Mission Statement
The National Operational Hydrologic Remote Sensing Center (NOHRSC) provides remotely-sensed and modeled hydrology products for the coterminous U.S. and Alaska for the protection of life and property and the enhancement of the national economy. NOHRSC airborne, satellite, and modeled snow data and products are used by NWS, other government agencies, the private sector, and the public to support operational and research hydrology programs across the nation. The NOHRSC produces snow products and information that include estimates of: snow water equivalent, snow depth, snow pack temperatures, snow sublimation, snow evaporation, estimates of blowing snow, modeled and observed snow information, airborne snow data, satellite snow cover, historic snow data, and time-series for selected modeled snow products. CIESIN Thematic Guides
THE USE OF SATELLITE REMOTE SENSING
TO STUDY THE HUMAN DIMENSIONS OF GLOBAL ENVIRONMENTAL CHANGE
Welcome to the CIESIN guide on remote sensing. The purpose of this guide is to help you find selected key documents and data sets vital to understanding the use of satellite remote sensing to study the human dimensions of global environmental change. Satellite remote sensing technology and the science associated with evaluation of its data offer potentially valuable information for assisting human dimensions research studies. The human dimensions of global environmental change consist of the driving forces and the resultant actions of mankind capable of affecting the Earth system and its processes. From a fundamental perspective, the relevant types of human actions are those that have accompanied the historical development of civilization and technology, and that now are reaching epic proportions due to the continually expanding human population. In "A Framework for Research on the Human Dimensions of Global Environmental Change," Jacobson and Price (1990) group such actions into five major categories: 1) fossil fuel consumption; 2) biomass fuel consumption; 3) land use change; 4) agricultural activities; and 5) halocarbon production and release. Human actions involving biomass fuel consumption, land-use change, and agricultural activities all involve direct interaction with the global land surface. The extent of these interactions has prompted concern about the possible effects on the global physical, chemical, and biological systems. In particular, large-scale changes in land use at rates unprecedented in human history are provoking considerable concern. Land-use change is frequently accompanied by alterations or changes in land cover, which may possibly contribute to subsequent environmental change.

Development of remote sensing from the "ground up" will benefit everyone in the business. Currently, CARSTAD is in the form of a web site providing a wide-ranging source of information related to airborne remote sensing. Eventually CARSTAD is seen as a source of airborne remote sensing services. These will not be services that can be provided by commercial remote sensing organizations, but rather services that are not commercially available such as advanced technology and applications development, and specialized instrument characterization and calibration. Another important function of CARSTAD will be to serve as a model for other airborne remote sensing centers. Organizations wishing to establish a center could use the CARSTAD resources to pick the functions that they wish to implement. By fostering the development of airborne remote sensing centers

Detailed information regarding a multidisciplinary research project Applications of Geomatics for Long Term Regional Archaeological Settlement Pattern Analysis.
http://www.informatics.org/france/france.html
For over twenty years research has been conducted in the applications of remote sensing and GIS in the Burgundy region of France. This long term research project: "Applications of Geomatics for Long Term Regional Archaeological Settlement Pattern Analysis" is the work of Dr. Scott Madry of Informatics International, Inc . and the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Department of Anthropology (formerly of the Center for Remote Sensing and Spatial Analysis of Rutgers University and the International Space University of Strasbourg, France). This research program is one aspect of a larger on-going project in the study area that was originally conceived by Dr. Carole Crumley of the Department of Anthropology , University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, who has conducted research in the area for over 20 years. It involves the assistance and collaboration of several different researchers, former students, and others from different institutions. An American interdisciplinary team has conducted research in the Arroux River Valley region of Burgundy France ) for over two decades. The team uses an integrative approach termed
