The Climate and Radiation Branch at NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center supports a key NASA mission, namely, to understand and protect our home planet. We seek a better understanding of Earth's climate on all time scales, from daily, seasonal and interannual variability through changes on geologic time scales. Our research focuses on atmospheric measurement, numerical modeling, and climate analysis. We investigate atmospheric radiation, both as a driver for climate change and as a tool for the remote sensing of Earth's atmosphere and surface. The Branch research program seeks to better understand how our planet reached its present state, and how it may respond to future drivers, both natural and anthropogenic. A "Neil Armstrong" Footprint in the Middle of Somewhere: Moon? Desert?
May 23, 2004 Climate and Radiation research? Indeed, it does... The photograph and measurements were taken in an aged-desert area (The Great Gobi) surrounding the Dunhuang Oasis, China, during the ACE-Asia field experiment in 2001. In this particular case the undisturbed surface is covered by small dark-colored gravel that acts as a shield suppressing external forcing of wind blowing. However, if the surface is disturbed by footprints, the fine sand from underneath is exposed freely, and consequently can be blown by the wind and transported long distances. An example of such long-range transport was documented by TOMS' aerosol measurements (Hsu et al.

Overview
Earth observation from space has provided mankind and its decision makers with new global perspective of its environment. Protection of the environment will certainly be one of the great challenges in the 21st century. Remote sensing data gathered from airborne and spaceborne sensor systems are one of the starting points to preparing tools for gaining a better understanding of the complex interactions between the atmosphere, oceans, ice regions and land surfaces on one hand and the population with its various activities on the other hand. The Remote Sensing Division was formed in the late fifties, starting with the interpretation of aerial photography. As soon as new sensor systems such as thermal IR, multispectral scanners, airborne SLAR etc became available for civil purposes, they were systematically evaluated for its geographical applications. With the launch of ERTS-1 (Landsat 1) in 1972 the satellite era began, opening the scale to national, international and even global research activities. Accordingly digital classification techniques were initiated progressively, and solutions developed for difficult conditions, be it for mountainous alpine terrain or for operational uses in developing countries. Main emphasis has always been placed on the multitemporal aspects, on monitoring seasonal and long-term changes, combining remote sensing with auxillary data sources.

Index of open source tools for WebGIS, CAD, and remote sensing.

The Future of GIS OpenSourceGIS.org Open Source GIS [Last update: 5/26/04 - TMRS, PloneMap, PgArc, MapJunction, Mapyrus, GISAR, GIS Knoppix added since 4/1/04 - 167 projects listed] This effort represents an attempt to build a complete index of Open Source / Free GIS related software projects. The effort has some way to go, especially for projects in languages other than English. The definition of GIS has been kept loose to encompass a broad range of projects which deal with spatial data. This effort stands on the sturdy shoulders of other projects, most notably OSRS FreeGIS.org Metalab Linux Archive , and Fresh Meat.net I work for ATS, Inc , an independent GIS firm based in Lancaster, Pennsylvania with a strong reputation in the GIS industry. Our specialties include requirement studies, system designs, and application development using open and closed tools for desktop, web-based, and hybrid GIS systems. Descriptive text gathered from the project site is in quotes. Almost all of these projects fit the definition of Open Source Software as defined by the Open Source Initiative , and most of them fit the stricter definition of Free Software as defined by the Free Software Foundation ArcView APR Parser "Work with ArcView leads to large directories with numerous files consisting of many projects and tables and views, etc. Due to the complexity of the directories, it is impossible to see all the links between these tables, themes. A database containing all of the relevant information would help in locating data and reduce the searching time." [ License:

Graphic by: Steven E. Hall Radars have an important role in the field of meteorology. These devices send out and receive signals providing valuable information about the location and intensity of precipitation. Advanced Doppler radar technology goes beyond simple detection to providing high resolution reflectivity and estimated velocity data, which is vital to short term forecasting and severe weather prediction. The purpose of this module is to introduce the basics of radar meteorology, features of WSR-88D and MDR radar imagery, and how to interpret Doppler velocity patterns. The Radar Meteorology module has been organized into the following sections: Sections
