Information on beach pollution, water quality, and threats to the oceans and the life forms that inhabit them.
http://www.nrdc.org/water/oceans/
Pollution, habitat destruction and overfishing take a serious toll on our oceans, so NRDC works to preserve and restore the rich diversity of ocean life and the quality of coastal waters. Our widely covered beach-pollution research has prompted many states to clean up their beaches. We work to stop destructive fishing methods, end overfishing, rebuild fish populations, and reduce the tonnage of fish caught accidentally and thrown away dead. We helped create networks of fully protected marine reserves off the California and Florida coasts, and are pressing for more elsewhere. Finally, we work to ban offshore drilling in coastal areas, while promoting sound coastal zone management.

Pollution
From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia. Pollution " refers to harmful environmental contaminants and to the act or process of polluting the environment . Generally the process needs to result from human activity to be regarded as pollution. Even relatively benign products of human activity are liable to be regarded as pollution, if they precipitate negative effects later on. The nitrogen oxides produced by industry are often referred to as pollution, for example, although the substances themselves are not harmful. In fact, it is solar energy (sunlight) that converts these compounds to smog Pollution can take two major forms: local pollution and global pollution. In the past, only local pollution was thought to be a problem. For example, coal burning produces smoke , which in sufficient concentrations can be a health hazard. One slogan, taught in schools, was "dilution is the solution to pollution". The theory was that sufficiently dilute pollution could cause no damage. In recent decades, awareness has been rising that some forms of pollution pose a global problem. For example, human activity (primarily nuclear testing ) has significantly raised the levels of background radiation all over the world, which may lead to human health problems. Awareness of both kinds of pollution, among other things, has led to the

The question library on water related issues
What is water pollution?
Water pollution is any chemical, physical or biological change in the quality of water that has a harmful effect on any living thing that drinks or uses or lives (in) it. When humans drink polluted water it often has serious effects on their health. Water pollution can also make water unsuited for the desired use.
What are the major water pollutants?
There are several classes of water pollutants. The first are disease-causing agents. These are bacteria, viruses, protozoa and parasitic worms that enter sewage systems and untreated waste. More information on health effects of microrganisms A second category of water pollutants is oxygen -demanding wastes; wastes that can be decomposed by oxygen-requiring bacteria. When large populations of decomposing bacteria are converting these wastes it can deplete oxygen levels in the water. This causes other organisms in the water, such as fish, to die.
A third class of water pollutants is water-soluble inorganic pollutants, such as acids, salts and toxic metals. Large quantities of these compounds will make water unfit to drink and will cause the death of aquatic life.

RSS Feeds OUR AFFILIATES Friday, January 16, 2004 List of polluted local waters grows 75 lakes, rivers, and creeks deemed 'impaired' by state ecology agency By LISA STIFFLER AND ROBERT McCLURE SEATTLE POST-INTELLIGENCER REPORTERS Sprawling suburbs, trees lost to logging and development, and record numbers of pollution-spewing cars and trucks have combined to leave more Washington streams and lakes branded "polluted" than ever before. More than 700 waterways are in trouble most often because they're too warm to keep fish healthy, but also because of pollution from toxic chemicals and bacteria, state Ecology Department officials said yesterday. Seventy-five lakes, rivers and creeks were added to Ecology's impaired-waterways list since it was last compiled in 1998, many of them in the Puget Sound region. But the increased number doesn't necessarily mean the problem is getting worse. Improvements in water-quality testing around the state have helped turn up more violations, and officials say some waterways have been cleaned up.

anly Council has joined forces with the NSW Government Stormwater Trust and the University of Western Sydney (UWS) to develop a unique program linking environmental education, water quality monitoring, infrastructure provision and legislation to address concerns about ecosystem health in the catchment of Balgowlah Industrial Estate.
The project is funded by the EPA as part of their $80 million effort to combat urban stormwater pollution in New South Wales. ‘The Great Estate’ Stormwater Environmental Education Program (SEEP) is an environmental education program for companies in the Balgowlah Industrial Estate. It is an opportunity for responsible local business operators to become involved in a program that aims to ensure that our creeks, lagoons and beaches are kept pollution free for the native animals and plants that live there and also for recreational purposes and our future generations. Over 100 businesses in this area have been recognised as having a medium to high risk in terms of actual or potential stormwater pollution problems. The program is designed to address the issue of polluted stormwater runoff from these premises.

    http://www.lfelem.lfc.edu/tech/DuBose/webquest/Toni/OCEANIC.HTM
Splish Splash! Splish Splash you were taking a bath... Uh-Oh! Where's the water? You live in a small town on the coast of sunny California and there is a serious problem. You have no more running water. You call the water plant and the news is not good. Due to high bacteria levels in the water supply, the Pacific Ocean, the plant had to temporarily shut down. You now begin to think about all the damage that has probably been done to this huge body of water to cause such a predicament. Even though you just missed a shower, you wonder about the thousands of species of life that actually have to live in that dirty mess! You decide that something must be done. But what? In this three day activity, you are going to make a difference! The Task You find a neighbor who was equally suprised this morning about the town's running water problem. In this case, your neighbor is a partner from this class. You two decide to start your own organization. Your goal is to educate others on why we need to protect the ocean and how we can do it. You also need to choose one marine animal as a mascot for your organization. The first step you must take is to incorporate these ideas into a brochure within the next two days. You will research specific sites on the intenet. The information that you pull from the sites should be compiled into a four page brochure (the four sides of a folded piece of paper). Remember, you are trying to help people help the world!

In addition, the Division is responsible for the non-coal surface mining program and illegal coal mining under the Tennessee Coal Surface Mining Law of 1980, as amended. On an annual basis, the Division monitors, analyzes, and reports on the quality of Tennessee's water. In addition, a number of specific surveys are conducted, including studies of in-stream biological communities and documentation of contaminant levels in sediment and fish flesh. The fish and bacteriological data generated by the Division are used by the Department to issue advisories to the public when levels of contaminants exceed those considered to be protective of public health. Numerous complaints and inquiries are investigated and responded to each year. Under the Water Quality Control Act, municipal, industrial and other discharges of wastewater must obtain a permit from the Division. Approximately, 1,700 permits have been issued under the federally delegated National Pollutant Discharge Elimination System (NPDES). These permits establish pollution control and monitoring requirements based on protection of designated uses through implementation of water quality standards and other applicable state and federal rules.
