Understanding Acid Rain Acid rain is a complex environmental problem whose solution demands knowledge of meteorology, chemistry, and environmental policy. In this article, we'll first examine what acid rain is, how it's produced, and why it threatens our environment. Acid Rain This informational article by the US Environmental Protection Agency covers topics such as how acid rain forms, how its effects are measured, and what's being done to aleviate the problems it causes. Page 2 (04/20/2002) U.S. EPA study finds cancer risk from non-regulated air pollutants including benzene, arsenic, vinyl chloride, diesel exhaust, formaldehyde, and chromium is at least 10 times so-called "acceptable" levels. U.S. residents have a cancer risk from toxic chemicals in the air that's at least 10 times the Environmental Protection Agency's acceptable level, and 12 million people experience risks 100 times higher, according to an unreleased EPA study. "Millions of people live in areas where air toxics may pose potentially significant health concerns," says the report. Because they've gone unnoticed, compared to soot and smog, toxins in the air are "the sleeping horror," said private atmospheric chemist Paulette Middleton, who reviewed the data as part of EPA's Scientific Advisory Board. "Some of the impacts of these hazardous air pollutants could be a lot worse than some of the things we tend to worry about, like ozone."

See Pollution: Acid Rain (08/24/2001) World Bank says Asia's air pollution now worse than Europe and North America combined, causes tens of thousands of deaths each year. Pollution in Asia has worsened in the last year and is directly responsible for the death of tens of thousands in Beijing, Jakarta, Seoul, Bangkok and Manila, according to the World Bank and the Stockholm Development Institute (SDI). SDI says the region's sulfur dioxide, ammonia and nitrogen oxides have been rising steadily over the past few decades and ground level ozone concentration has increased to the point where air pollution in the continent has now surpassed the combined emissions of Europe and North America.

The Atmospheric Composition Research Program (ACRP) is a division of the Frontier Research System for Global Change (FRSGC), which is a joint project of NASDA and JAMSTEC. Using a three-dimensional global chemical transport model (CTM), the Program Director Dr. Hajime Akimoto and ACRP researcher Dr. Oliver Wild have shown that ozone formed from air pollutants emitted in each of the continents of the northern hemisphere-East Asia, North America, and Europe-is subject to long-range intercontinental transport. This research revealed that the ozone formed from air pollutant emissions in East Asia, in particular, is transported to the upper troposphere, and carried on the westerlies to North America and Europe, thereby promoting global warming. Focusing attention on the Earth's surface, however, East Asia was found to be affected by ozone pollution from Europe. The results of this research will be published in the November 16 edition of the American Geophysical Union's Journal of Geophysical Research Background
The Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change (IPCC) 2001 Report states that tropospheric ozone is as important a radiative forcing agent as methane in global mean terms, and that attainment of air quality targets could be threatened in the majority of the northern hemisphere (

Lichens
Air Pollution, Lichens and Mosses
by Kevin J. Lyman
EDITOR'S NOTE:
A s early as the mid 1800's, botanists became aware that lichens and mosses were becoming uncommon in areas within and surrounding large towns and cities. They began to recognize that air pollution emitted from these urban areas was affecting the colonization and growth of these organisms. I n 1866, William Nylander, a Finnish naturalist, was the first to link the disappearance of lichens and air pollution. He noticed that some lichen species present within Luxembourg Gardens, Paris, were missing in other parts of the city. He attributed these differences to air quality. Over the next thirty years, fumes from coal-burning industrial furnaces gradually led to the eradication of the lichen population within the park. A long with lichens, mosses too have been disappearing from large cities since the late 1800's. Even though some species of mosses and lichens can be found in the harshest environments (Antarctic, Arctic and deserts), most species are very sensitive to air pollution. There are, however, a few species that can survive in areas where the pollution levels are relatively high and there are several other species that can tolerate moderate levels of air pollution. By knowing which of these species are most sensitive to air pollution and documenting their presence or absence, it is easy to determine how "clean" or "dirty" the air is. S ulfur dioxide (SO ) does the most widespread damage to lower plants, even though it is only one of several air pollution components in the atmosphere. Sulfur dioxide pollution is the result of industrial and urban emissions.

We are a partner in a European Union project developing innovative dispersion models. For more information, please visit http://www.eu-oscar.org/ We are also assisting a consortium of universities across the UK investigating air quality at a very local level. It answers questions about personal exposure whilst walking along a very busy road, such as Marylebone Road, and using different modes of transport. For more information about the DAPPLE consortium please visit www.dapple.org.uk On the 1st October we ran a DAPPLE seminar at Council House, Marylebone Road, NW1 open to the public and workers interested in local air quality. Four presentations were given and they can be emailed (4 Mega bytes each) if you contact us The presentations available are:

"If I have one dollar and you have one dollar, and you give me one dollar and I give you one dollar, we will both have one dollar. Saving Our Environment tells you what everyone can do to save our natural environment. But we do not just tell you. The best way to benefit from this site is to interact with it.
