LANDSAT 7 ETM+, Path 110/78, 20 February 2002 The Landsat image above features Shoemaker Crater, Lake Teague, Western Australia. The Shoemaker impact structure is located in the central part of Western Australia near the town of Wiluna. The crater is about 30 kilometres in diameter and contains seasonal lakes that produce salt deposits as they evaporate during the dry season. It is approximately 1.7 billion years old and is regarded as Australia's oldest known impact structure.

About Remote Sensing
What is remote sensing?
Remote sensing is the observation of an object from a distance. Examples are Aerial Photography and the use of satellites to observe the Earth.
What is satellite remote sensing?
Satellite remote sensing involves gathering information about features on the Earth's surface from orbiting satellites. These satellites carry two types of sensor systems known as "active" and "passive". A "passive" system generally consists of an array of small sensors or detectors which record (as digital numbers) the amount of electro-magnetic radiation reflected and/or emitted from the Earth's surface. A multispectral scanner is an example of a passive system. An "active" system propagates its own electro-magnetic radiation and measures (as digital numbers) the intensity of the return signal. Synthetic Aperture Radar (SAR) is an example of an active system. The digital data acquired by the satellites is transmitted to ground stations and can be used to reconstitute an image of the Earth's surface not too dissimilar to an aerial photograph.

Waves Characteristics (Ocean / Lakes) Waves are generated on the surface of water (ocean/lakes) by wind. The wind transfers energy to the water, through friction between the air molecules and the water molecules. Waves of water do not move horizontally, they only move up and down (a wave does not represent a flow of water). Use this wave interactive to learn more on waves. What is remote sensing?
Remote sensing is the science and art of obtaining information about a phenomenoa without being in contact with it. Remote sensing deals with the detection and measurement of phenomena with devices sensitive to electromagnetic energy such as:
Light (cameras and scanners)
Heat (thermal scanners)
Radio Waves (radar)
How is remote sensing useful?
It provides a unique perspective from which to observe large regions.
Sensors can measure energy at wavelengths which are beyond the range of human vision (ultra-violet, infrared, microwave).
Global monitoring is possible from nearly any site on earth.
