos.
