AERIAL PHOTOGRAPHY
Catalog of Aerial Photography
A unique and highly used collection of aerial photography is housed with the map collection. Unlike maps, which portray the physical and cultural landscape with generalized symbols and colors, aerial photography reveals the terrain as it exists in nature. All buildings, bridges, roads, urban and rural areas, and other man-made features are depicted as they were at the time of photography. Physical features, such as vegetation type and distribution, river widths and courses, shorelines, landslide areas, etc. are shown with detail that no map can depict. Aerial photography is, therefore, extremely useful both for specific site evaluation, for regional analysis,as well as for historical perspectives. It is used by engineers, architects, city and regional planners, geographers, geologists and historians. The Earth Sciences and Map Library has over 54,000 images covering California and other selected areas. The majority of photos are 9 x 9 inch contact prints with stereographic coverage. (Stereoscopes are available for patron use.) For some flights blackline enlargements or positive transparencies are available. The majority of photos are black-and-white images. A few recent flights are in color. In general scales vary from 1:40,000 to 1:2,400. Recently we have acquired aerial photography on CD-ROM. Historial coverage is available for some areas from 1931 to the present. Selected images from various flights are now available on line The Earth Sciences and Map Library has cumulative indexes for all of its aerial photography. An

Facility for Atmospheric Remote Sensing (FARS)
Since its inception, FARS has been applied to the regular study of high-level cirrus clouds in support of basic research and the satellite validation effort of Project FIRE through its Extended Time Observations (ETO) component. As of this time, more than 2,000 hours of ruby lidar ETO data from high level clouds has been collected from FARS: a subset of this unique observational data record intended for climatological and satellite research, with explanations, is provided in the FARS on-line dataset section below. Current support for FARS observations comes from NSF and NASA for basic cirrus cloud and FIRE ETO satellite studies, the NASA Atmospheric Effects of Aviation Project for aircraft contrail/cirrus research, and the DOE ARM program for multiple remote sensor cloud retrieval algorithm development. Data from FARS and the field campaigns also support our cloud microphysical and radiative transfer modeling research components at the Department of Meteorology.

A RE MOTE S ENSING SYSTEM FOR MAPPING SUBMERGED VEGETATION FOR CO ASTAL ZONE MAN AGEMENT Funded by LIFE , project No. 95 / DK / 110 / MLTRG The aim of RESCOMAN was to develop a robust, operational and cost-efficient remote sensing system for mapping submerged vegetation as a means of assessing the environmental quality of coastal waters. The main issue of Rescoman has been to elaborate the methods to be used in operational mapping of submerged vegetation based on especially airborne camera and scanners. An important issue has als o been to evaluate the parameters governing the distribution of submerged vegetation in order to suggest suitable supporting parameters for the classification of remotely sensed images. The Snow Hydrology Research Group (SHRG) is part of the Donald Bren School of Environmental Science and Management at the University of California, Santa Barbara . SHRG is also a member of the ESIP Federation (Earth Science Information Partners). The primary research focus of this group is NASA's REASoN (Research, Education and Applications Solutions Network) investigation called "Multi-Resolution Snow Products for the Hydrologic Sciences." The group also works on problems of snow metamorphism, snow-climate interactions, and snowmelt runoff. Much of this work is conducted at the Environmental Information Laboratory within the Donald Bren School.
