  • (Pi Day 2001) - The pi searcher now provides 100 million digits, made possible by the new box and the compressed searching.
  • - The Pi Searcher now runs on the box that ArosNet Colocation Services is hosting for me, and just got a bit faster. You probably won't notice the difference, but it's about 4x faster now that it's the only computationally intensive thing running on this machine.
  • - Compressed the digits two per byte, and wrote a custom search routine. The pi searcher is now nearly as fast as a linear search can be, and uses less space than before.

"The story of pi reflects the most seminal, the most serious and sometimes the silliest aspects of mathematics. A surprising amount of the most important mathematics and a significant number of the most important mathematicians have contributed to its unfolding directly or otherwise.
Pi is one of the few concepts in mathematics whose mention evokes a response of recognition and interest in those not concerned professionally with the subject. It has been a part of human culture and the educated imagination for more than twenty five hundred years. The computation of Pi is virtually the only topic from the most ancient stratum of mathematics that is still of serious interest to modern mathematical research. And to pursue this topic as it developed throughout the millennia is to follow a thread through the history of mathematics that winds through geometry, analysis and special functions, numerical analysis, algebra and number theory. It offers a subject which provides mathematicians with examples of many current mathematical techniques as well as a palpable sense of their historical development." The above passage is taken from the introduction to "Pi : A Source Book" by L. Berggren, J. Borwein and P. Borwein. It is a large collection of papers on pi and will appear with Springer-Verlag sometime in 1997. Much additional material is available in the 1986 Wiley volume

(you can also search for 2201969, but, that is less likely...) For those that dont remember, PI is the big(*) number that begins with three. Thanks to Arthur Bebak (arthur@msm.com) for the idea... * It has been brought to my attention that PI is not really all that "big", per se 4 being given as an example of a number bigger than PI. I could argue that PI is bigger than an infinite number of numbers (-5 for example) but, in truth, that is kinda wimpy and misleading. It turns out that when I was thinking "big" I was thinking of all the space that was used when writing PI down. The stack of papers required to write down PI is much bigger than the stack to write down 1 million. All that said doesn't take away the fact that there was actual confusion regarding the statement of PI being a big number therefore, you should ignore that I called PI the big number that begins with three and instead consider PI to be the really long number that begins with three.

In 1996, NERSC Chief Technologist David H. Bailey , together with Canadian mathematicians Peter Borwein and Simon Plouffe, found a new formula for pi. This formula permits one to calculate the n-th binary or hexadecimal digits of pi, without having to calculate any of the preceding n-1 digits. This formula was discovered by a computer, using Bailey's implementation of Ferguson's PSLQ algorithm. More recently (2001), Bailey and colleague Richard Crandall of Reed College have shown that the existence of this new formula has significant implications for the age-old question: Are the digits of pi random? How many celebrations are there in your math class? Each year on March 14th many classrooms break from their usual routines to observe the festivities of "Pi [ ] Day" because the digits in this date correspond with the first three digits of
Teachers use this date to engage students in activities related to the history and concept of . Students are often familiar with before this day and the projects and activities associated with Pi Day are meant to enrich and deepen the students' understanding of the concept. Activities may include investigations of the value of by approximating the ratio of the circumference to the diameter of a circle. Students may also share their own Pi Projects with their classmates. Some teachers choose to end their Pi Day celebration by eating pie!

(I Kings 7, 23) The same verse can be found in II Chronicles 4, 2. It occurs in a list of specifications for the great temple of Solomon, built around 950 BC and its interest here is that it gives p = 3.
