  • over 60% of homes have a wet basement 1 in 3 homes have some molds and mildew, while over 2% have the toxic "black mold" 1 out of 6 homes have an elevated level of the cancer-causing radon gas.
Most basements start leaking water within 10 to 15 years. Efflorescence ("white powder") or a musty odor is the first sign of moisture problems. Finishing the basement traps water vapor seeping through the concrete, causing molds and musty odors. Damp basement air spreads molds and radon through the house. RadonSeal can save you thousands of dollars on home repairs - basement waterproofing concrete crack repair mold remediation , and radon mitigation . But prevention is always best! Seal your concrete and repair concrete cracks before problems develop and definitely, before covering or painting the concrete.

http://www.atral.com/U2381.html
SHORT PRIMER ON RADIOACTIVE DECAY URANIUM 238 (U238)
Atoms in a radioactive substance decay in a random fashion but at a characteristic rate. The length of time this takes, the number of steps required and the kinds of radiation released at each step are well known. The half-life is the time taken for half of the atoms of a radioactive substance to decay. Half-lives can range from less than a millionth of a second to millions of years depending on the element concerned. After one half-life the level of radioactivity of a substance is halved, after two half-lives it is reduced to one quarter, after three half-lives to one-eighth and so on. All uranium atoms are mildly radioactive. The type of radiation given off at each step and the 'half-life' of each step that U-238 goes through in its change into stable, non-radioactive lead-206. The shorter-lived each kind of atom, the more radioactive it is.
The Decay Chain of Radon: Radon originates from Uranium-238 which naturally occurs in most types of granite and soil in varying degrees. The following table for uranium-238 shows the various changes. As it undergoes radioactive decay, a chain of products is formed as a result of one by-product itself decaying to another element, which in turn decays further until finally reaching an element that is stable. In this case that stable element is Lead. The element we're interested in is Radon-222 (there is another form, Radon-218, but the half-life of this isotope is only a few hundredths of a second, so it is less of a problem). This is produced roughly halfway down this decay chain from Radium-226. Radon is a particular problem because it is a gas, and as such can leave the surrounding rock and enter buildings along with atmospheric air.

Boulder and Basin, Montana

S ome people say radon gas is bad for you. This radioactive gas, a natural byproduct from the earth, plagues real estate sales in most parts of the US. People living in basement rooms can almost see the hands of the atomic clock moving towards their personal zero hour. But there is a clear divergence of opinion about radon in the mountainous mine country between the towns of Boulder and Basin, Montana
A half-dozen defunct gold and uranium mines south of Helena, Montana, attract ailing tourists, who bask in radioactive radon gas and drink radioactive water to improve their health. Each summer, hundreds of people, many of them Amish and Mennonites, come to the radon health mines to relax and treat arthritis, lupus, asthma and other chronic cripplers. With colorful names like the Sunshine Health Mine Free Enterprise Earth Angel Radon Tunnel , and the Merry Widow , the mine shafts tout radon levels as much as 175 times the federal safety standard for houses. Yet, visitors claim miraculous recoveries and disease remissions in the damp, cool passages. Some have arrived in wheelchairs, then walked out on their own. The health mines opened in the early 1950's when little was understood about the health and hazard aspects of atomic radiation. One claim is that the gas stimulates the nerves and helps the human body heal itself.

Mission Statement:
To conduct activities that lead to the reduction of levels of radon in buildings such that radon levels in buildings are as free of radon as the ambient air outside of buildings The Tennessee Department of Environment and Conservation operates a statewide indoor radon abatement program as a part of the Division of Air Pollution Control. When the issue of radon first gained national attention in the early eighties, Tennessee immediately responded by establishing this statewide program. Originally, the function of the program was to educate, assist, and conduct outreach on the health hazard of radon and the various issues associated with that hazard. That was over fifteen years ago and the program's function has changed and expanded considerably. Today the radon program is still a statewide program. Outreach, education and assistance are still our primary functions. In addition, the program sponsors and conducts consistent and professional radon training in the areas of measurement, mitigation, schools testing and mitigation. It conducts scientific research on radon in Tennessee and how it relates to geology.

Radon
The Issue
Exposure to high levels of radon increases the risk of developing lung cancer. This correlation has prompted concern that radon levels in some Canadian homes may pose a health risk.
Background
Radon is a colourless, odourless, radioactive gas that occurs naturally in the environment. It comes from the natural breakdown of uranium, and can be found in high concentrations where soils and rocks contain uranium, granite, shale, or phosphate. Radon can also be found in soils contaminated with certain types of industrial wastes, such as the by-products of uranium or phosphate mining.
The Health Effects of Radon
In the open air, the amount of radon gas is so minimal that it does not pose a health risk. However, in confined spaces like mines radon gas can accumulate in relatively high levels and can become a health hazard. The only known health effect associated with exposure to high levels of radon is an increased risk of developing lung cancer. Because it is radioactive, radon decays. As it decays, it produces decay products, sometimes called "radon daughters" or "radon progeny." Two of these progeny, polonium-218 and polonium-214, decay rapidly themselves, and emit alpha particles. When alpha particles hit an object, the energy in them is absorbed by the surface of the object. Human skin is thick enough not to be affected, but if you breathe in alpha particles, they can damage bronchial and lung tissue, and can lead to lung cancer.

What is radon? Radon is a radioactive gas that has no smell, taste, or color. It comes from the natural decay of uranium that is found in nearly all rock and soil. When geologic conditions are favorable, the potential increases for high indoor levels of radon. If radon is natural, why is it a hazard? Outdoor radon levels never reach dangerous concentrations because air movement scatters radon into the atmosphere. Radon is a hazard in buildings because the gas collects in enclosed spaces. What conditions must be present for high indoor-radon levels? Four conditions must be present. The building must:
  • be built on ground that contains sufficient uranium.
  • have underlying soil that allows easy movement of radon.
  • have porous building materials, cracks, or other openings below the ground surface that allow radon from soil to enter the building.
  • have a lower air pressure inside than in the soil around the foundation.
