The Division of Radiological Health is responsible for protecting Tennesseans and the environment from the hazards associated with ionizing radiation. This responsibility encompasses regulating the use and possession of radioactive materials and radiation producing machines within the state, as well as responding to accidents involving radiation. In addition, the Division monitors the environment for radiation, especially around nuclear facilities and other major radioactive material users. The Division is comprised of four sections as follows: The Licensing/Registration/Planning Section licenses medical, academic, and industrial facilities to possess x-ray equipment. A license is issued only upon demonstration by the applicant of the adequacy of required radiation protection programs to protect workers, the public, and the environment from any hazards of radiation presented by the proposed use of the radioactive material. See the Environmental Permitting Handbook for more information.

General Information
The Radiological Health Program is the local agency that enforces the state and federal radiation control regulations in San Diego County. Ionizing radiation has the potential to expose employees and the general public to harmful effects. The widespread use of radioactive materials and x-ray machines in health care, research, and industry has required a program to monitor and control radiation hazards. Radiological Health Specialists in San Diego County monitor the storage, use and disposal of radioactive materials and the safe use of x-ray producing equipment through a contract with the Radiological Health Branch of the State Department of Health Services.

Regulates standards designed to ensure that the exposure of Mississippians to harmful radiation is kept at a low level. Staff conduct inspections for federal x-ray compliance; medical and dental x-ray; radioactive material licenses; tanning facilities. Staff collect and analyze environmental samples in the vicinity of the Grand Gulf Nuclear Station and at the Salmon Test Site in Lamar County.
· · · Activities Samples such as milk from local dairies and samples from state licensees are analyzed for the presence of radioactivity. The staff analyzes water supplies for radioactivity and also participate in EPA's Water Supply Laboratory Certification Program, which consists of analyzing samples for radionuclides and gross alpha or gross beta radioactivity. The staff evaluates radon concentrations in Mississippi schools and governmental structures.

X-ray Mammography Tanning X-ray The Division of Electronic Products is responsible for regulating the use of sources of electronically produced radiation (x-rays). The regulatory activities consist of both a registration and an inspection/enforcement program. The Division regulates approximately 3,000 x-ray facilities with over 6,000 x-ray units throughout South Carolina. Prior to operating x-ray equipment, facilities must receive facility registration approval. This includes a review of their operating procedures, radiation protection program, and shielding design. The shielding design approval process requires a review of the architectural blueprint, an analysis of the type and number of x-rays performed, and a determination of the room and surrounding area occupancy rate.

Welcome to the Bureau of Radiological Health The Bureau of Radiological Health is responsible to assess, control and prevent exposure to radiation from both natural and man-made radioactive materials in NH. BRH functions to protect public health and safety, occupationally exposed persons, and the environment from unnecessary exposure to sources of radiation. BRH has three primary focus areas:
  • the regulation of radioactive materials and X-ray machines;
  • radiological emergency response; and
  • the Radon Program.
Under an Agreement with the federal Nuclear Regulatory Commission, BRH licenses all uses of radioactive material in NH. BRH also registers all radiation producing machines (x-ray) being used in NH. These licensees and registrants are inspected for compliance under the NH Rules for Control of Radiation. BRH responds to accidents and incidents involving radiation sources. A Radiological Emergency Response Team is available to respond to any accident situation having to do with Vermont Yankee Nuclear Power Plant, Seabrook Station or Portsmouth Naval Shipyard, and will assist with any transportation accident or local incident involving radiation. In addition, BRH performs continuous environmental monitoring around Vermont Yankee and Seabrook Station nuclear power plants and provides an ambient surveillance program for evaluation of local environmental radiation levels. BRH's radiochemistry laboratory collects environmental and regulatory samples for analyses and reporting.
