The IGTC was established in 1998 in the Department of Epidemiology at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School for Public Health , with core funding from SmithKline Beecham Consumer Healthcare. The idea for the Institute grew out of collaborative research projects in China which conducted studies on the rising use of tobacco among young people, adult smoking cessation behavior, and determined salivary cotinine levels of smokers. (1996 Survey Results) The Institute has expanded to include a broad range of research projects, strong education and training programs, is leading the development of new strategies to evaluate tobacco control interventions, and actively supports the development of national plans and policy development. Currently, the Institute receives funding from many different funding sources, including the federal government, private foundations, professional associations and private industry.
