Buddhist Psychology
First printed in Psybernetica , Winter, 1996 Eastern influence on Western thought goes back at least to the time of the ancient Greeks and Romans. Alexander the Great
th century B.C.E.) made it as far as northern India, and the Roman philosopher Plotinus made a trip to study the philosophies of the region in 242 C.E.. According to Hall and Lindzey (1978 p. 350), he may have subsequently been an influence on Christian mystics, such as Meister Eckhart and St. John of the Cross. However, it is important to note that the phenomenological emphases of much of Eastern philosophies are such that, if true, we should also expect culturally distinct expressions of the same phenomenon to arise independently. The primary cultural difference seems to be whether or not the experience of the individual is legitimized by the society in which the individual lives or if expression of that experience is considered heresy, as was the case in the West with Christian mystics. While this influence may have been present so far back, it was not until the time of the Theosophical movement in the 19

Scientific research is a public venture. Therefore, one of the essential skills of the scientist is to be able to communicate ideas and research results effectively. This hypertext guide is an attempt to make the style of writing used in the field of psychology clear to you. It summarizes a lot of the material available in the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association (5-th edition) (2001) and is oriented toward undergraduate students. For example, it includes numerous hints to avoid common mistakes students make. Note the examples appear in a teletype font to distinguish them from the normal text. Finally, the document is organized in an outline format for at least two reasons. First, it should make it easier for students to quickly locate the information they seek. Second, it should make it easier for an instructor to grade students papers. In most cases, the student can simply be referred to the outline item that addresses the problem rather than writing the comment repeatedly on multiple papers. Note that a checklist version of this writing guide is available.

HISTORY OF PSYCHOLOGY COLLECTION
BARNARD COLLEGE - COLUMBIA UNIVERSITY New York City, NY 10027 Thomas Perera Ph. D.: Historian / Museum Curator Larry Heuer Ph. D.: Psychology Department Chair This collection is dedicated to the preservation of the history and apparatus from the early days of the Barnard College Psychology Department. Barnard College, a four-year women's college, was founded in 1889 and the first courses in psychology were offered in 1906 over the strenuous objections of many faculty and administrators who maintained that psychology was not a fitting topic for young women. We have digitized the documents and apparatus which have been stored in the departmental archives for nearly 100 years and placed them on the internet in a form that makes them accessible to historians and students. This museum was created in 1995 and, as time permits, more of this information will be digitized and made available.
In this photograph, Harry L. Hollingworth, founder of the Barnard College Psychology Department, demonstrates the operation of the Hipp Chronoscope at the opening of the Hollingworth Laboratories.

General Philosophy (Wittgenstein, Dretske, Nagarjuna, Heidegger, and others.) Films and Popular Culture (Film reviews, principles of criticism, and other resources.) One of the principal claims of this site is that mental images exist on a continuum of modalities: from instances that may be described as clearly due to physical causes to those that seem to have only mental causes. The diagram below suggests this continuum, indicating several types of images. The properties of mental images change according to their type. The more we move in the direction of mental causation, the more involved images seem to be with language, and the less important their visual properties become. For example, the deduction (depicted below) "B is taller than A is taller than C, so B is taller than C"

54. Introducing Indian Psychology: The Basics
Basic principles and concepts of a modern approach to Indian academic psychology based on the ancient Vedic Lore and the teachings of Sri Aurobindo Ghosh.
http://www.infinityfoundation.com/mandala/i_es/i_es_corne_psych.htm
Introducing Indian psychology: the basics
By Matthijs Cornelissen, Sri Aurobindo Ashram, Pondicherry
The foundations of academic and Indian psychology
svadharma one could say, is to be the science of the soul, the science of our inner being, the science of consciousness. To develop such an inner science is certainly not easy, but to coolly redefine psychology as the science of behaviour is a kind of coup d'etat for which there is no good excuse. As I hope to show, Indian psychology has followed a more fruitful path by concentrating its efforts on the development of solid and extremely well worked-out procedures to improve the quality and reliability of subjective knowledge. It has been helped in this endeavour by the fact that it could build on a for this purpose much more suitable basic philosophy. During the long history of the Indian civilization there have been, no doubt, materialist or agnostic schools, but the vast majority of Indian thinkers takes consciousness, rather than matter as the basis of reality. Across the spectrum of the various schools, the nature of the ultimate reality is described as Sachchidananda , an indissoluble unity of absolute existence, consciousness, and joy. It is out of this absolute consciousness, existence, and joy that the physical world comes into manifestation as just one type of world among many others. Sri Aurobindo describes this as a process of exclusive concentration, comparable to that of a man fully engrossed in his work: he forgets the surrounding; he forgets who he is; for all outer appearances, he becomes the work in which he is involved. Through a similar process, the Absolute One condenses itself into the multitude of lesser forms of consciousness that we know, for example, as the mentality of humankind or the apparent nescience of matter.

We want our cats to leave some things alone. Ideal "cat persuasion" gives the cat a change of heart, does not harm the cat, and does not cause the cat to be afraid of us.
These hints can help your cat believe that the scowl of the Cat Behavior Gods , not you, takes the fun out of certain things. For instance, the cranky Cat Gods:
  • made the plant taste terrible (Bitter Apple)
  • rained on their parade if they scratch furniture (spray bottle with water
  • made a ruckus if they try to go outside (tin can with pebbles)
  • made the sofa smell terrible (Cat Away spray or vinegar) and the scratching post smell great (rub catnip on it)
...and you just confirm these signs from the Cat Gods with a firm "NO!" Praise costs nothing, pleases your pet, makes you smile, and reinforces good behavior. More Cat Stuff Back to CAWS Home Page Graciously Hosted by ViaWest Internet Services, www.viawest.net
