Information Provided by
NASA Study shows common plants help reduce indoor air pollution.... C ommon indoor plants may provide a valuable weapon in the fight against rising levels of indoor air pollution. Those plants in your office or home are not only decorative, but NASA scientists are finding them to be surprisingly useful in absorbing potentially harmful gases and cleaning the air inside modern buildings.
NASA and the Associated Landscape Contractors of America (ALCA) have announced the findings of a 2-year study that suggest a sophisticated pollution-absorbing device: the common indoor plant may provide a natural way of helping combat " SICK BUILDING SYNDROME ".
Research into the use of biological processes as a means of solving environmental problems, both on Earth and in space habitats, has been carried out for many years by Dr. Bill Wolverton, formerly a senior research scientist at NASA's John C. Stennis Space Center, Bay St. Louis, Miss.
Based on preliminary evaluations of the use of common indoor plants for indoor air purification and revitalization, ALCA joined NASA to fund a study using about a dozen popular varieties of ornamental plants to determine their effectiveness in removing several key pollutants associated with indoor air pollution. NASA research on indoor plants has found that living plants are so efficient at absorbing contaminants in the air that some will be launched into space as part of the biological life support system aboard future orbiting space stations.

70. Air Pollution: What's The Solution?
An educational project for students, grades 6 12, that uses online real time data to guide student discovery of the science behind the causes and effects of ground level ozone.
http://www.k12science.org/curriculum/airproj/
Welcome to Air Pollution: What’s the Solution? an educational project for students, grades 6 - 12, that uses online real time data to guide student discovery of the science behind the causes and effects of ground level ozone. Ozone is a gas that occurs both in the Earth’s upper atmosphere and at ground level. Ozone can be "good" or "bad", depending on where it is found:
Good Ozone , ozone that occurs naturally in the Earth’s upper atmosphere—10 to 30 miles above the Earth’s surface—shields us from the sun’s harmful ultraviolet rays. Good Ozone, or stratospheric ozone, is the type of ozone most frequently discussed in the media. Bad Ozone , is found in the Earth’s lower atmosphere, near ground level. Ground level ozone is an odorless and invisible gas that forms when pollutants emitted by cars, power plants, industrial boilers, refineries, chemical plants, and other sources react chemically in the presence of sunlight. The presence of ground level ozone presents a serious air quality problem in many parts of the United States. For humans and other animals, ozone is harmful when it is inhaled. Even at low levels of concentration, ozone can cause a number of respiratory effects. Through this project, students will focus on ground level ozone, discovering what ground level ozone is, what factors contribute to its formation and the health effects from breathing ozone. Students will use data and animated maps from the internet and monitor for the presence of ground level ozone. Students are challenged to think critically and creatively about the problems surrounding ground level ozone.

The Norwegian Pollution Control Authority (SFT) and the county governors together carried out about 1900 inspections of businesses in 2003, revealing in the process that importers and dealers often know little about the possible health and environmental impacts of the products they market. At the same time, however, SFT sees some environmental improvements in certain sectors. [06.05.04] Read more

works at every level of government and in the courts to hold power companies, manufacturers and state and local authorities to strict air pollution standards.
http://www.nrdc.org/air/pollution/default.asp
In the past three decades, environmental measures have cleared up much of the visible pollution that once hovered menacingly over urban areas, but smog, soot and haze persist in many cities and even cloud the views in wilderness areas. Further, we've learned that air pollution can be deadly even if we can't see it. It causes lung disease and cancer. It poisons rivers and lakes, damages trees, and kills wildlife. NRDC works at every level of government and in the courts to hold power companies, manufacturers and state and local authorities to pollution standards. In addition, we use market-based strategies to promote new, less-polluting technologies.

Indoor Air Pollution Working Group
A two day conference entitled Museum Pollution : Detection and Mitigation of Carbonyls was held at Strathclyde University on the 17-18 June 1998. Over 30 delegates from the UK, the Netherlands, Denmark, Canada and the US attended. Several carbonyl pollution issues were discussed and a number of actions were proposed.
The initiative to have the 1998 meeting resulted in setting up a working group and the momentum that was gained has been consolidated during the following years.
Since 1998, meetings have been held annually, at Instituut Collectie Nederland (1999), Oxford Brookes University (2001), The National Museum of Denmark (2001) and University of East Anglia (2003).
During all meetings, the developments in research into indoor air pollution and conservation were discussed in an informal, yet serious, atmosphere. The next meeting will be held on November 10-12, 2004, at CNR-ISAC in Padova, Italy.
