Metabolomic Analysis
The group studies the regulation of plant biochemical pathways in order to learn more about source-sink relationships in plants, and develops methods for metabolomic analysis using mass spectrometry coupled with gas and liquid chromatography (GC/MS and LC/MS). Metabolomic analysis is aimed at the comprehensive and quantitative analysis of all metabolites of a biological system, and necessarily includes novel strategies for compound identification and bioinformatic data mining.

Fall Semester, MWF 1.30 PM, Room HLA 210 Instructor: David Rhodes (Office, Room HLA 114) This 15 week course is a 3 credit, graduate level course consisting of 3 parts. Parts A and C are taught by David Rhodes, and Part B is taught by Nick Carpita. Part A primarily covers plant carbon metabolism (photosynthesis, respiration, lipid biosynthesis). Part B primarily covers cell wall biosynthesis, cellulose and sugar metabolism. Part C takes an in-depth look at the regulation of nitrogen (N) and sulfur (S) metabolism in plants, and the interfaces between nitrogen, sulfur and carbon metabolism, and between primary and secondary metabolism. This web page provides course notes discussing key aspects of plant N and S assimilation pathways and their control, and provides a comprehensive list of references. The HORT640 page provides convenient links to the "PubMed", "Scirus", "ISI Web of Knowledge" and "Google" search engines to facilitate searches for additional references and other www resources. The HORT640 page also provides extensive links to ligand, enzyme, metabolic pathway and gene databases where enzyme reactions, biochemical maps, substrate and product structures, and the latest protein and gene sequence data for specified enzymes can be obtained. Because of the extensive literature in this subject area, independent reading is expected. Beginning in Fall 2003, the following book is

Jobs last update: February 02, 2004 Webmaster Institute of Plant Sciences The Institute of Plant Sciences of the University of Berne (IPS), Switzerland, is a teaching and research institute, consisting of five independent research sections. The education of a plant scientists at the IPS takes four years, including a diploma work (Master's thesis) of one year, a PhD thesis lasts three years. Our aim is the education of plant scientists who are able to work independently as scientists in research or administration, who have a broad knowledge about general botany, who understand important processes in plants and who master the most important methods in plant ecology, statistics, physiology, biochemistry and molecular biology. In addition we stress the ability to co-operate, to give good seminars and to take responsibility. The research at the IPS focuses on vegetation ecology (D. M. Newbery

Aims and Scope
Physiologia Plantarum has been published by the Scandinavian Society for Plant Physiology since 1948. The journal publishes original, hypothesis-driven research describing aspects of experimental plant biology covering molecular and cell biology, biochemistry and biophysics and ecophysiology. By maintaining this broad scope, Physiologia Plantarum aims to facilitate the exchange of knowledge between researchers working at different organizational levels of plant biology. Physiologia Plantarum has been using a fast, web-based manuscript handling and review platform since 2000, with a time to first decision for papers received in 2003 of around 6 weeks. To further speed up publication, in spring 2004 all papers accepted will be published electronically via

TOPICAL REVIEWS IN PLANT BIOLOGY Edited by Jim Shinkle , Department of Biology, Trinity University, San Antonio, TX 78212-7200. 1993-1997 edited by Bob Wise , Department of Biology, University of Wisconsin Oshkosh, Oshkosh, WI 54901 We are testing 2 different formats for providing information on articles from Trends in Plant Science. For 1998, the subject index is provided, and for 1999 the table of contents is reproduced. If you find one or the other more effective please email Jim Shinkle. The index and contents were compiled courtesy of Hugh Blackbourn, PhD, Editor of Trends in Plant Science. The tables of contents for Trends in Plant Science and Current Opinion in Plant Biology can be accessed by registering with BioMedNet at the following link: http://www.biomednet.com/display/entrance . Registration is free. No attempt was made to be all-inclusive; several other journals publish quality review articles. However, it was felt that the sources given above are the ones most likely to be subscribed to by most colleges and universities. To locate a particular review title, use the "Find" function from the choices under the "Edit" pull-down in your web browser to conduct a keyword search.

Plant Physiology Photosynthesis Transpiration Respiration Osmosis Photosynthesis The process by which plants use the sun's light to produce food, specifically sugars. Many things must be present for photosynthesis to take place. The sun's light, water, carbon dioxide and chlorophyll are needed to complete the process vital to plant growth. The overall equation for photosynthesis is deceptively simple. In fact, a complex set of physical and chemical reactions must occur in a coordinated manner for the synthesis of carbohydrates. To produce a sugar molecule such as sucrose, plants require nearly 30 distinct proteins that work within a complicated membrane structure. Research into the mechanism of photosynthesis centers on understanding the structure of the photosynthetic components and the molecular processes that use radiant energy to drive carbohydrate synthesis. The research involves several disciplines, including physics, biophysics, chemistry, structural biology, biochemistry, molecular biology and physiology, and serves as an outstanding example of the success of multidisciplinary research. As such, photosynthesis presents a special challenge in understanding several interrelated molecular processes. O + light energy = C H O The product of photosynthesis is a carbohydrate, such as the sugar glucose, and oxygen which is released to the atmosphere. All of the sugar produced in the photosynthetic cells of plants and other organisms is derived from the initial chemical combining of carbon dioxide and water with sunlight. This chemical reaction is catalyzed by chlorophyll acting in concert with other pigment, lipid, sugars, protein, and nucleic acid molecules. Sugars created in photosynthesis can be later converted by the plant to starch for storage, or it can be combined with other sugar molecules to form specialized carbohydrates such as cellulose, or it can be combined with other nutrients such as nitrogen, phosphorus, and sulfur, to build complex molecules such as proteins and nucleic acids.
