101. Error Propagation In Air Dispersion Modeling
A sensitivity study of the Gaussian dispersion modeling of continuous, buoyant pollution plumes illustrating how seemingly minor changes in some of the key variables can result in a propagated overprediction factor ranging from 6 to 80.

ERROR PROPAGATION IN AIR DISPERSION MODELING
Milton R. Beychok, Consulting Engineer
Newport Beach, California, USA

Air dispersion modeling has been evolving since before the 1930s. Over the last 15-25 years, strict environmental regulations and the availability of personal computers have fueled an immense growth in the use of mathematical models to predict the dispersion of air pollution plumes. Beychok's recently published book, " Fundamentals Of Stack Gas Dispersion ", details the evolution of the widely used Gaussian air dispersion models and their inherent assumptions and constraints. Unfortunately, many users of such models are completely unaware of those assumptions and constraints and mistakenly believe that the precision achievable with computers equates to accuracy. This article discusses how the propagation of seemingly small errors in the Gaussian model parameters can cause very large variations in the model's predictions. In most dispersion models, determining the pollutant concentrations at ground-level receptors beneath an elevated, buoyant plume of dispersing pollutant-containing gas involves two major steps:

Cleanir Update:
Enter your email address to get our monthly update. New - fill out our online questionnaire . We welcome your comments about cleanair.ca. Never before have Canadians been as concerned about clean air. Public health experts estimate that air pollution is responsible for 16,000 premature deaths in this country each year; at this rate, forty Canadians die from air pollution-related causes each and every day. We hope this site will provide a place for concerned Canadians to learn more about the air pollution, to share information and strategies, and coordinate efforts to protect our air. Much of the content for this site has been adapted from a new publication: authored by the Environmental Law Centre at UVic and published by the Sierra Legal Defence Fund. This site is managed by students at UVic ELC . To support the site, we have created the Clean Air Canada Society whose directors have a wealth of experience working on air pollution issues with NGO's from coast to coast. This site is a work-in-progress; an attempt to better harness the voices and energies of clean air activists (and would-be activists) nationwide. We welcome your ideas, suggestions, contributions and thoughts and will soon be launching a discussion board to facilitate interactions. We also welcome your feedback about our website; fill out our

116. Fact Sheet, Volcanic Air Pollution--A Hazard In Hawai`i; Fact Sheet 169-97
A twopage color fact sheet about the volcanic air pollution that results from the release of sulfur dioxide gas from Kilauea Volcano, Hawai`i.
http://wrgis.wr.usgs.gov/fact-sheet/fs169-97/
U.S. Geological Survey Fact Sheet 169-97
Online Version 1.1, revised June 2000 Noxious sulfur dioxide gas and other pollutants emitted from Kilauea Volcano on the Island of Hawai`i react with oxygen and atmospheric moisture to produce volcanic smog (vog) and acid rain. Vog poses a health hazard by aggravating preexisting respiratory ailments, and acid rain damages crops and can leach lead into household water supplies. The U.S. Geological Survey's Hawaiian Volcano Observatory is closely monitoring gas emissions from Kilauea and working with health professionals and local officials to better understand volcanic air pollution and to enhance public awareness of this hazard. On the morning of February 8, 2000, Harry Kim, Director of Hawai`i County Civil Defense, asked radio stations on the Island of Hawai`i to broadcast a special message concerning the thick, acrid haze that had covered the southeastern part of the island for several days. Listeners were told that outdoor activities in parks might be canceled in affected areas and that schools might need to keep children indoors. People were also warned to be aware of respiratory problems, as these conditions could deteriorate more rapidly in areas of heavier haze. This choking haze was not caused by a forest fire or industrial pollution but by light winds blowing gas emissions from Kilauea Volcano into the area. Kilauea Volcano on the Island of Hawai`i emits about 2,000 tons of sulfur dioxide (SO

http://k12science.ati.stevens-tech.edu/curriculum/airproj/
Welcome to Air Pollution: What’s the Solution? an educational project for students, grades 6 - 12, that uses online real time data to guide student discovery of the science behind the causes and effects of ground level ozone. Ozone is a gas that occurs both in the Earth’s upper atmosphere and at ground level. Ozone can be "good" or "bad", depending on where it is found:
Good Ozone , ozone that occurs naturally in the Earth’s upper atmosphere—10 to 30 miles above the Earth’s surface—shields us from the sun’s harmful ultraviolet rays. Good Ozone, or stratospheric ozone, is the type of ozone most frequently discussed in the media. Bad Ozone , is found in the Earth’s lower atmosphere, near ground level. Ground level ozone is an odorless and invisible gas that forms when pollutants emitted by cars, power plants, industrial boilers, refineries, chemical plants, and other sources react chemically in the presence of sunlight. The presence of ground level ozone presents a serious air quality problem in many parts of the United States. For humans and other animals, ozone is harmful when it is inhaled. Even at low levels of concentration, ozone can cause a number of respiratory effects. Through this project, students will focus on ground level ozone, discovering what ground level ozone is, what factors contribute to its formation and the health effects from breathing ozone. Students will use data and animated maps from the internet and monitor for the presence of ground level ozone. Students are challenged to think critically and creatively about the problems surrounding ground level ozone.
