Radon is a colorless, odorless gas that emanates from the soil worldwide. It can concentrate in the home, and if breathed for a prolonged period of time, can cause lung cancer. In fact, the Surgeon General has warned that radon is the second leading cause of lung cancer in the United States today. Only smoking causes more lung cancer deaths.
EPA updates estimates of lung cancer risk from indoor radon. Click here for more information. [Posted 10/21/03]

DHS IAQ Unit, Mold, Asbestos The California Department of Health Service’s (DHS) Radon Program goals are to educate and increase the public awareness of the risks of radon in indoor air. The program promotes radon testing of homes, businesses, and schools. The program also works to identify areas with the potential for elevated levels of radon in indoor air due to geology, etc. The Program is responsible for listing individuals certified to perform radon services in California. What is Radon? Radon is a naturally occurring colorless, tasteless, and odorless gas that comes from the decay of uranium found in nearly all soils. It enters buildings byway of the ground through cracks and openings in the foundations. Once inside the radon can become trapped and unless the building is properly ventilated to remove the gas, it can become a health hazard. Long-term exposure to elevated levels of radon increase ones risk of contracting lung cancer. The levels of radon vary throughout the country and the concentrations entering homes varies from home to home.

Will this house make you sick?
Things you should know about your house and the environment
This publication is a reprint of a cooperative publication developed by the EPA, trade associations, and state and federal agencies representing the U.S. housing and home finance industry. It is in the public domain.
Introduction
Does this home fit my needs and those of my family? Is this a safe, secure home, free from potential hazards? Is this home a good investment and will it retain and increase its value in the years ahead? These are among the hundreds of questions that home buyers ask themselves as part of the home-buying thought process. It is good policy, this questioning, a means of gathering hard facts that can be used to balance the emotional feelings that are so much a part of buying a home. In ever-increasing numbers, home buyers today find it necessary to add new kinds of questions to their quest for information. Environmental concerns are becoming an element of the home-buying process. Although it is unrealistic to expect that any home that you are considering purchasing will be free of all forms of environmental influences, most homes (and the areas surrounding most homes) in the United States generally do not contain materials and substances that pose a health threat. However, in recent years, new concerns have been raised as our understanding of the natural environment has increased. Substances, such as radon gas and asbestos, have provoked new questions about how and where we build homes and manage their upkeep.

Uranium: The Deadliest Metal
by Dr. Gordon Edwards, President of CCNR
This article appeared in Perception magazine, v. 10 n. 2, 1992
TURN OFF BACKGROUND COLOR
Bombs and Radioactive Waste
Canada is the world's largest producer and exporter of uranium, yet most Canadians are entirely unaware of our involvement with this "deadliest of metals." There are only two commercially important uses for uranium: nuclear weapons and nuclear reactors. The ultimate products of the uranium industry are therefore bombs and radioactive wastes. For this reason alone, uranium merits classification as a deadly metal. But the lethal nature of uranium was manifested long before the first atomic bombs were built or the first nuclear reactors were fuelled. Dying for a Living As early as 1546, and for centuries afterwards, it was reported that underground miners in Schneeberg, Germany, suffered an unusually high incidence of fatal lung disease. In 1879, it was demonstrated both clinically and anatomically that about half of these miners were dying of lung cancer. This was a much higher incidence of lung cancer than that found in the general population. The same grim statistic 50 per cent mortality from lung cancer was later found among the miners in Joachimsthal, Czechoslovakia. The ores in question were particularly rich in uranium.

Radon Program Overview The DOH Radon Program is part of the Bureau of Facility Programs in the Division of Environmental Health. It was created by the State Legislature in 1988 to be a public resource for accurate information about radon, its health effects, how to test and how to fix radon problems. Our current legal description can be found on the Florida Legislatures web site in Florida Statute . A copy of our administrative code 64E-5 Parts X and XII (previously 10D-91) can be found in these pages. The Radon program was created with three primary missions:
  • To educate and inform the public about radon and its health effects. To protect the public from deceptive radon measurement and mitigation practices by certifying radon professionals To administrate the state mandatory radon testing program of all State licensed, regulated, owned or operated 24 hour care facilities, Public and private schools grades K through 12, and State licensed day care centers
  • The associated pages have a range of information from an overview of radon in Florida to ways of building to prevent radon entry . You will find a list of certified radon measurement and mitigation companies to provide you with radon related services or you may

Consequently, people are mainly exposed to radon through breathing air.
Background levels of radon in outside air are generally quite low, but in indoor locations radon levels in air may be higher. In homes, schools and buildings radon levels are increased because radon enters the buildings through cracks in the foundations and basements.
Some of the deep wells that supply us with drinking water may also contain radon. As a result a number of people may be exposed to radon through drinking water, as well as through breathing air.
Radon levels in groundwater are fairly high, but usually radon is quickly released into air as soon as the groundwater enters surface waters.
Exposure to high levels of radon through breathing air is known to cause lung diseases. When long-term exposure occurs radon increases the chances of developing lung cancer. Radon can only cause cancer after several years of exposure.

    Radon in Minnesota Homes
The Minnesota Department of Health (MDH) provides information on radon and how to protect your family's health. The U.S. Surgeon General, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and MDH recommend that every Minnesota home be tested for radon. Radon is not regulated in Minnesota, so it is up to homeowners to decide for themselves how much radon is acceptable in their home. The good new is, homeowners can act to lower the amount of radon in their home and reduce the risks to their family. On this page:

    Why is radon important?
Radon is the main source of ionizing radiation that most of us are exposed to. Ionizing radiation can harm the cells that make up our body's tissues and organs. The type of radiation that radon produces is mainly an internal hazard - it produces damage when it is gets into the body. The result of such damage is that radon causes cancer in humans.

    What is radon gas?
Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas. Radon has no color, odor or taste and results from the decay of uranium, which is a radioactive element found naturally in the earth’s crust. Over billions of years, uranium decays into radium, and eventually, radon. Unless you test for it, there is no way of knowing if radon is present in your home. RETURN TO CONTENTS
What are the health effects of exposure to radon in a home?
There are no known health effects connected with brief exposure to radon. However, over a lifetime, breathing air with too much radon increases a person’s risk of getting lung cancer. The risk is increased even more for a smoker exposed to radon. According to a report by the National Academy of Sciences, radon is estimated to cause between 15,000 and 22,000 lung cancer deaths per year. It is the second leading cause of lung cancer after smoking.
