CAR Home Legacy Outreach Program CAR Publications CAR Recent Projects ... Home Physical Anthropology What makes us Human? A human is any member of the species Homo sapiens (ãwise manä). We are the only living representative of the family Hominidae or hominids. Hominids are a group of up-right walking primates with relatively large brains, including our ancient ancestors from the genera Homo and Australopithecus. All humans are hominids, but not all hominids are human. All humans are primates, which falls under the order of mammal and includes not only humans, but over 180 species of prosimians like lemurs, tarsiers, and lorises, monkeys (New World and Old World), and apes. Primates are different from all other mammals because of distinctive traits that have evolved over millions of years. What sets primates apart from other mammals, is a highly developed binocular vision, mobile fingers and toes with flat nails instead of claws, a shortened snout (nose and mouth) and larger brains in comparison to body size. Among primates, humans have developed unique traits. Humans have the ability to walk upright on two limbs. This is known as being

A Cultural Construction of the History of Physical Anthropology
Since Physical Anthropology as currently known is less than 200 years old, depiction of its early roots depends on how we characterize the modern day science. Two basic themes underlie most current definitions of Physical Anthropology: Human Evolution and Human Variation
Ancient Roots

PHYSICAL ANTHROPOLOGY The program in physical anthropology focuses on the complex interactions of human biology and culture, particularly the effects of human actions on skeletal anatomy both during life and after death. Graduates in physical anthropology have built careers in academia, in public and private sector organizations concerning health-related public policy, and also law enforcement at the local, state, and federal levels. Faculty and students in physical anthropology are actively engaged in research and teaching concerning a variety of issues in human biology, including:

The laboratories of Physical Anthropology and Archaeology are part of the Department of Anthropology , in the Division of Social Sciences at the University of California, Santa Cruz. The facilities are located on the fourth floor of the Social Sciences 1 Building (shown at right) on the UCSC campus. The laboratories are dedicated to teaching and research in both physical (biological) anthropology and archaeology. Within the labs are spaces for the study of comparative anatomy, osteology, forensic anthropology, zooarchaeology, ceramics, lithics, and Monterey Bay archaeology . The laboratories maintain collections in comparative vertebrate osteology, primate osteology, taphonomic specimens, and regional archaeology. The laboratories are overseen by Professors Alison Galloway Diane Gifford-Gonzalez Judith Habicht-Mauche , and Adrienne Zihlman and managed by Richard Baldwin The Anthropology Laboratory complex includes the Archaeology Archives , a facility for curation of archaeological artifacts from the Monterey Bay. The Archives are managed by Professor Diane Gifford-Gonzalez, and Lab Manager Richard Baldwin. The labs provide a venue for a wide variety of courses including the only laboratory course in human anatomy at UC Santa Cruz. The teaching laboratories' mission is to provide students with hands-on training in the technical skills of physical anthropology and archaeology. These practical skills and experiences serve students well in the job market and in graduate research. Physical anthropology and archaeology courses are enhanced by a wide variety of teaching tools including fossil hominid casts, archaeological type collections and microscopes. Laboratory teaching also integrates multi-media techniques, augmented by audio/visual equipment acquired with a National Science Foundation (NSF) Department of Undergraduate Education grant awarded to the program.

Within the field of physical anthropology there are many different areas of focus. Paleoanthropology studies the evolution of primates
http://anthro.ucsc.edu/physical.shtml
Because these studies take place within an understanding of the context of human behavior and culture, physical anthropology stands as a unique link between the social and biological sciences. At UCSC we focus on skeletal material but within the framework of a functioning organism, each with its own life story written in the bones. Primary research interests include paleoanthropology, primate anatomy and evolutionary theory ( Adrienne Zihlman ) and human skeletal biology and forensic anthropology ( Alison Galloway ). The program is supported by well-equipped anthropology laboratories For info about this page contact Anthro_gradadv@ucsc.edu

