AMS radiocarbon dating now available at PRIME Lab.
David Elmore
PRIME Lab can now measure your radiocarbon samples to 1% precision for modern samples. The turn-around time is currently under 2 months. Remaining upgrades that are in progress (see below and page 4) will soon lower radiocarbon precision to better than 1% and will also improve capacity. World-wide, C is the most-measured nuclide by AMS and is measured by several larger accelerators such as ours. Since our initial funding was based primarily on the non- C nuclides for which the larger accelerator is needed, we have waited until we were measuring these nuclides routinely before offering radiocarbon measurements as a service to the Earth science community. Priority will remain with funded non- C samples. Our price per C analysis, to be announced soon on our web pages, will be competitive with other AMS labs. One basic price will include pretreatment, graphitization, AMS measurement, and an auxiliary d C measurement. Results are available on the web soon after the measurement. A precision of 1% (80 years) is guaranteed for modern samples. Background levels result in a limiting age of about 46,000 years. Since our facility is partly funded by the NSF Division of Earth Sciences, we offer half-price analyses for a limited number of samples for NSF-funded projects.

107. A Radiometric Dating Resource List
Large annotated directory of internet resources on radiocarbon and other radioactive dating methods, including creationists' views and scientific critiques of those views.
http://www.tim-thompson.com/radiometric.html
A Radiometric Dating Resource List The real heart of the age-of-the-earth debate (if "debate" is the right word) is always radiometric dating. There are lots of ways to guesstimate ages, and geologists knew the earth was old a long time ago (and I might add that they were mostly Christian creationist geologists). But they didn't know how old . Radiometric dating actually allows the measurement of absolute ages, and so it is deadly to the argument that the earth cannot be more than 10,000 years old. Radiometric methods measure the time elapsed since the particular radiometric clock was reset. Radiocarbon dating, which is probably best known in the general public, works only on things that were once alive and are now dead. It measures the time elapsed since death, but is limited in scale to no more than about 50,000 years ago. Other methods, such as Uranium/Lead, Potassium/Argon, Argon/Argon and others, are able to measure much longer time periods, and are not restricted to things that were once alive. Generally applied to igneous rocks (those of volcanic origin), they measure the time since the molten rock solidified. If that happens to be longer than 10,000 years, then the idea of a young-Earth is called into question. If that happens to be billions of years, then the young-Earth is in big trouble. In 1984, I was on a geological excursion in Mägenwil (Switzerland). I collected some sandstone samples with fossilized mussels in it. This rock is classified as belonging to the Upper Tertiary geological system. Evolutionary belief therefore maintains that this rock is around 20 million years old. In the same rock, right alongside the fossil mussels, are fragments of coalified wood. That means the wood must also be at least that old. Mainstream geologists would never think of trying to get a radiocarbon ( C) date for the coalified wood in this Mägenwil sandstone, because anything that old should not be datable by this method.

A Brief Introduction to the OCR Procedure for Dating Archaeological Features
The biological recycling of organic carbon is fundamental to nearly all biological systems on this planet. While some forms of organic carbon, such as fresh organic matter, are quickly recycled, other more resistant forms, such as humus and charcoal, are recycled at a much slower rate. The effect of the biochemical degradation of charcoal and soil humic material can be measured by the ratio of the total carbon to the readily oxidizable carbon in the sample. This ratio is called the O xidizable C arbon R atio, or OCR . The rate of biochemical degradation of the relatively stable forms of organic matter varies within the specific physical and environmental contexts of the sample. To determine an age for the carbon sample, a systems formula was designed to account for the biological influences of oxygen, moisture, temperature, and the media's (soil) reactivity. These variables are measured by soil texture, depth below the soil surface, the site specific mean annual temperature and rainfall, and the soil pH. Residual influences on this system are included through a statistically derived constant.
