POPULATION STUDIES
POPULATION STUDIES online at: www.tandf.co.uk/journals/titles/00324728.html The first English language journal concerned exclusively with demography, POPULATION STUDIES has been produced continuously by the Population Investigation Committee since 1947.
From Volume 57, 2003, the Journal is published and distributed on behalf of the PIC by Routledge Journals/Taylor and Francis Ltd. The editors retain complete editorial control.
Aims and Scope: For over half a century, Population Studies has reported significant advances in methods of demographic analysis, conceptual and mathematical theories of demographic dynamics and behaviour, and the use of these theories and methods to extend scientific knowledge and to inform policy and practice. The Journal’s coverage of this field is comprehensive: applications in developed and developing countries; historical and contemporary studies; quantitative and qualitative studies; analytical essays and reviews. The subjects of papers range from classical concerns, such as the determinants and consequences of population change, to such topics as family demography and evolutionary and genetic influences on demographic behaviour. Often the Journal’s papers have had the effect of extending the boundaries of its field.

Demographic information on some African Countries, from University of Pennsylvania
  • African Population Database Documenation (Uwe Deichmann)
This documentation describes the third version of a database of administrative units with associated population figures for Africa. This version provides considerably more than 4700 administrative units, compared to about 800 in the first and 2200 in the second version. In addition, for each of these units a population estimate was compiled for 1960, 70, 80 and 90 which provides an indication of past population dynamics in Africa.

    ABOUT POPULATION REVIEW
Population Review , a peer-reviewed journal of demography and population studies published since 1957, welcomes original articles on all aspects of human population problems, solutions, issues, trends and events as they relate to the developing countries of the world in Asia, Africa and Latin America. Population Review also accepts articles that examine population topics in the developed world, particularly as they relate to the developing world. Articles that are multidisciplinary in orientation (incorporating theoretical concepts and perspectives from anthropology, biology, ecology, economics, environmental science, epidemiology, geography, history, mass communications, medicine, political science, public health, psychology and sociology, among others) are highly desired. Population Review publishes original articles from distinguished, internationally recognized scholars. On occasion articles from relatively unknown, often younger contributors are given space in the journal. In addition to featured articles, open editorials that focus on contemporary population-related issues and events worldwide are published along with brief research reports and announcements. Finally, space is given to book reviews.

The worst evils against human dignity and national sovereignty cover themselves as ``population policies'' and ``expert population studies.'' Such ``population studies,'' by bodies like the U.S. National Security Council, have justified mass sterilizations, forced abortions, and even wars against Third World nations. The U.N.'s ongoing series of world government conferences including the Cairo International Conference on Population and Development, wanted to reduce the human population by half in 100 years. Where did this diabolical ``field of expertise'' come from? Encyclopedias and histories of the so-called ``science of demography,'' agree that it was primarily the invention of Sir William Petty, Britain's first Earl of Shelburne (1622-1687). The Galton Laboratory in London, world center since the 1920s of the notorious eugenics movementfor ``scientific improvement of populations''emphatically asserted in 1931 published lectures, that Petty founded ``population studies'' along with his friends Sir John Graunt, lord mayor of London, and Sir Edmund Halley. This was at the time of the chartering of the British Royal Society, of which all three were charter members. Its founding was based on a plan by Petty, which immediately became the European center of ``population statistics'' from the 1660s onward.

The British Society for Population Studies is a non-profitable society of persons, who have demonstrated a scientific interest in the study of human populations. BSPS was founded in 1973, but its origin goes back in the previous decade. The main objectives of the Society are to further the scientific study of biological, economic, historical, medical, social and other disciplines connected with human populations and to contribute to the public awareness of these problems. The society provides a forum for the discussion of issues connected with human population and acts as a vehicle for the interchange of education ideas. It also provides facilities for studies and research into subjects connected with human populations and for the exchange and dissemination of information concerning such research.

    European Association for Population Studies
    Welcome
Demographic developments in Europe as well as the causes and consequences of population trends are a challenging field for scientific study and debate. Scientists from a variety of disciplines are actively engaged in the study of European population trends and future prospects. Since a number of the issues addressed are common throughout the world, not only Europeans take a keen interest in population issues in Europe. Also European population experts are working in or on (mainly non-European) developing countries. In order to promote these studies and to foster the co-operation between those involved, the European Association for Population Studies (EAPS) was founded in 1983. EAPS is a scientific association of individual members and Affiliated Institutions EAPS is an international and multidisciplinary forum for population studies with a special focus on Europe's population. It aims to stimulate the interest in population issues among governments, national and international organizations and the general public. EAPS organizes conferences, seminars, workshops and working groups in close collaboration with its Affiliated Institutions and other organizations. EAPS also disseminates population-related information.