Description of the Forensic Program:
The focus of the program in forensic anthropology is to apply skeletal and biological principles and techniques to the identification of skeletal and badly decomposed human remains. While the Forensic Identification Certificate is to prepare undergraduates for introductory level positions in forensic science, similar preparation is offered at the graduate Masters Degree level.
The arrival of Dr. Turhon A. Murad in 1972 at CSU, Chico saw the development of the academic service of forensic anthropology to northern California which was enhanced by the addition of Dr. P. Willey in 1989. Both Drs. Willey and Murad are Fellows of the American Academy of Forensic Sciences and Diplomates of the American Board of Forensic Anthropology. Together Drs. Murad and Willey represent over 70 years of experience in general physical anthropology and human skeletal biology. Additionally, they permit CSU, Chico to be listed as the only university throughout the country which supports two ABFA certified forensic anthropologists. By offering its identification services for over twenty-five years, the Physical Anthropology Human Identification Laboratory (PAHIL) has proven to be valuable throughout northern California and to neighboring states of Nevada and Oregon. The forensic anthropology faculty, staff, and students at CSU, Chico have played an important role in assisting various county sheriffs and coroners, county district attorneys, local police departments, as well as the California Department of Justice and arson investigators throughout the University's service area and beyond.

Word: Word Starts with Ends with Definition Physical anthropology , sometimes called "biological anthropology Anthropology is the study of humankind (see genus Homo). It is holistic in two senses: it is concerned with all humans at all times, and with all dimensions of humanity. Central to anthropology is the concept of culture, and the notion that human nature is culture; that our species has evolved a universal capacity to conceive of the world symbolically, to teach and learn such symbols socially, and to transform the world (and ourselves) based on such symbols.

See also: Race This article is about race as a concept of intraspecies classification. For the many types of competitive sport, see racing. The term race is used in a wide variety of contexts, with related but often distinct meanings. Its use is often controversial, largely because of the political and sociological implications of different definitions, but also because of disagreements over such issues as whether humans can be meaningfully divided into multiple races. The data indicate that there is one human species with variations comprising only aproximatly 1.5% percent of the DNA. The difference between any two groups is on average only 1/10th of a percent. Physical Anthropology at the University of Hawai'i
Physical, or biological, anthropology is one of the four major subfields of anthropology that examines adaptations, variability, and evolution of humans and their relatives, living and extinct. Although a biological science, physical anthropology is also a social science because human biology and other aspects of the discipline are studied in the context of human culture and behavior. Two traditional major foci of interest within physical anthropology are human evolution (including human and primate paleontology and primatology) and human variation (including anthropological genetics, human adaptation, growth and nutrition). Allied fields include medical (nutritional) anthropology and human ecology. Forensic anthropology is a relatively new applied area within physical anthropology. The Department's current areas of expertise allow training in the fields of human evolution, bioarchaeology, human adaptability, medical anthropology, human ecology, and forensic anthropology at the undergraduate (BA) and graduate (MA and PhD) levels. Courses and seminars are offered in the theory of physical anthropology, human evolution, skeletal biology, forensic anthropology, human biology, primate behavior and ecology, and related areas within the Department. Courses which are relevant to physical anthropology are also given in other departments including zoology, geography, and in the Medical School (Genetics, Physiology, Anatomy) and School of Public Health.

Explore Anthropology Bio-Physical Anthropology What is Bio-Physical Anthropology? But human history begins in a different place further back in time. It starts at least 4 million years ago, when a population of apelike creatures from eastern Africa turned onto a unique evolutionary road. Thus, the anthropologist's comparative perspective must be expanded to include more than prehistoric human societies, for behavior has primate roots as well. To fully understand humankind we must learn more about its place in the natural habitat of living things. Biological (or physical) anthropology looks at Homo sapiens as a genus and species, tracing their biological origins, evolutionary development, and genetic diversity. Biological anthropologists study the biocultural prehistory of Homo to understand human nature and, ultimately, the evolution of the brain and nervous system itself.
