Radon - Rn
General Information
Discovery
Radon was discovered by F.E. Dorn in 1900 in Halle, Germany, who named it radium emanation. The element was isolated in 1908 by Ramsay and Gray, who named it niton. Since 1923 it has been called radon.
Appearance
Radon is a colourless, odourless, chemically unreactive gas.
Source
Radon is produced naturally from the decay of a radium isotope, Ra.
Uses
Radon decays into radioactive polonium and alpha rays, and this emitted radiation made radon useful in early cancer therapy. The gas was sealed in minute tubes called seeds or needles, and implanted into the tumour. The diseased tissue was thus destroyed in situ by the radiation.
Biological Role Radon has no known biological role. It is toxic due to its radioactivity, the main hazard arising from inhalation, as the element and its radioactive daughters collect on dust particles. General Information Radon is the densest known gas.

109. Information On Radon From The Radiological Protection Institute Of Ireland
The Radiological Protection Institute of Ireland is the national organisation charged with monitoring exposure to radon in different areas of the country.
http://www.rpii.ie/radon/
Radon is a naturally occurring radioactive gas which originates from the decay of uranium in rocks and soils. It is colourless, odourless and tasteless and can only be measured using special equipment. When radon surfaces in the open air, it is quickly diluted to harmless concentrations, but when it enters an enclosed space, such as a house or other building, it can sometimes accumulate to unacceptably high concentrations. Radon decays to form tiny radioactive particles, some of which remain suspended in the air. When inhaled into the lungs these particles give a radiation dose which may damage cells in the lung and eventually lead to lung cancer. Radon concentration is measured in becquerels per cubic metre of air (Bq/m ). The becquerel is a unit of radioactivity and corresponds to one radioactive disintegration per second. The Reference Level for long-term exposure to radon in a house, above which the need for remedial action should be considered, is 200 Bq/m (determined in accordance with RPII's standard protocol ). Based on current knowledge it is estimated that in Ireland, for the population as a whole, a lifetime exposure (ie 70 yrs) to radon in the home at the Reference Level of 200 Bq/m

Radon, first discovered in 1910, is a colorless, odorless, radioactive gas formed from the radioactive decay of radium. Radium in turn is formed from uranium which is present to some extent in all rocks but is most common in those of granitic composition. It is not unusual for granites to contain as much as 3.9 parts per million uranium and .0013 parts per billion radium. When rocks weather, these radioactive elements find their way into the soil. Radon has a half-life of only 3.8 days; consequently, most of the gas decays harmlessly in the ground or atmosphere. Under certain circumstances, radon can migrate through the soil and enter homes in quantities sufficient to become a health hazard. In order for this to happen, there must be a source of radon, the soil must be permeable, and there must be a conduit into the home. The most common points of entry are porous basement walls, cracks in concrete floors or slabs, and openings around utility accesses. Certain home sites exhibit reasonably predictable radon problems. These are :
  • Homes built in areas where the rocks contain greater than normal amounts of uranium.

New study suggests radon threat may be overestimated

    January 4, 1999
Web posted at: 11:09 p.m. EST (0409 GMT) From Correspondent Dan Rutz NEW YORK (CNN) A new study into the effects of radon gas suggests its cause-and-effect relationship with lung cancer may be overestimated. Unlike dioxin and other natural pollutants, radon gas is released naturally into the environment when weak radioactive elements of rock and soil break down into minuscule airborne particles, which often seep into homes. "These particles can damage the cells in the lining of our lungs and produce lung cancer," said Dr. David Brenner of Columbia University. The Environmental Protection Agency has estimated that radon leads to 20,000 lung cancer deaths each year. But scientists are still uncertain how much radon over how long a period causes cancer. For years, much of the data available for making such estimates was based on information collected from uranium miners, who spent far more time underground and were exposed to much more radon than most people.

CANCER FACTS National Cancer Institute National Institutes of Health What is radon? Radon is a radioactive gas released from the decay of uranium in rocks and soil. It is an invisible, odorless, and tasteless gas that seeps up through the ground and diffuses into the air. In a few areas, depending on local geology, radon dissolves at high concentrations in ground water where it can then be released into the air when water is used. Out of doors, radon gas exists at harmless levels. However, in areas without adequate ventilation, such as underground mines, radon can accumulate to levels that substantially increase the risk of lung cancer. How does radon cause cancer?

Press Release Description The Safe Drinking Water Act directs the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) to regulate the quality of drinking water, including its concentration of radon, an acknowledged carcinogen. This book presents a valuable synthesis of information about the total inhalation and ingestion risks posed by radon in public drinking water, including comprehensive reviews of data on the transfer of radon from water to indoor air and on outdoor levels of radon in the United States. It also presents a new analysis of a biokinetic model developed to determine the risks posed by ingestion of radon and reviews inhalation risks and the carcinogenesis process. The volume includes scenarios for quantifying the reduction in health risk that might be achieved by a program to reduce public exposure to radon.
