LSHTM Welcome to CeLSIUS Welcome to the website of CeLSIUS, the support team for academic users of the Office for National Statistics' Longitudinal Study (the 'LS'). We are the people to contact if you are thinking about a new project using the LS. For information on the previous support group at the Centre for Longitudinal Studies, please click here CeLSIUS is funded by the ESRC free of charge to staff and students of UK academic institutions. We have also developed a series of web-based training modules (see Online training ) to help new users find out more about the LS, including practical details of how to use it. A brief summary of the LS follows: What is the LS? A dataset comprising linked event records for 1% of the population of England and Wales (about 500,000 people at any one census). It was set up in 1974 to address problems with the adequacy of occupational mortality data, and the lack of longitudinal fertility data, but since then it has been used to address a wide range of other research questions. Austria ... Children Demography is a broad social science discipline concerned with the study of human populations, primary with respect to their size, their structure and their development. Demographers deal with the collection, presentation and analysis of data relating to the basic life-cycle events and experiences of people: birth, marriage, divorce, household and family formation, employment, ageing, migration and death. The discipline emphasises empirical investigation of population processes, including the conceptualisation and measurement of these processes and the study of their determinants and consequences. The field of demography is also concerned with the broader nature of social and economic change, and with the impact of demographics change on the natural environment.

More glMONEY Nearly 20 studies of gay and lesbian populations have been conducted in the United States since the groundbreaking work of Dr. Alfred Kinsey in 1945. The best of these studies have helped us better understand how many lesbians and gay men there are in the United States, how we vote, where the bulk of us live and how much money members of our community earn and spend. Unfortunately, the results of some of these studies are of dubious value, and, in some cases, the studies and their findings have been portrayed out of context by journalists or lobbying groups seeking to undermine the GLBT fight for political legitimacy. In part one of this two-part series , I've compiled brief overviews detailing the highlights of every major gay and/or lesbian statistical study conducted over the past sixty years.

Developing
Research Capability
Population Studies Resident Fellowship For additional information about this fellowship, please contact ssfellowship@popcouncil.org The Population Council offers a few residential post-doctoral fellowships to persons who wish to pursue advanced training and research in population studies under the mentorship of a member of its research staff. Eligibility
Candidates must have recently completed a PhD degree in demography, population studies and/or a closely related social science discipline within 2 years, prior to the application deadline and be proficient in English. Applications may be submitted in anticipation of receiving of the doctoral degree, but the fellowship cannot begin until after the degree has been awarded. A key consideration in the selection of postdoctoral fellows is the congruence of research interests between the applicant and a Policy Research Division staff mentor. Long-Term Population Studies
Ranid Population Monitoring in Algonquin Provincial Park Since 1985, the population dynamics of three ranids ( R. catesbeiana, R. clamitans, and R. septentrionalis ) have been investigated using mark-recapture techniques. This ongoing, long-term study is establishing basic life history and population parameters as well as determining population status in the relatively pristine environment of Algonquin Provincial Park, Ontario. To date, research indicates that, although all three populations fluctuate annually, there is no apparent long-term decline in abundances. To further our understanding of population dynamics, we have recently begun to age individual frogs using skeletochronology. Initial results are encouraging in that several bullfrogs ( R. catesbeiana ) of known age, from the mark-recapture study, have been aged accurately. Bullfrogs are of particular concern because they have been reported to be declining in many parts of their range. This decline has been attributed, in part, to extensive commercial harvest. In 1996, we hope to compare the age-structure in our population with that of harvested populations. Other future research will examine longevity, sex ratio dynamics, distribution of reproductive success, and growth rates. Contact: C J. How fast is the community growing and where are they located ? * How are demographic processes of fertility, mortality and migration measured? * How are these related to their complex societal determinants? * Are the biggest number young, needing schools? Or aging, needing health care? * What pressures is the population putting on the environment? PROS Home Diabetes Clearing House Staff NORTHWEST Health SERCIS ... PROS Publications Population Research and Outcome Studies (formerly the Centre for Population Studies in Epidemiology) - Core business The core business of Population Research and Outcome Studies (PROS) is the monitoring and surveillance of population health and related issues. Information obtained from population health surveys is used to inform policy, programs and health services that will promote the health and well being of the South Australian population. Over the last decade PROS has earned an international reputation for its core business and makes significant contributions to global developments in monitoring of population health. Why are we in the monitoring and surveillance business? The new pattern of disease that is emerging around the world is increasing the prevalence of chronic disease. This is accompanied by a demographic shift to an older population with increasing urbanisation. The changing health pattern associated with these demographic changes is staggering in its implications. It points to the fact that large numbers of the population will suffer their chronic disease in old age and place powerful demands on the health system. Most chronic conditions are determined by socio-behavioural risk factors and social determinants, and it is the need to understand these etiologies and develop appropriate health system responses that drives the need for population monitoring and surveillance systems.
