Description of the Anthropology Program
Anthropology is a social science that seeks to understand and explain human cultural, behavioral, and biological variation through time and space. This gives anthropology a wide reach and has resulted in the formation of three subdisciplines: social anthropology, archaeology, and physical anthropology. Social anthropology concentrates on modern human culture and behavior. Archaeology examines cultural and behavioral variation over time. Physical anthropology studies the biological evidence for human evolution, encompassing everything from the study of modern non-human primates to the earliest stages of mammalian fossil evolution. The objective of the anthropology major is to train the student in all three subdisciplines while allowing the student to concentrate in a specific subdiscipline.

Since live primates are not available for study at Waterloo, students are usually taken on a field trip to the Metro Toronto Zoo to practice observation. Exposure to a large number of species is accomplished by the use of film, including slides and research footage taken by Dr. Anne Zeller.
Physical Anthropology courses include:
  • ANTH 101 Human and Cultural Evolution (also available through correspondence)
  • ANTH 260 Human Evolution (available through correspondence in alternate years)
  • ANTH 261 Primate Behaviour (available through correspondence in alternate years)
  • ANTH 365 Fossil Hominids
  • ANTH 450 Osteology for Archaeologists
  • ANTH 460 Human Adaptation and Evolution
  • ANTH 461 Selected Topics in Primate Behaviour
Recommended units outside the department for students interested in Physical Anthropology include KIN 100, BIO 201, 239, 250, ENV S 195, HLTH 210. Students with an honours degree in anthropology at the University of Waterloo who wish to do graduate work with a focus on physical anthropology will find graduate programs at many Canadian universities

IAHB NEWSLETTER N.29 (1998)
History of Physical Anthropology in Mexico

The aim of this paper is to review the development of physical anthropology in Mexico, both in its institutional aspect as well as in regard to its bibliographic production. Thus, in the first part, based on a periodization that we propose next, we deal with the creation of the main institutions directly linked to the evolution of Mexican anthropology, and the influence that several investigators had on the latter. In a second part, we analyse the advances and trends observed, with the aim of carrying out a critical assessment from the standpoint of the disciplines written production and based both on papers published by Mexican physical anthropologists, in Mexico and abroad, and on papers dealing with the Mexican population published by foreign investigators. It must be stated that, contrary to what happens in other countries, anthropology in Mexico is structurally included within a system whose justification is the conservation and care of the cultural heritage of the nation. This fact has considerable importance, as will be seen throughout this paper. There are four main periods in the history of physical anthropology in Mexico that define the nature of the contributions made in each of them and that may correlate with the academic and political domains in which they arise. In the periodization we propose, chronological limits are set by means of moments that signal in a certain way, as a historical referent, the development of the discipline, and that coincide to a large extent with those used by some other authors that have dealt on this subject.

and by appointment Course Objectives Physical anthropology is the study of human biology within the framework of evolution. In this course we will investigate the biological basis of human life through the study of genetics, inheritance, and the principles of evolution. We will also be concerned with human adaptation and variation. Physical anthropologists also study non-human primates, thus we will become acquainted with the principal living primates and their social behavior, as well as fossil anthropoids and hominoids. We will then critically analyze the data, methods, theories, and debates surrounding the evolution of hominids, with special emphasis on biocultural evolution. By expanding our knowledge of millions of years of evolution, we will develop a deeper appreciation for the nature of humankind. One Hundred Years of Physical Anthropology in China ²©¿ÍÖйú(Blogchina.com) One Hundred Years of Physical Anthropology in China
Modern physical anthropology was introduced to China in the turn of 19th and 20th centuries. The history of Chinese physical anthropology in about 100 years can be devided into four stages roughly, that is , the stage of introduction and acceptance from the turn of 19th and 20th centuries to the end of 1920s, the stage of localization from 1930s to 1949,the stage of tortuosity from 1949 to 1976, and the stage of deep development since the end of 1970s.
1. The Introduction and Acceptance of Physical Anthropology ( from the Turn of 19th and 20th Centuries to the End of 1920s)
In 1920,the Society of Chinese Anthropology and Anatomy was founded in Peking Union Medical College. "Boyi Huibao"(Journal of Comprehensive Medicine ) was published in the same year.In this time, some books on anthropology such as "Shijie Renzhong Wenti"(The Issues on the Races in the World ) (by Huang Xinmin, 1927), "Zhoukoudian Chengnian Yuanren Tougaigu Faxian zhi Jingguo"(The Process of Discovery of the Cap of Adult Ape Man in Zhoukoudian)(by Jia Lanpo, 1929) and others were published.
In Taiwan, when the Dutchmen occupied it in the beginning of 17th century, the Dutch military physicians measured the stature of the aborigine in Taiwan. After 1895,in the period Japanese ruled Taiwan, several Japanese anthropologists carried out researches of physical anthropology in Taiwan. Doi carried out four times of investigations of physical anthropology in Taiwan from 1896 to 1899. He believed that the aborigine of Taiwan migrated from Philippine Islands,Polynesian Islands, and Malay Peninsula. Then, Japanese scholars Cisaki,Ataqi and others published the reports of physical anthropology on the skull, vertebra and tooth of the aborigine in Taiwan. These researches influenced the development of physical anthropology in China.

The goal of this class is to achieve the basic scientific literacy necessary to understand five million years of human evolution, contemporary human variation, and bio-cultural interactions. Topics include the basic concepts of genetics and evolution, the relationship between humans and other primates, the hominid fossil record, and the relationship between biology and culture among human populations. May be taught with a MIC designation. Recommended preparation: WR 121

Prospective graduate students should review the Applying to the Anthropology Graduate Program page. More detail about the physical anthropology program can be found in the booklet Graduate Studies in Physical Anthropology at Arizona State University Resources for the study of physical anthropology at ASU are particularly strong in seven areas in which members of the faculty are actively involved. These areas also are the focus of collaboration with other faculty members both within and outside the Anthropology department. Since these areas provide the most extensive opportunities for student course work, research, and interdisciplinary study, an introduction to each follows, providing information about facilities, research opportunities, and relevant courses. The interests of physical anthropology faculty are below and the faculty can assist student in identifying relevant faculty in other subdisciplines in anthropology and in other academic units (e.g. Zoology, Exercise Science and Physiology, Chemical, Bio and Materials Engineering, Nursing, Psychology, Geology). The student's committee chair will assist in identifying other relevant committee members.

    Physical Anthropology
Physical anthropology extends the study of what it is to be human through time and space to focus on humans from a biological perspective, within an evolutionary framework. In their research, physical anthropologists explore three broad areas: human biology and variability, the anatomy and behaviour of non-human primates, and the fossilized evidence supporting the concept of human evolution. Thus, the field of physical anthropology encompasses several subdisciplines:
    • Paleoanthropology is the study of ancient humans (their anatomy, behaviour, ecology and chronology), particularly as evidenced in the fossil record over the last 4-5 million years.
    • Anthropometry, the measurement of human body parts, focuses on identifying and evaluating physical variability among living and extinct human populations.
    • Genetics, a branch of biology dealing with variability among organisms and the mechanisms for transmission of variable characteristics from parent to offspring, allows physical anthropologists to explain how evolutionary processes work.
    • Primatology is the study of the behaviour and biology of those species most closely related to us, the nonhuman primates (prosimians, monkeys and apes); anthropologists use this information on social and reproductive behaviour, infant care, communication, diet, and locomotion in order to better understand how our own behaviours have evolved.
