Federation of European Societies of Plant Biology
The Federation of European Societies of Plant Biology (formally the Federation of European Societies of Plant Physiology) is Europe's largest and most widely representative society of plant scientists. It comprises over 3200 members drawn from 31 constituent national or regional societies of plant physiology, botany or biology. Almost all the countries of western, central and eastern Europe are represented. The FESPB also has Corporate Members and a category for Individual Members who do not belong to one of the constituent societies. The aims of FESPB are to advance research, education, and the exchange of information amongst plant biologists within Europe and beyond, and to support the publication of the results of research through its five affiliated international journals: Journal of Experimental Botany Journal of Plant Physiology Plant Physiology and Biochemistry Physiologia Plantarum and Functional Plant Biology In pursuit of these aims, FESPB produces a regular electronic newsletter (FESPBAlert) that carries topical information about FESPB and the activities of its members, in addition to job opportunities and studentships and announcements of forthcoming conferences, meetings and workshops arranged by other organizations.

      General Information
The department provides lectures and courses in basic plant cytology, anatomy and physiology for students of general biology, molecular biology and genetics, systematic biology and ecology, biochemistry and environmental chemistry. Specialized lectures and courses for advanced students involve, e.g. ecophysiology of plants, mineral nutrition, production biology, physiology of algae and cyanophytes, biotic relations in soil, plant water relations, methods of plant explants, and energic metabolism of plants. Research activity of the department in 2000 was realized mainly within the frame of several granted project: Field and laboratory measurements of photosynthetic performance, water use efficiency, mycorrhizal infection, seasonal changes in nonstructural storage carbohydrates, and storage nitrogenous compounds were done on various plant species from alluvial mesophytic meadows near Lednice (South Moravia). The complex ecophysiological research was focused on explanation of competitive advantage of invading grass species (mainly

    Textbook
    Plants in Action
is a lavishly illustrated textbook, written and edited by members of the Australian and New Zealand Societies of Plant Physiologists and Horticulture Societies . This textbook was published in 1999 by Macmillan Education Australia Pty Ltd, and won the Australian Publishers Award for the best tertiary textbook for 1999 in competition with all other tertiary texts published in Australia that year. The judges were especially complimentary about subject coverage, high quality illustrations, and a clarity of prose conducive to easy reading.
Plants in Action explores basic principles underlying plant biology in natural and managed communities throughout Australasia. By providing up-to-date and useful perspectives on plant science, this book will appeal immediately to upper level undergraduates in Universities and tertiary Institutes of Technology where plant physiology forms part of their degree coursework in Agriculture, Horticulture, Forestry and Environmental Sciences. Postgraduate students as well as professional plant scientists will also find much useful source material in this textbook because the narrative is built on credible experiments and richly illustrated with original data. Numerous vignettes provide a human background to new knowledge that is readily transparent and structured for easy 'grazing'.
