Aims and Scope
Physiologia Plantarum has been published by the Scandinavian Society for Plant Physiology since 1948. The journal publishes original, hypothesis-driven research describing aspects of experimental plant biology covering molecular and cell biology, biochemistry and biophysics and ecophysiology. By maintaining this broad scope, Physiologia Plantarum aims to facilitate the exchange of knowledge between researchers working at different organizational levels of plant biology. Physiologia Plantarum has been using a fast, web-based manuscript handling and review platform since 2000, with a time to first decision for papers received in 2003 of around 6 weeks. To further speed up publication, in spring 2004 all papers accepted will be published electronically via

Welcome
The School of Plant Biology was formed in 2002 by a merger of the Plant Science Group from the Faculty of Agriculture and the Department of Botany from the Faculty of Science. As a consequence the School has a very broad base and a great diversity of contributing disciplines, ranging from Crop Science and Marine Science on one hand to Plant Biochemistry and Molecular Biology on the other. The School focuses on excellence in teaching, research and research training as related to the functioning of plants in both natural and managed systems. Natural systems include terrestrial, as well as aquatic environments ranging from freshwater to estuarine and marine habitats. Managed systems include those of broad scale agriculture, horticulture, viticulture, forests and landscaped areas. The School addresses both basic and applied areas in its research portfolio. The applied research is largely addressing the needs of the community, as related to agriculture, horticulture and the natural environment and to the management of resources. Basic research spans the many disciplines that relate to an understanding of plant structure and function, plant behaviour, evolution and the interaction of plants with other organisms. The discipline base of the school includes genetics, biochemistry and molecular biology, microbiology, physiology and ecology as well as plant taxonomy and systematics.

(Described in Novon 12: 335. 2002) "Bryophytes" is a resource devoted to Bryology, the branch of plant science concerned with the study of mosses, liverworts and hornworts. It provides information on the classification, structural features, natural history, ecology and evolutionary relationships of these plants. Although small in stature, bryophytes play significant roles in diverse terrestrial ecosystems. They are found growing on soil, rocks and/or trees throughout the world, from coastal Antarctica to the peat bogs of the Northern hemisphere, from the deserts of Australia to the rain forests of the Amazon. They are an essential part of this planet's biodiversity. Click on any of the topics below to learn more about these fascinating organisms.

Plant Biology and Evolution Index
(Updated: February 17, 2004)
This section is devoted to plant biology and evolution. Most people I meet don't care much about plants over and above including such things like lettuce and parlsey as part of someone's daily food consumption. I just have to say that plants can be an interesting group to study too! Don't worry, this is all good stuff some excellent examples about how evolution works can be seen from the plant world. • Plant Evolution: introduction.
  • Chloroplast Genetics and Endosymbiosis.
  • Chromosome Doubling Mechanisms.

Plant Biology Research Group The Plant Biology Research Group is an inter-divisional research group within the School of Biological Sciences that covers all aspects of Plant Biology from plant ecology to the structure of plant proteins. The main strengths of the Group are in the fields of membrane transport, the regulation of plant development, plant/pathogen interactions and responses to environmental stress.
    Dr Matthew Terry
mjt@soton.ac.uk Phytochrome synthesis and function The work in my laboratory is primarily concerned with the synthesis of the phytochrome chromophore and the mechanisms by which phytochrome regulates chlorophyll synthesis and plastid development. Work is currently in progress to characterize phytochrome chromophore-deficient mutants and to determine the structure and function of heme oxygenases in plants. We are also interested in understanding how different members of the phytochrome family regulate chlorophyll synthesis and elucidating light-responsive signalling pathways involved in this process. We are focussing particularly on the regulation of glutamyl-tRNA reductase the first committed step in chlorophyll biosynthesis.
