Computer aided field editing in the DHS context: The Turkey experiment (p. 3-14) In this study two types of field editing used during the Turkey Demographic and Health Survey are compared: computer aided field and manual editing. It is known that manual editing by field editors is a tedious job in which errors especially on skip questions can be missed, however with the aid of computers field editors could quickly find all occasions on which an interviewer incorrectly followed a skip instruction. At the end of the experiment it has been found out that the field editing done with the aid of a notebook computer was consistently better than that done in the standard manual manner. MRC funded research has shown that the injection of a simple and affordable anti-convulsant drug could halve the risk of a major pregnancy complication that accounts for the deaths of over 50,000 mothers and unborn babies a year worldwide. The trial is a step forward in the prevention of eclamptic seizures, which remain a major killer of mothers and babies, especially in developing countries, where full blown eclampsia is more common. Even in the developed world pre-eclampsia and eclampsia are major causes of maternal death, prematurity and stillbirth. For example in the UK, where eclampsia only affects one pregnant woman in 2,000, pre-eclampsia and eclampsia are responsible for 15 percent of maternal deaths. Because the conditions are poorly understood by scientists and doctors they have, until now, been difficult to treat and are, as yet, impossible to prevent. people and places

    Research:
Our research into the early programming of chronic disease offers the prospect of novel strategies to prevent cardiovascular disease, type 2 diabetes and osteoporosis by improving fetal and infant nutrition. Sufficient is now known to implement policies which improve fetal growth by protecting the nutrition and growth of girls and young women, with emphasis on the avoidance of obesity or excessive thinness, and access to a balanced diet. Protection of infant nutrition and growth, and prevention of rapid weight gain in childhood, are also important.

  • We need to know more about the way in which programmed changes in physiology and metabolism alter susceptibility to adverse influences such as obesity, high-energy diets and poor living conditions in childhood and adult life. We are addressing this in studies based on population samples totalling 150,000 people in Britain ( Hertfordshire Sheffield Motherwell Finland ... India and China We need to understand how a mother’s body composition and diet influence the development of risk factors in her offspring. We have shown that the offspring of mothers who are thin or overweight are at increased risk of cardiovascular disease and type 2 diabetes. Maternal thinness is linked to insulin resistance in the offspring, while the offspring of overweight mothers tend to be insulin-deficient.The effect of mother’s body composition and glucose insulin regulation on the offspring’s growth and metabolism has been studied in

Integrating Environmental and Population Variation: A Model for Biodiversity Studies (AMBIOS)
    Areas of study:
  • The relationships between breeding ecology, niche width and biogeographic range, and their bearing on the future dynamics of biodiversity at a time of accelerating environmental change and extinction will be studied.
  • The development of operational concepts for assessing and describing the very basis of biodiversity will be established This will involve evaluating and comparing phenotypic and genotypic features as measures of the buffering capacity of the components of biodiversity with respect to changing environmental factors, and will be achieved by focusing on genetic heterogeneity levels and phenotypic responses in relation to the environment, and on thermal tolerance.
  • The determination of the mechanisms involved in the transition from polymorphic, interbreeding populations to those of species status, and the elucidation of how such changes can be distinguished from phenotypic plasticity, will be addressed.
  • Techniques for the identification of species and 'lower' taxonomic units will be developed, and new molecular methods tested in those species in which the levels of polymorphism are high.

Health Policy Institute About the Center The Center on an Aging Society at Georgetown University is a Washington-based, non-partisan public policy institute that fosters critical thinking about the implications of an aging society. The Center studies the impact of demographic changes on public and private institutions and families of all ages. To encourage innovative and responsible thinking, the Center conducts and synthesizes research on a broad range of topics related to income and health security and conveys the findings to policy makers. Thus, the Center serves as a source of information on issues often associated with the Social Security, Medicare, and Medicaid programs. Particular topics that have been the focus of Center projects also include labor market changes, employer-provided health and pension benefits, the health care market, health literacy, and access to health and long-term care. The Center conveys information to the media, business leaders, members of Congress and their staff, and to other public policy analysts using a variety of formats including:
    • Business and community discussion groups
    • Conferences and briefings
    • Reports, fact sheets, and policy briefs

    Welcome!
T his site is dedicated to the advancement of fine-scale population-level genetic analyses in natural populations, especially birds. My primary research interests concern the development of new molecular (especially AFLP) and analytical techniques to characterize genetic variation in spatially structured populations of lekking Neotropical birds. Although I am most interested in how dispersal barriers affect the genetic composition of White-bearded Manakins (family Pipridae) and various hummingbirds (family Trochilidae), I share some time investigating genetic processes in Combtooth Blennies (family Blenniidae) and Drosophila melanogaster . My motivation in creating this site was to provide a resource that would make available many of the protocols and tools I developed for my dissertation research. Although most of the information contained herein is referenced primarily to birds, I hope that other investigators will find this information useful in their own research. UPDATE!

Welcome! Understanding how and why some forests are fragmented, degraded, and losing species, while other forests are in good condition and even regrowing and expanding, is a puzzle to any thoughtful observer of the environment. In a world which is experiencing unprecedented degrees of environmental change and degradation at a global scale, one sees evidence of restoration, suggesting that under certain conditions, people can self-organize and stem the steady loss of the ecological systems that sustain us. At the Center for the Study of Institutions, Population, and Environmental Change (CIPEC) we are dedicated to understanding these processes and sharing this knowledge with the scientific community and the public. PLANT ECOLOGY IN A CHANGING WORLD

We have a great impact on our natural environment, whether it is through logging, agriculture, cattle grazing, harvesting natural products such as flowers or fruits, or through the emission of gasses and pollutants. As a result the world is losing its plant species at an unprecedented rate. Plant ecology is a vital tool to address these alarming developments. As a plant ecology research group we therefore address the following questions: What are the mechanisms underlying biological diversity, why does one ecosystem have more species than another? How can diversity be conserved, and if it is lost, can it be restored? How can we live in proximity of and use our natural environment in a sustainable way? Answering these questions does not only require an idealistic mind but also a fundamental understanding of how individual plants grow, the dynamics of plant populations, and the functioning of ecosystems.
