Doelling; 2) Evidence for Quaternary deformation in the Salt Valley anticline, southeastern Utah, by C.G. Oviatt; 3) Late Cenozoic gravity tectonic deformation related to the Paradox salts in the Canyonlands area of Utah, by P.W. Huntoon The paper by Doelling studies one of the salt anticlinal structures in the Paradox basin; stratigraphy and structure are discussed with examples of how salt has been involved in shaping the landscape. Oviatt presents evidence that Quaternary structures have been folded, faulted, and otherwise deformed. He identifies datable ash beds involved in the deformation and indicates that dissolution and diapirism may still be active in the Salt Valley region. Huntoon discusses deformation mechanisms in the rocks overlying the salt: salt flowage, salt dissolution, and gliding of the rocks above the salt. He believes these processes became active due to the erosion of the Colorado River and its tributaries and they continue today.

Geology Home Page Quaternary Studies I am Co-Director of two recently funded University initiatives to spur interdisciplinary research efforts on campus (Centers for Interdisciplinary Study of Global Change and Archeometry/ Geochronology). The former builds research ties between faculty in Geology, Geography and Ecology; the latter ties faculty in Geology, Anthropology and History. New projects related to global change examine tropical Quaternary climate change preserved in high elevation lake sediments in Costa Rica (in collaboration with Dr. Sally Horn, Geography, isotopic evidence for prehistoric forest clearance and maize cultivation in lowland Costa Rica (with Dr. Horn), and (my current favorite!) the isotopic/dendrochronological record of hurricanes and other studies examining the potential use of oxygen isotopes in tree ring cellulose as a proxy for climate (with Dr. Henri Grissino-Mayer, Geography). With my Research Associate, Dr. ZhengHua Li, I have extended my program to examine high resolution studies of Quaternary climate and ecological shifts across the Chinese Loess plateau. The Archeometry/Geochronology effort (Dr. Jan Simek, Anthropology, Co-PI) has recently completed a lab for 14C dating, including the capability of producing graphite targets for off-site AMS dating. The lab was built with direct support and consultation by Dr. Jack Liu at the Illinois Geological Survey.

Academics Activities Applications People ... Paleoenvironmental Research Group A Quaternary Sediments Laboratory is in development in the Geology Department at USF. Magnetic susceptibility equipment is available for field and laboratory measurement of susceptibility behavior in sediments, which can be used to infer various depositional and post-depositional processes. Efforts are underway to acquire instruments for automated particle size analysis, inorganic and organic carbon and sulfur analysis. Through links with the Coastal Research Lab (Dr. Richard Davis) and the Marine Science Department, facilities are available for a variety of sedimentological analyses. A new X-ray diffraction instrument has been acquired and is shared between the Geology and Chemistry Departments. Elemental analyses can be done in Dr. Jeff Ryan's DCP analytical geochemistry lab.
