121. Welcome To The Society For In Vitro Biology
The society was founded as the Tissue Culture Association to foster exchange of knowledge of in vitro biology of cells, tissues and organs from both plant and animals (including humans). The focus is on biological research, development, and applications of significance to science and society.

The Society for In Vitro Biology (SIVB) was founded in 1946 as the Tissue Culture Association to foster exchange of knowledge of in vitro biology of cells, tissues and organs from both plant and animals (including humans). The focus is on biological research, development, and applications of significance to science and society. The mission is accomplished through the Society's publications; national and local conferences, meetings and workshops; and through support of teaching initiatives in cooperation with educational institutions. Over the years, SIVB has expanded to create an environment of scientific exchange and interdisciplinary synergy with the goal of advancing current and future systems for in vitro biology.

A research group in the Department of Plant Biochemistry, Center for Chemistry and Chemical Engineering, Lund University, Sweden Chloroplasts and mitochondria are energy-converting organelles of eukaryotic cells. They also contain small, specialised, functional genomes.
Their genetic and energy-converting systems are bacterial in origin. But most genes for chloroplast and mitochondrial components are now found in the cell nucleus. So why did some genes move, while others did not?

    Plant Molecular Biology Center
    Northern Illinois University
The Plant Molecular Biology Center (PMBC) at Northern Illinois University was established in 1985 by the Illinois Board of Regents as an autonomous unit within the Departments of Biological Sciences and Chemistry. Located in Montgomery Hall on the NIU campus, the center provides a locus for the promotion, coordination, and facilitation of research activities in plant molecular and cellular biology. The center is also concerned with the transfer of this technology into industrial applications. While partially supported by the state of Illinois, the PMBC receives most of its funding in the form of research grants and contributions. Several industrial firms dealing with plants or plant products are affiliated with the PMBC. Industrial Contacts and the Industrial Advisory Board
The Plant Molecular Biology Center is charged with developing active working relationships with industrial and commercial firms with interests that can benefit from the center's discoveries. Since its establishment, the PMBC has actively undertaken a corporate outreach effort to communicate the capabilities of the scientific programs in the center to various industrial concerns. An industrial advisory committee was established to assure that the center's research is directed at objectives of concern to commercial firms.

We study the flow of carbon from the atmosphere, through plants, and ultimately to microbes (and other members of the decomposer community) in the soil, as well as how water fluxes into and out of roots affect microbial activity around plant roots. Several of the major questions we are asking are: What are the consequences of the quality, quantity, and timing of carbon flow from plants to soil for the microbial activity essential to ecosystem carbon and nutrient cycling? Can plants adjust the amount or type of carbon compounds lost from roots to encourage growth of particular microbial communities? How does the ebb and flow of the transpiration stream affect resources available to rhizosphere microbial and soil faunal communities? How do long-term management regimes, such as till and no-till, or silage harvest vs. grain harvest, affect soil carbon pools and nitrogen trace gas fluxes from agroecosystems? Answers to these questions will have application in understanding the function of natural ecosystems and in managing agricultural and silvicultural systems.
