Computer and Cyberspace Addiction
A heated debate is rising among psychologists. With the explosion of excitement about the internet, some people seem to be a bit too excited. Some people spend way too much time there. Is this yet ANOTHER type of addiction that has invaded the human psyche? This article is
offered for CE credit.
Click here for information Perhaps, on a broad level, it makes sense to talk about a "Cyberspace Addiction" - an addiction to virtual realms of experience created through computer engineering. Within this broad category, there may be subtypes with distinct differences. A teenager who plays hooky from school in order to master the next level of Donkey Kong may be a very different person than the middle aged housewife who spends $500 a month in AOL chat rooms - who in turn may be very different from the businessman who can't tear himself away from his finance programs and continuous internet access to stock quotes. Some cyberspace addictions are game and competition oriented, some fulfill more social needs, some simply may be an extension of workaholicism. Then again, these differences may be superficial. Nevertheless, some people are definitely hurting themselves by their addiction to computers and cyberspace. When people lose their jobs, or flunk out of school, or are divorced by their spouses because they cannot resist devoting all of their time to virtual lands, they are pathologically addicted. These extreme cases are clear cut. But as in all addictions, the problem is where to draw the line between "normal" enthusiasm and "abnormal" preoccupation.

SOCIAL psychology. Though this page was created as a companion piece for this work, its links should complement most social psychology courses.

S OCIAL P SYCHOLOGY
The social sciences are dedicated to understanding the human condition, ideally to the extent that the singular and collective behaviors of human beings can be understood and even predicted. Though their goals are identical in the abstract, these "sciences" differ in terms of their way of looking at things, the questions they ask, the methods they use in addressing these questions, and what they do with this information once they obtain it. Amid this multitude of social science disciplines is social psychology which, as can be inferred from its label, involves the ways in which both social and mental processes determine action. What, precisely, this means research-wise, however, remains a matter of historic debate both between and within the disciplines of psychology and sociology. What weight is to be given to the social, the psychological, and the interaction between the two? What does the interaction between psychological and sociological processes even mean? I n approaching the problem of why some people do certain things

NEW VIDEO - Brief therapy for depression Radical Psychology Television makes programmes exploring new organising ideas in psychology, particularly those that help improve our understanding of why the human brain and behaviour evolved the way they did and that have practical implications for medicine and psychotherapy The huge variety of mind found in humanity are the sum result of the way our genetic inheritance – the human givens (expressed as physical and emotional needs) – have interacted with the environment. NEW - from the journal
Human givens
Mental health is the result of our emotional and physical needs being met well – using the resources nature gave us. When they are not met well, for whatever reason, individuals and families experience stress overload with an increase in various expressions of emotional arousal – anger, anxiety, trauma, depression, greed and addiction. This can lead, in turn, to illness and social problems that impact on the whole of society. Improving our understanding of the new information around these issues, and how to help people cope better with the pressures of the modern world, are the aims behind these videos of seminars, therapy sessions and explanatory documentaries. available now in production now coming soon who are we ... the journal

140. Association For Transpersonal Psychology
Today, a more comprehensive view of human nature is developing. It recognizes our personal uniqueness, as well as a transpersonal dimension, something which is beyond our individual egos, and yet still a part of us. Based on observations and practices from many cultures, the transpersonal perspective is informed by modern psychology, the humanities and human sciences, as well as contemporary spiritual disciplines and the wisdom traditions.
http://www.atpweb.org/
Welcome to ATP. On these pages you will find resources and information that will help you to understand Transpersonal Psychology and the transpersonal perspective. We hope to make this site an valuable resource for scholars, practitioners, and the public. It will be updated regularly, so stop back often. Transpersonal Psychology is a relatively new field of study. It combines insights from modern psychology with those drawn from traditional spiritual practices, both Eastern and Western. The antecedents of Transpersonal Psychology can be found in Eastern spiritual traditions, such as Buddhist, Sufi, Taoist, and Vedanta traditions; in spiritual practices of the monks and saints from the Catholic and Eastern Orthodox religions; in the American Transcendentalist movement, represented by Emerson, Thoreau, and the religious democracy of the Quakers and other early American Protestant denominations; and in the pioneers of modern cross-cultural psychology and psychology of religion, Carl Jung and William James. Transpersonal Psychology was formally founded as a distinct perspective in psychology by Abraham Maslow and Anthony Sutich in 1969 with the publication of the Journal of Transpersonal Psychology.
