Termoplasts, thermosets and biodegradable polymers.
http://sdnp.delhi.nic.in/resources/pollution/plasticproblem.html
CEE-NFS Vol.02, February 2001 Plastic problems Harsha T P The invention of plastic early in the twentieth century has changed the face of the modern world. Extremely versatile, long lasting and economic, plastic today is very popular among the masses. From computers to automobile parts to simple domestic appliances, plastic has found its place almost everywhere. At the same time, plastic also has certain undesirable qualities that make it a menace from the environmental point of view. Today, plastic has risen from being a problem to the level of a major pollutant in the world. Plastic is made by heating synthetic resins like acrylic, cellophane, celluloid, formica and nylon. These resins soften on heating and can be moulded to suit our convenience. Plastic can be classified into thermoplast and thermoset plastics. Thermoset plastic is heat resistant and can be used for cooking. But thermostat plastic is vulnerable to heat. Being versatile, plastic can been put to a variety of uses that include surgical instruments, computer parts, automobile parts, chairs, telephone, bags and even pens. Even metals have been replaced by plastic in certain areas. Bags made of plastic have become extremely popular. They are very convenient, strong and also affordable. Plastic is an important packing material. Foodstuff when packed in plastic can be hazardous to health, as plastic can contaminate the food. Considering the risk to public health, the Karnataka government has banned serving food and medicines in plastic covers and the production of plastic covers of thickness less than 20 microns. Plastic has not spared the animals either. Millions of mammals, birds, reptiles and fish are reported to be killed every year by the ingestion of plastic bags. Ranjan Dubey, a caretaker at shelter for old cows run by the Lucknow Nagar Nigam said that there were about 4 deaths per day. About 30 kg of plastic bags were recovered from the large intestine of a cow during the post mortem. According to Dr. Ansari, plastic bags were the main cause for the fatalities. When animals consume plastic bags, alimentary canals get blocked and the stomach becomes bloated. The animal stops eating and dies of starvation.

Staff Contact * This is a PDF file and requires the Adobe Acrobat Reader Introduction The Faraday Division in association with the Materials Chemistry Forum , are pleased to announce details of the 128th Faraday Discussion focusing on Self-Organising Polymers. The meeting will be held at the University of Leeds. The principle of self-organisation has emerged as an important concept in physical chemistry, underpinning the formation of mesoscopically ordered structures in colloids, surfactants and polymers. Often this self-organisation leads to intricate nanoscale structures as for example observed for block copolymers, liquid crystal polymers or biopolymers such as DNA or peptides. This Faraday Discussion will be focussed on examining how molecular self-organization in a range of apparently diverse polymeric systems - synthetic (liquid crystal polymers, block copolymers, dendrimers) as well as biological (DNA, polyelectrolytes, peptides) can be understood using tools from physical chemistry. Whether unifying themes can be identified is open to question and will be addressed at the meeting. New and unpublished experimental and theoretical work will be presented in the following areas:

Hello everyone. This revised 1998 version of the FAQ has some additions and minor style changes to improve readability. There have been no complaints about loading time, so the single-file format remains unchanged. The new Usenet version is created by cutting and pasting the Web version directly, so the Web version is now the master file. Please send any additions or corrections to Steve, Thanks.
