Subject: Water Pollution in the World's Oceans I am doing a report on water pollution and I was wondering if you could give me some info on water pollution. I have a few question I would like you to answer. If you have extra information, please send it to me.
  • What laws are there against oil tankers and oil?
  • Which do oil spills hurt more, animals or the ocean?
  • How much do people pollute yearly?
  • What are some ways to stop pollution?
  • How is plastic harmful to the ocean?
  • How can an ocean get contaminated with nuclear radiation?
per se , as oil is mostly composed of insoluble organic compounds. On the surface, where the lighter components of oil in an oil spill will float, sea birds, phytoplankton (plants) and fishes are all affected during an oil spill. The oil physically fouls birds feathers (making it difficult for them to fly), clogs fishes' gills (making it difficult for them to breath) and blocks out the sunlight (making it difficult for marine plants to photosynthesize). When oil sinks to the bottom of the ocean, it again fouls organisms living in or on the sediments.

Topics covered in this Paper include pollution by sediments, fertilizers as water pollutants, and pesticides as water pollutants. This 111 page document is available in PDF format from the FAO Land and Water Development Division (AGL) Web site, and can be viewed using Adobe Acrobat Reader. water pollution sediment pollutants pesticides ... Soil and water quality : an agenda for agriculture Published on the Web in 1993 by the National Academy Press, this book was prepared by the Committee on Long-Range Soil and Water Conservation Policy, which comes under the auspices of the US National Research Council. This book presents four strategies that aim to help the United States meet increasing agricultural production demands whilst serving as a basis for a national policy to protect soil and water quality. The Committee recommends specific farm practices and new approaches to prevent soil degradation and water pollution and details methods of evaluating soil management systems. Information is provided on improving the management of nitrogen, phosphorus, manure, pesticides, sediments, salt and trace elements. This 542 page full-text report is freely available online and can be browsed by chapter or searched by keyword.

    47. Water Pollution
to that of people in the developing countries, but used all their high technology skills, the developed world might have an almost pollution free water supply.
    http://www.zephryus.demon.co.uk/geography/resources/environ/water.html
    Water Pollution
Everybody needs fresh water. Without water people, animals and plants cannot live. Although a few plants and animals can make do with saltwater, all humans need a constant supply of fresh water if they are to stay fit and healthy. Of the total supply of water on the Earth, only about 3 percent of it is fresh, and most of that is stored as ice and snow at the poles, or is so deep under the surface of the Earth that we cannot get to it. Despite so much of the water being out of reach, we still have a million cubic miles of it that we can use. That's about 4,300,000 cubic kilometers of fresh water to share out between most of the plants, animals and people on the planet. Whether water is clean enough to use, or too polluted depends on many things such as where it is, whether there is enough for everyone to use, what we do with it, and how we deal with the water we have used before we let it run back to join the rivers and lakes. The Developing World In the developing world the biggest problem is the shortage of water and the lack of clean supplies. When water is very scarce people have to make good use of it. That might mean using the same source of water for drinking and cooking, a place to wash, a place to clean clothing, pots and pans and a place to let the farm animals drink as well. The same water is used by many people for many different purposes, and each time the water becomes a little more polluted.

Background top The Problem A Legacy of Poor Water Quality top The Solution - Restoring the Balance In order to restore clear water and wildlife to broads which have deteriorated, it is essential to reduce the levels of nutrients in the water. Research has shown that recovery of aquatic life depends on a dramatic reduction in either the nitrates or the phosphates. Phosphates come mainly from human sewage. Sources of nitrates are more widespread and varied, so work has concentrated on removing phosphates. This is achieved by phosphate stripping by Anglian Water at sewage treatment works which dispose of effluent upstream of the Broads area, and by suction-dredging to remove the nutrient-rich mud which has accumulated in the bottom of the broads.

Pollution and Water Resources: Scientific and Institutional Aspects
The purpose of this seminar is to explore the effects of large scale and efficient regulation of pollution on the redistribution of available water resources. Proceedings of the seminar, collections of the lectures, are published yearly. To date, twenty-nine volumes (279 articles and two scientific books) have been printed. Besides these volumes, the seminar has contributed over forty articles written in seven languages abroad and in the United States. The research institute of the seminar, the American Academy of Ocean Sciences, conducted research actively from 1969 to 1985. During the past thirty years, thirty-three graduate students have participated in the seminar and their participation has been credited toward their studies.
