Demographic Data Base
Centre for Population Studies
Research Policy The Centre for Population Studies (CPS) was formed on July 1, 1990, as an integral part of the Demographic Data Base (DDB). Its main objective is to develop research on the material computerized by the DDB, and to stimulate national and international research on the DDB material, where possible within a multi-disciplinary context. The CPS will seek to promote research by disciplines, such as sociology, demography, statistics, epidemiology and human genetics. An international Advisory Board for the CPS has been appointed, whose main role is to contribute to the further development of the DDB as an important international research centre. The Board advises the DDB management on research matters and functions as an ambassador for the DDB, and its products. The CPS research policy is to promote new research based on the DDB database and to focus resources on important research fields. It will also promote the creation of a number of visiting research positions and scholarships at the CPS in order to encourage a wider use of the DDB research material. The research policy will be submitted to relevant political bodies and research councils. It provides the framework for the formulation of new research projects. The CPS will seek to promote new research in the following areas:
  • The Individual and Family Life-course Population Genetics and Genetic Epidemiology Social and Spatial Mobility

Otoliths ("earstones") are small, white structures found in the head of all fishes other than sharks, rays and lampreys. Otoliths provide a sense of balance to fish in much the same way that the inner ear provides balance in humans. Fish otoliths also aid in hearing.
To the fisheries biologist, the otolith is one of the most important tools for understanding the life of fish and fish populations. Growth rings (annuli) not unlike those of a tree record the age and growth of a fish from the date of hatch to the time of death. Daily growth rings formed in the first year of life, and visible only through a microscope, record daily age and growth patterns in surprising detail. And sophisticated chemical techniques allow the reconstruction of everything from the year of hatch, to migration pathways, to the temperature of the water. Indeed, virtually the entire lifetime of the fish is recorded in the otolith. For that reason, otoliths are used and studied in almost every fisheries laboratory in the world. They also make ideal class or science projects, suitable for both high school and supervised elementary school students.
The Otolith Research Laboratory at the Bedford Institute of Oceanography is responsible for developing new and better methods for interpreting and using otoliths in studies of fish, fish populations and fish stock assessments. We are involved in many aspects of otolith research, from routine age determinations to the latest advances in isotope dilution ICPMS. Population Studies
The Population Studies Center studies how the U.S. population is growing and changing in response to shifts in the economy, the changing roles of men and women in families, and new policy initiatives. Our current research focuses in particular on immigration, mortality, sexual and reproductive health, adolescent risk behavior, child care and child welfare. In 2000, the center:
    • Completed a survey of 3400 immigration households in New York and Los Angeles. The survey will provide in depth information on the economic mobility and health of immigrant families and their well-being in the wake of welfare reform's far -reaching restrictions on immigrant benefits. The survey represents the a major new source of information on the immigrant population in the United States during a period in which national integration policies are changing. Published three major reports that provide new information to policy makers and program administrators about youth risk behaviors. Published 5 new reports on child care arrangements and costs in the U.S. based on the Urban Institute's 1997 National Survey of America's Families. These reports provide the first-ever analyses of state level child care data for multiple states. They document for the first time the enormous differences in child care patterns from state to state. This has made an important contribution to our understanding of child care, the importance of doing state or local analyses of these data, and of the limitations of national data for state and local use.

Many indigenous tribes of North America will be confronted with a dilemma in the not too distant future. The dilemma will be what to do about the tribe's enrollment rules. Currently tribes have the sovereign right to determine their own membership. This is similar to the way the United States (or any other sovereign nation ) can determine whether a person is eligible for citizenship. Should a tribe opt for a lower blood degree requirement, or stick with the current requirement and face almost certain extinction over time? One objection to lowering the blood degree requirement is the idea that it dilutes the

Biotags Remote Telemetry Systems The data is out in the field, and you need to bring it in to your PC, workstation or webserver in real time. If so, you've found the right site. Wherever data changes in the field - underwater, in air or underground - even over a wide temperature range, Biotags can provide complete wireless measurement solutions for field and lab. Biotags manufactures a variety of Radio Frequency (RF) data transmitters with onboard sensors, called Telemetry Tags, and their companion Field Data Loggers. Working together, these components capture sensor data on temperature, conductance, motion, voltage levels and field position, and networks the data to your lab or office computer system for analysis and verification. Would you like more information? Contact tech@biotags.net and tell us about your application.

    Courses in Population Studies
ECO 571/SOC 571 - Survey of Population Problems Survey of past and current trends in the growth of the population of the world and of selected regions. Analysis of the components of growth and their determinants. The social and economic consequences of population change. ECO 572/SOC 572 - Research Methods in Demography Source materials used in the study of population; standard procedures for the measurement of fertility, mortality, natural increase, migration, and nuptiality; and uses of model life tables and stable population analysis and other techniques of estimation when faced with inaccurate or incomplete data are studied. Prerequisite: 571 or instructor's permission. ECO 573/WWS 567 - Population and Development Determinants of demographic behavior in developing countries and the economic consequences of population change. Participants investigate such areas as high fertility as a peasant economic strategy; the relationship between fertility, children's education, and household savings; the impact of population growth rates on wages, rents, the distribution of income, aggregate savings, and technical change; models of internal migration and labor absorption; and the consequences of LDC to MDC migration. No previous knowledge of demographic techniques is required.
