The origin of human beings has been a subject of fascination for millennia, and appears prominently in many systems of mythological and religious belief. But the systematic scientific study of human origins is comparatively recent. As studies in anatomy progressed in the seventeenth and eighteenth centuries, and as scientists began organizing species into genera and speculating on evolution , some turned their attention to humanity's relationship with other animals, especially the primates. The first systematic investigation of the anatomical differences between apes and humans came in 1699, when Edward Tyson, the most important founder of primatoogy, dissected both human beings and chimpanzees and pointed out their points of divergence in Orang-Outang, sive Homo sylvestris: or the anatomy of a pygmy compared to that of a monkey, an ape, and a man, to which is added a philological essay concerning the pygmies, the cynocephali, the satyrs, and sphinges of the ancients The work of describing, classifying, and distinguishing human beings and other primates was carried on in the eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries by

The diagnosis of various pathologies is a major tool for both archaeology and medicine. This set illustrates disease phenomena which are reproducible across geographic and even species lines. The antiquity of one disease rheumatoid arthritis varies geographically, possible evidence for its origin as vector-transmitted and for speculation about human behavior. By Bruce M. Rothschild.

Syphilis, Yaws, and Bejel occur in more than 40 ancient populations. Yaws and Bejel can be traced back more than 6,000 years in the New World, possibly migrating with early Asian populations. Consistently represented for thousands of years, replacement of Yaws by syphilis is first documented 1800 years ago in the United States. The osseous record suggests possible infection of Columbus' crew. Thus, syphilis appears to be a New World disease, derived from Old World Yaws, and subsequently transmitted back to the Old World.

The discipline of anthropology studies humankind in all the cultures of the world, both past and present. This study includes humankind's physical development and the wide diversity of lifestyles people have created. The Anthropology major is a liberal arts degree with a broad base of information and understanding about human behavior. The cross-cultural approach of Anthropology provides a framework for understanding the many sub-cultural differences we meet every day. The Anthropology major can open many doors of opportunity and provide valuable training to successfully deal with the fluid and changing of the future. The Anthropology Department provides training in four subdisciplines: cultural anthropology, archaeology, physical anthropology and anthropological linguistics. Using ethnographic, ethnological and ethnohistorical tools, and information supplied by the four subdisciplines, the anthropologist studies cultures and the processes of human development comparatively.
There are four major concentrations available: Anthropology Archaeology Anthropology/Biology Anthropology/Education A minor in Anthropology is also available.

n 1912, Charles Dawson found skull fragments in association with the fossilized remains of large mammals such as mastodons in a site on Piltdown Common, England. The remains became known as Piltdown Man. In 1953, the Piltdown skull was declared a hoax. When the bones were subjected to fluorine analysis, they found that the cranium material contained less fluorine than did the bones of other extinct animals found with it, and that the mandible was that of a modern orangutan. The culprit who had masterminded the hoax had filed down the canine teeth, and had stained the bones to make them appear to be of the same age as known prehistoric animals. These diverse fragments were then secretly placed in the sites. Who perpetrated this dastardly deed? Over the years several persons have been named including Arthur Conan Doyle, the creator of Sherlock Holmes, who lived near Piltdown Common and was a known antievolutionist.

DEPARTMENT OF ANTHROPOLOGY
ABOUT UVM ANTHROPOLOGY ANTHROPOLOGY COURSE INFORMATION
The department offers a broad range of courses reflecting the breadth of the discipline as well as the diversity of our faculty's experiences and interests. Our program begins with four basic courses designed to introduce anthropology's four major subfields - Human Cultures, Prehistoric Archaeology, Physical Anthropology and Linguistic Anthropology. To aid students in developing familiarity with specific geographical regions and representative human groups, we offer a wide variety of "people" courses such as North American Indians, Indians of the Northeast, Native Peoples of Canada, Cultures of South America, Cultures of Africa, and South Pacific Cultures. We also offer a number of topical courses that focus on special themes such as Women, Society and Culture; Crisis Cults and Movements; Urban Anthropology; Third World Development; Race and Ethnicity; Sociolinguistics; Aging in Cross-Cultural Perspective; Historical Archaeology; Anthropological Theory; Archaeological Theory; Social Organization; Museum Anthropology; and Culture Change. Students can gain practical field experience in courses such as Field Work in Archaeology, Methods of Ethnographic Field Work, Microethnography and the student-initiated Senior Seminar. The UVM catalogue contains more specific information on all these offerings. Internships or field work practicums such as the one in the Diabetes Prevention Program in the Kahnawake Tribal Territory outside of Montreal, Quebec, are also available on a course or semester basis.

40. Anthropology - Introduction
Major and minor programs with a concentration in physical anthropology, archaeology or social anthropology. Features course syllabi, faculty profiles and department events. Located in Wellesley.
http://www.wellesley.edu/Anthropology/intro.html
Department of Anthropology Welcome to the Wellesley College Anthropology Department! Although we are a small department, all of the conventional fields of anthropology are covered by the faculty. You may concentrate in physical anthropology archaeology , or social anthropology Our courses cover Africa, Latin America, and Asia, as well as the culture of the United States. Many of them explore contemporary issues in the Third World and the relationship between the United States and the Third World. We offer a broad range of courses in the cross-cultural study of family, gender, law, economics, and technology. In various ways, our courses cover the relationship between anthropology and history. Furthermore, the Department has an ongoing cooperative relationship with MIT and Brandeis University. You may complement our course selection with courses from either institution. If you are interested in archaeology, you might, after some initial work, wish to participate in the Boston-wide Center for Materials Research in Archaeology and Ethnology, which will give you practical experience concerning technological processes and their development. There are opportunities to participate in archaeological field projects both here and abroad. For anthropology majors, there are also field trips and urban internships. Department Office:
