I'm a research associate professor at the Naval Postgraduate School in Monterey California. I came here in 1994 on a National Research Council Post-Doctoral Fellowship which was extended for three years, after which I joined the Department of Aeronautics and Astronautics research faculty. I have many interests, which are discussed in some detail in these pages. These include many aspects of aerospace engineering. I'm involved in both numerical simulations and experimental investigations of primarily unsteady flows. Present research projects include everything from full-configuration, three-dimensional simulations of transonic fighter aircraft, to the design and testing of flapping-wing propelled micro unmanned air vehicles (referred to as micro-UAVs or MAVs). You can find information, photos and videos of our radio-controlled MAVs in my experimental research section. You'll find summaries of my research efforts in my

Special Studies Program
Laser Propulsion
The Special Studies Program (within ATP) has examined alternative spacecraft propulsion concepts to meet performance or mission objectives. Laser propulsion concepts have been described for several decades. The laser beam is used to heat a propellant with the energetic expansion driving the craft. A series of ATP devised tests were conducted in which a laser beam was directed at a pusher plate with machined paraboloid dimples. Light was focused by each dimple on a spot behind the plate. The focused beam heated air pockets and the expanding pockets imparted a thrust to the plate. This concept provides respectable thrust in the atmosphere. In space (vacuum) the dimpled plate is jettisoned to expose a block of solid propellant which is ablated by the laser beam to produce thrust. Propulsion
Once the main technological obstacles to be overcome to make space exploration a reality (in the early days of the space program few were confident that man would ever develop a booster capable of propelling a human being into Earth orbit, much less to get him to the Moon), the propulsion system to be utilized becomes once more a major determinant in a manned mission to Mars. The enormous distances involved, the need to reduce the mission duration as much as possible for medical reasons, the weight constraints imposed by the existence of a manned crew and its life support system all make this choice a crucial one, a "go-no go" decision in terms of design.

The BPL philosophy is simple: No one should be forced to pay L.A., New York, or Nashville studio rates for superb recording quality - nor should you pay reasonable rates only to record in a bedroom studio (or in a real studio only to end up with a recording that sounds like it was recorded in a bedroom). We don’t hit you with hidden costs (you don’t pay extra for the good gear , and you are welcome to use all of the guitars and amps, drums, keys, etc.), and you'll work with people who actually care about your end results. Give us a call and we can discuss your individual recording needs. Our rates are highly competitive, and we offer further discounts for multiple sessions.
