Shrum SC-B Rm. B7249 hope@sfu.ca
Sharon Hope attended SFU 1967/8, then completed the Biochemical Technology program at the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology. She worked for the SFU Chemistry Department as a biochemistry teaching lab technician from 1970-72 and 1975-90,and spent 2 years teaching in Nigeria (1973-74). Sharon joined Biological Sciences in 1990 as our Radionuclide Technician. Please contact her or visit the facility for matters pertaining to radioisotopes and services. RADIONUCLIDE FACILITY The Biological Sciences Radionuclide Facility is located in Shrum Rm. 7249. This facility deals with the receiving, distribution and waste handling of radioactive materials for the entire campus. It also provides support in setting up laboratories for the safe use of radioactive materials. Instruments used for the detection and analysis of radioactivity are housed and maintained here. There are three liquid scintillation counters, a gamma counter, and a biological oxidizer available for use by research and teaching. Ordering information for radionuclides is also available here. The Radiation Safety Office and the University Radiation Safety Committee also provide support to radiation users on campus. New faculty who need to use radioisotopes in their research need a permit and application forms to obtain one are available by following the link below. SFU is granted a license by the Canadian Nuclear Safety Commission (CNSC) and the Radiation Safety Office issues permits according to the conditions outlined by the CNSC. For more information regarding the use of radioactive materials at SFU please visit:

Background briefing for reporters and editors on USDOE / Bush Administration decision to make Hanford a National Radioactive Waste Dump: April 28, 2004

Radioactive and toxic wastes are already moving towards the Columbia River. Over a million gallons have leaked from the High-Level Nuclear Waste tanks at Hanford. The U.S. Dept. of Energy plans to ship 70,000 Truckloads of Radioactive Waste to Hanford.
, being stuck in traffic next to one shipment is equivalent to multiple full body x-rays per hour. Hanford is already the most contaminated nuclear site in the Western hemisphere.
The U.S. Dept. of Energy continues to add more waste to unlined burial grounds that are releasing carcinogenic and poisonous chemicals.

For more information or reports on the risks from Hanford becoming a National Radioactive Waste Dump, visit Heart of America Northwest.

165. NC WARN
NC WARN is a memberbased nonprofit helping to protect communities and the general public from the increasing health damage associated with toxic and radioactive pollution.
http://www.ncwarn.org/
is a grassroots organization using science and activism to reduce hazards to public health and the environment from industrial and radioactive pollution. High-level nuclear waste will be stored at North Carolina nuclear plants for decades. NC WARN is advocating safer storage methods that reduce the risk of a catastrophic fire from accident or attack. The Shearon Harris plant in Wake County has the nation's largest waste cooling pools. Also, a series of reactor emergencies have made Harris one of the nation's most troubled nuclear plants. Pilot Testing
. Since 1987, TD*X has performed hundreds of pilot studies on treatment of hazardous chemical and PCB contaminated soil, sludge, sediment, filter cake and debris. Dioxins and their precursors, as well as mercury contaminated materials are often the subjects of our testing projects. We operate a fully permitted pilot test lab and can perform pilot and bench scale treatability studies as part of the remedy selection phase of soil remediation projects. We also test customer samples from hazardous waste generators to identify lower cost treatment options than current methods, such as incineration or landfilling. We can also perform these treatability studies on radioactive materials, even those that are contaminated by the sameabove mentioned hazardous chemicals and PCBs (i.e.. mixed wastes). Technologies that can be tested include: thermal desorption, drying, base catalyzed decomposition, PCB chemical dechlorination, and others.
